  1. Hey mate,

good luck for Sunday, we're heading out for a marlin run tomorrow. Log on with the coastal patrol channel 70 on 27mgz or 16 on VHF. those channels will also give weather updates. Don't foregt to log off when you get back in.

    Goodcluck and tight lines

  2. You also mention that you have outriggers. With a set up like that you will be able run 5 outfits. short corner, long corner, sort and long rigger and a shotgun. You will find lots of tips if you google lure spreads etc, also try googling some of the well know brands like pakula and that will point you in the right direction.

    good luck.

  3. Hi Guys,

I don't use braid when marlin fishing. I run 50W tiagras loaded with 24kg and three penn (30s and 50's) with 15 kg, all mono, has more stretch. It does mean that you need to use the boat to keep that line tight all the time. I then run a double, tied with a simple plait knot about 2-3 inches long, plait is only 3-4 feet long. then use a wind-on leader 100 -150lb for the 15's and 250lb for the 24's. Gives greater control at the boat and also will give you a better chance if you manage to hook a larger fish. I then use sampo's tied with a uni knot. You can crimp the sampo's if you like.

    Good luck and tight lines

  4. Bisso is right, I had the same problem in a fibreglass boat I had years ago. The screws that hold the bung unit in place were the problem. As bisso says pull out the whol bung unti clean it up and appkly a generous layer of sikaflex before screwing back together. you amy also need to increase the gague of screws you are using. If this doesnt solve your problem, put some water in the hull with food colouring, yellow is less obvious than pink and look for yellow stains.

  5. Hey mate,

Where abouts in Port Stephens are you.

If i were you i would fish onshore aswell near Jimmy's Beach for flatties, bream and whiting.

Myall river for bream, whiting, flathead, tailor and jewfish too name a few. If you are on the south side then Nelson Bay break wall is great for jewies and bream.

Offshore Broughton Island is the go. If you can get yourself a labeled map then try a few of these spots.

Cod Rock: Mulloway and Kingfish on fresh or live bait.

Coal Shaft Bay: usually a calm water bay with Flathead, Whiting, Snapper and a few kingfish around.

North Rock: Snapper and Kingfish with a few bream and drummer present at times around the washes.

Other offshore reefs from Port Stephens that are good are:

    Outer Boulders: Kingfish and Snapper.

Tommy's: Mixed Reef fish eg: Snapper, teraglin, silver trevally and Morwong.

The Sisters: Snapper, Bream, Tailor and Tarwhine near broughton.

Once you tell me where you are based i can give u a heep more info. especially onshore.

    Thanks Mate ,

We are staying in Anna Bay. Appreciate your help.

  6. Hi Raiders,

Heading up to Port Stephens in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. Have never fished there before. looking for suggestions on where to go. Will be taking my Barcrucher 560 so will have access to offshore fishing. Will have some non-fishos' with me so looking to target Kings, snapper, flathead etc.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

  7. With school holidays nearly over I offered to take my two 10 year old twin nephews for a bream bash and crabbing session in the hawkesbury. The boys arrive promptly at 6.30 with mum and dad in tow. Loaded them into the cruiiser and up to Mooney Monney we headed. Got there to find a howling wind with whitecaps in the river. None the less we launched and pushed my Barcrusher up onto the plane and headed towards Bar point. We deployed ten witches hats on the way in a couple of locations. We headed down to the vines for a fish while the crab baits soaked. Well an hour later we had caught one catfish. So we pulled up and went to check out dilly nets. a bit disappointing there as well, one crab and one dilly with a massive hole in it and the bait gone. I suspect a muddy.

Left half a dozen hats in the spot where we caught the first crab and then put out 4 mre in a couple of other locations. Anchored up at Bar point and the boys had a ball pulling in undersized beam. We did manage a keeper silver bream and a flounder. The boys got one each so they were stoked. By now it was 12.00 and we headed off the check the crab nets again. Nothing at two locations and then at the same location where we caught our first crab we managed another. Unfortunately some bugger decided to steal two of our nets, we assume they had crabs in them and off they went. We can't understand why people have no respect for others these days. Most fishos I've encountered over the years have been pretty good blokes. What motivates someone to pull up someone else's crab trap and steal it along with the catch. This is the second time this has happed on our previous trip we lost two nets as well.

Anyway whilst the boys had a ball, I was a bit disappointed for them as they were having great time pulling up the crab pots. The two nets that went missing would have certainly made their day.

I think I will stop using floats that can be seen from a distance from now on and just use a bit of stick that floats.

We were hoping to do better on the crabs. If anyone has had success latel;y and is willing to share some tips on bait and locations, and depths that would be most appreciated.

    Cheers

  8. Hi Raiders,

I'm heading up to Harrington early in January and have never been there before. Can anyone help me with spots to fish up there. Taking my Barcrusher 560, so we have access to fish mostly anywhere. Interested in flathead, reds, mowies, etc etc and also interested in dollies and trolling for Marlin, not sure what other pelagics to expect at that time of year.

