  5. Gave myself a late start today due to the big southerly they had forecast. Woke up to find it absolutely still. Checked all the websites and they were all saying light winds.

It was raining but that didn't bother me so i hit the water about 10am. Quickly got some Yakkas and then went to try for some slimies at a spot which had been suggested to me. No slimies but i had an amazing encounter with a BIG King. I was standing looking out the back of the boat when i thought i saw something in the burley trail. At first i thought it was a small shark... then it came and starting bumping my burley pot. WTF!! It was a HUGE King well over a metre. It was so close i could have leant over and grabbed it by the tail. I quickly threw out a yakka but it wasn;t interested and with a flick of his tail it was gone.

By this stage the wind was howling and i was soaked through. B@gger this i thought to myself - time to go in, but for some reason i thought i would have a quick downrig at a spot on the way back. Getting set up was a mission in the strong wind and chop, but i eventually got my bait down and got the boat set. First pass and - big hit and screaming drag! Niiicccce. After a good fight i boated the fish below which went 84cm. Despite the wind i thought i'd have another go - i could see some solid fish on the sounder so i picked the biggest bait i had and put it down. Exactly the same spot - same result, although i could tell this was a better fish. I got a few winds on and then got the bomb up but the wind was blowing me onto a shallower section and i could feel my line rubbing. After a couple of tense moments i got him off the bottom and then slogged it out mid water. After a very good fight i got the fish in the boat. At first i thought i had finally broken my harbour 1 metre duck... but he went 91cm. Still a great fish and i must have been feeling festive as i put him back in!! So hoepfully the fish gods smile on me and i get some good karma for that one.

A did a couple more passes for 2 rats and then after copping a wave over the bow/windscreen i figured discretion is the better half of valour and headed for calmer waters. I tried a couple of markers on the way home for one more rat.

All in all a great session - even if the weather was @hite!

Good luck if you're heading out at the weekend.

  6. hey all,

I'm heading up to whale beach tommorow and i'm just wondering about any good lb spots? I'm bringing up just a little flick stick with 12lb mono. Any good spots for flatties, bream, whiting fish like that would be great. Totally understand if you want to keep your hard earned spots a secret. Any helped would be great.

    Thanks TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :1fishing1::1fishing1:

  7. Hi Tom,

It depends entirely what you're looking to catch. I've fish Balmoral once or twice a week and have seen the fishing change dramatically there over the last 4-6 weeks. There are a lot of pickers (tiny bream, snapper, and sweep) there at the moment and I've seen no keeper bream or trevally come out of there for a while now, mostly because evey bait gets picked to pieces in seconds so never makes it through to the decent fish. The summer bream schools don't seem to have moved in from the open sea yet either.

There's a lot of baitfish around balmoral and when the conditions are right (read calm, clear water) the kings have started to show up. The first one I know of that was caught was just over a week ago, and there were a few there yesterday. That said I have only seen them there early - first light until an hour or two after sunrise - after that don't bother. Salmon and tailor have turned up too but not consistently. There's so much baitfish in the harbour that it seems to be luck of the draw whether they turn up at any given spot at any given time.

If you're looking for flatty's, bream, and whiting then I would avoid the wharves (where the pickers seem to have congregated at the moment) and look for the shallow beaches or sand flats that are numerous around MH, around a high tide. Fisher bay, sandy bay, shell cove, balmoral beach (if the weather is crap so no swimmers), cobblers beach, sirius cove, shell cove, would all be on my list for them. If you're after the pelagics then Balmoral wharf (on it's day), spit bridge (rocks on the north east towards fisher bay), middle head, the platforms between middle head and clifton gardens, the rocks on the south side of clifton gardens, cremorne point, and my fav spot at the moment, bradleys head. The latter being good on early morning run-in/high when the schools of tailor and salmon can usually be spotted right across the harbour, occasionally coming in close enough to get a lure to. You might have to be prepared to drive around and see what's firing on the day.

Last point is that Clifton gardens has a bit of everything - deep water close, the wharf providing protection for baitfish, sandy and weedy beach etc, and is a great LB spot - possibly the best LB spot in MH - for all species. So it will be worth a go when it re-opens later this month but be prepared to fight for a spot!

