i can tell you guys from 20 years experiance off rock fishing there no way i would wear a life jacket
wearing a life jacket means you can't dive under breaking waves and swimming is also impaired
golden rule off the stones is unless your a strong swimmer in surf conditions do'nt go rock fishing
most people lose the lives trying to clamber back up onto the rockes after getting washed in and get smashed
gary
I kind of thought there would be a disadvantage to it,cheers for the input mate,i guess it could be used for those that are not strong swimmers at all perhaps....on the fishing and acquaculture site its on the recommendation list to wear one,it does not directly say to who exactly, but id suppose there talking about all rock fisherman in general for there own safety.

its a no brainer honestly, wear a life jacket, and live to fight another fishing day
-
Just curious here and this may be abit funny to some and may save a life in the process,if people want to risk there lives fishing off rocks that are known to be hazardous for fishing, why cant they wear a life jacket?
most these lives that have been lost, what was the cause of death, drowning perhaps?
It may seem funny to some, but i think the idea of wearing a life jacket at a dangerous rock fishing spot, could ideally one day save another life, well thats my 2cents.

Unlucky with the fish mate, but that looks like a great spot for fishing, where abouts in avoca is that mate.

Hey all looking at purchasing a beach rod now that i have my general purpose rod,im looking at spending roughly around $200-$250 on a 12 footer perhaps,or is that abit to much.
Is there anything i need to know before buying one, also can anyone recommend a rod/reel combination from one of the sites sponsors, cheers

Hi fadz
North and South head both have a few rock spots that can fish very well. Access ranges from a rock scamble to full on rockclimbing, ladders and ropes. The platforms them sleves vary from reasonably safe (Old Mans Hat) to down right suicidal.
I suggest you team up with someone who knows the area well, the death toll of rock fishers from those two headlands would be the highest in Oz over the years for shear numbers.
David
hey dave, thanks for the information, obviously the last thing i want to do is risk my life or my cousins over fish, where would be a safer place to go with easier access and decent fish nearest to either north or south heads, cheers mate

Old Mans Hat South head along the sandstone fence off the drive (south head drive), gates are closed at night also but you can get pelagics, pigs, blackfish, seen a monster blue groper hanging around there, have caught my PB squid from there as a bycatch on live yakkas also, just be carefull on southerly swells particularly on high tide
Cheers for that mate...will give it a try this weekend hopefully, anyone with any other suggestions, cheers.