    Cheers

  9. Gday Raiders

Came back from my birthday trip to Fiji just over a week ago. Off the bat Fiji is an absolutely AWESOME place. The locals are great, the food is spectacular the swimming, sights and scenery is all unreal but most importantly the fishing is a 10 out of 10.

This year for my 30th bday present the :wife: surprised me with a 10 night trip to Fiji. She had organized 5 nights on Denarau resort island followed by a 2 night Yasawa Islands cruise with 3 nights back on Denarau to finish it off. While the trip was full of highlights the main highlight for me was catching an 85kg Yellowfin Tuna!

The Fijians seem to be spolied for choice over there - GTs, Mahi Mahi, marlin, sails, tuna the list goes on and on. I went on 2 charters while we were there, the 1st charter was rather disappointing. The skipper seemed to be full of talk but didnt really seem to know too much. It was a 4 hour charter and I did manage to land 1 GT to about 6kgs but the way the charter was organized showed this bloke up to be a bit of a cowboy.

Luckily for me I was put on to another charter operator thanks to a very friendly cab driver. It was day 8 and was determined to catch a quality fish before leaving Fiji. I met up with John and his son Nick who were taking me out on a 4 hour charter aboard Johns awesome 32ft centre console Lady Lily. As we pulled out of the 4kn zone John ran through the safety drill then said to me - "will drive for about 30 minutes and jump into the 2nd current line and get you into some fish". This was what I wanted to hear. Then he said theres a harness up the front put it on because you'll need it. I thought to myself "this blokes a cocky bugger".

As we got closer to our destination Nick started getting the spread ready. There was no shortage of quality game gear aboard. As we rounded one of the islands and started our troll towards Suva there were masses of birds working various patches all over the place. John made our way to the biggest of the lot and straight away put us onto a triple hook up of yellowfin. I began playing the first fin while Nick set the hooks on the other 2. The first fin came in at about 6kgs but unfortunately 1 of the other 2 was rather large and it ran straight across the other lines tangling and cutting the 2 fin free. After re rigging for 20 minutes the 5 lines went back out and away we went for pass number 2 which had us on a double hook up with another fin of around 6-8kgs. This went on for about 2.5 hours with run after run, plenty of solid fish lost and about 7 fin landed in total.

The fin went seemed to go a bit quiet and the masses of birds became less and less. All fish landed were between 6-9kgs and I was stoked because we were pulling in constant fish. Then all of a sudden the the rapala on the Penn International goes off on a screaming run. Nick lifts the rod out of the holder and sets the hooks and im in. Immediately I could feel that this fish was a lot bigger than the others. A number of times througout the fight all I could do was stand there and hold on. The battle went on for 32 minutes. I was stoked when I finally had it beat although there were a few close calls with the rails of the boat. When I finally managed to bring it to the surface it was an amazing sight seeing 85kg of yellowfin come up out of the depths like a barrel! Nick was ready with the gaff and managed to get it on the 3rd attempt. John tied the tail and I chucked the 2nd gaff in. When we tried to lift it in I ended up straigtening the gaff. Once we finally got it into the boat I was STUFFED! I had to have a sit down to get my breath back. My left arm was burning, my back hurting but I didnt care because id just pulled this beast in! The fin ended up being a record for Johns boat so needless to say he was very excited as well.

On the way back to the wharf John pulled into the beach out side our resort so that my wife could run down and have a look at the fish. She was amazed and couldnt believe the size of it. Once we got back to the wharf people gathered around for pictures etc. I gave 4 of the smaller fin to my cabbie and left the big fin for John, Nick and there family.

The trip as a whole was a truly memorable experience and catching this big boy just capped it off. I cant wait to go back to Fiji next year and team up with John and Nick again.

Great time, more photos to come later.

    Well done Dan awesome fish....

  10. G'Day raiders,

We got out there today. Around the heads were a little sloppy but persisted. Was a little calmer as we headed north.

At North Head, we found some birds working and as I tied on the 10gm lure, about 5 boats also saw them. A couple of casts and nothing and with the seas like a washing machine pushed on.

Up at Long Reef we fished in about 20m drifting. The drift was east to west. Probably should have anchored but we managed to find a couple of fish.

Finished up with 5 snapper ranging from 35-45cm.

Usual rubbish sweep and wrasse stealing baits.

Allday, you're right about the odd spew, some of us were a little green around the gills.

Butch, there was one boat which managed a big king, I think they were trolling though. Not sure if they were raiders or not.

Wasn't fantastic seas but it's always good to get out for a fish.

Well done Dave..... always great to get on the water, and getting a good feed was a bonus.... Baits or SPs?

  11. G'Day all,

    Thanks for the tips.

Going to risk it and see what happens when we get to north head.

Jim, I'll be launching at Rose Bay.

Boat is a 625 Cruisecraft Explorer.

Hopefully have something worth reporting tomorrow night.

    Dave.