    Paul

Thanks mate i'll have to try them out! Also just wondering about bradleys head. Can you get the flatties, bream and whiting there as well as pelagics? Thanks mate I'll see you at those SPOTS!

  8. hey fishos,

I was down at berry Island yesterday arvo but there was no fish there! Someone said that it had flatties, whiting and BREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ranting2: Owell just wondering about balmoral wharf? I've heared from recent reports like 09/12/09 that the kings have been coming in to shallow water and busting up the yacks! any lb spots on the midlle harbour side of the harbpur bridge would be awseome!

    Thanks TOM!!!

  9. Congrats on your 1st placcy fish.

It will be the start of a never ending addiction now.

Try a few sessions without taking any bait & just fishing plastics. The results will come & you'll be hooked for life! :biggrin2:

    Well done.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

Great mate. I love soft plastics! I've hooked lot's of lizards!!! Just a question where were you fishing. General area is fine! Thanks

    TOM!!!

  10. i don't know about berry island but i have been fishing around balmain east and picking up plenty of lizards and tailor and baby snapper. just using plastics( but not for the tailor) :1fishing1:

thanks mate i'll try around there! :1fishing1:

  11. Hey raidders,

as any one whos read my recent reports would know I am saving up for a tinnie. While I am waiting I need to fish LB. Does anyone know what berry Island is like at the moment. I've heard that there a flatties and tailor? Thanks

    TOM!!!!!!!!!!!! :1fishing1::1fishing1:

  12. Thanks mate.

I wish i was onto something with the jewie it certainly adds a whole new dimension to trolling for tailor! I'm feeling pretty privileged for it to have happened.

    Doug.

Great catch mate! Just wondering were you near the Iron Cove bridge when you saw the birds? Anyways great catch and what a day!!!!!!!!! :1fishing1::biggrin2:

  13. Yeah mate, it was a pretty good 2 hours. It was a pitty we didn't come any earlier. Yeah landing the toothy was a bit of an effort especially on light tackle. Fortunately I brought a half decent reel along. Yeah the shark was lip hooked. Yeah, we caught a snapper aswell but threw it back. The snapper was a tiny bit over 30cm but threw it back. Apart from tailor, we caught a few yakka's which we threw out for live bait.

Yeah mate, we usually do hit the decent sized tailor around that time aswell, for some reason they just kept hitting our bait. Must have been the burley that made them go crazy. I'll try bleeding them out as you mentioned.

HAHAHA my wife says I can't go fishing all the time because she hates it, hence why i tell her to stay at her parents house or spend time with her mates.

Yeah, between us all, we've never caught a shark or know anything about preparing it and no one would've volunteered to clean it either. :1prop:

Awseome job mate. Keep those fishies comin! Rock On TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Hey everyone

went out fishing yesterday at Port Hacking and the pillies were on!! Over at darky they were boiling up like crazy :yahoo::yahoo::thumbup: . You could see the birds striling at them from the other side of the bay! We had a go with a few splices and no hook up's  Not much else, the Hacking has been pretty quiet lately.

    TOM!!!!!!!!!!!! :1fishing1:

  15. Well done nice couple of seshs and love them Kingys

Great day fishing guys :biggrin2: Hopen theres more like those ones to come! I've seen them boiling up on the surface too but no lures are working for me  Haven't been out for a while but! :tease::tease: Great pictures TOM!!!!!! :1fishing1:

  16. Hello fellow Fishraiders

Does anyone know wher i can hook up my first squid anywhere around the Central Coast,

some people say the Haven is ok but ive never heard of anyone catching squid there

    Thanks in Advance

    Bunney10

    Hi Bunney10

If your interested in the squid you have to try Pittwater. There are heaps of great spots and if you have a boat all the better. If your landbased try Avoca Beach or Hardy's Bay wharf and drifts along the weed there at HIGH TIDE!!!!(to minimise snags  )

    Keep fishing TOM!!!!! :thumbup::1fishing1::yahoo:

  18. give blues point a go aswell mate ive caught lanbased kings from this spot, and seen a fair few school jewfish taken here too. good luck, catch some squid strip it up send it out and wait for the reel to scream at you for help :1prop:

    Thanks I can't wait TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

peirs 1&2 in the harbour right nxt to the bridge.can get pretty crowded but fishes pretty good.kings, jew, bream ,trevs, whiting, jackets, blackies, yakkas, slimies & alot of other speicies too.iv fished there as a kid catching the train to circular quay & walked the further 5-10mins to the peirs 15yrs ago.back then we'd get a packet of prawns & mainly catch bream & whiting & yakkas.these days wen i get the train there,i still target the bream & whiting, but also the kings, trevally & jew.never caught jew there myself but have witnessed 10kg+ fish landed there.this time of year onwards to feb, march, the kings should be there.mostly rats but some hoodlums cruise by looking for a feed too.you can get them casting out into the main harbour, but dont forget to drop baits down right at your feet.alot of good fish are caught[& lost]dropping baits along side the pylons & under there peir itself.the baitfish like yakkas & other smaller bait hang under the peir for cover & the predators know it.iv hooked most of my kings there dropping squid strips straight down either lightly weighted or unweighted.onced hooked up,hang on & have some fun.hav to admit iv been busted off with my fare share of kings there over the years.also nice size trevs too.

so get out there & giv the spots a go & have some fun champ.let us knw how you go.

hope this helps you & i might see you at the peirs 1 day. :1fishing1:

    cheers johnny.

Your awseome thanks so much :biggrin2: Can't wait to get up there. I've seen the kings working all over that spot but have never tryed it myself!

    TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

  19. Hey all,

I,ve been trying to get money to buy my own little tinnie but I probably won't have it untill christmas  so I have been fishing off the rocks, beaches and points when we don't have my dads boat in. I live in the nth sydney area and are just wondering about the Balls Head area? I,ve seen the kingies going off and I know that a big fat juicy 1m is just waiting for me too hook it :tease: My dad and my four brothers have not had the chance to go out in our boat and chase them :mad3: so I was wondering if anyone knew any realiable fish spots( Tailor, Kings, Bream-treavally any really  ) that I can have accsess to by land or boat but prefferably land. Completely understand if you don't won't to share your treausres but information would be awseome :yahoo::thumbup:

  21. Hi Raiders, my phones buzzin' pick up and its Pete on the line, Ray fish at Avoca now,

so I grab some gear and shoot around the rocks. I arrive to see that Pete had caught

2 nice Morwong, I've rarely seen these caught off the rocks, but there they were 2

nice ones. I was rigging up when Pete hooks into another nice fish, this time a Tarwine.

We both have lines set on the bottom now and the action had settled a bit, when in the

distance I spot a big boil 200 meters atleast, it slowly makes its way towards us so we

prepare the spin gear and sure enough its a huge school of salmon.

We cast , retrieve and bang we both hook up, Pete was using his flathead plastic gear,

interesting choice but after dancing around the rocks for 10 mins he finally got the beast

in by this time he's a good 100meters from where he cast, by this I had mine in and returned

and also scored a nice trevally, the school past by and that was it.

We decide to try for some pigs and maybe a groper, I dig around some crevaces and grab

a couple of red crabs, change over the spinner for some 40lb line and a 6/0 hook and I

hoik out a whole crab, I know this was gonna be interesting and sure enough I feel 2 big

thuds and then the brutal pressure of a thumping big groper, all over in 5 seconds, I was

glad that Pete saw it , a very brief demo of the power of these brutes, meanwhile Pete is playing

with some bread baits and he gets his very first drummer, it was only a baby but still a first

and Pete was stoked, a quick pic and he was sent back.

We packed up from the high rock and had a cast down near the slide, I felt a few taps on

my pilchard tail and then a small run, I set the hook and haul in a shovel nose, another pic and

    he was sent back.

So that was the arvo, we caught a few different fish today, Pete ended up with a nice bag and it

was a nice way to spend the arvo...
