  1. Nice Jew,

so the slimeys do work... i may try again next time. (didn't work for me when i tried)

You mentioned that this is the first jewie that you decided to keep for eating, (i assume by this you have caught them before)

but i'm curious, what made you change your mind and want to eat it this time?

  2. HI guys, i need a little bit of urgent advice.

after much anticipation and many failed attempt, me and a few mates finially pulled together a fishing trip to the hawkesbury. leaving tonight at 6. coming back to syd tomorow morning.

we will be launching from brooklyn. and will be fishing mainly around this area, bridges, holes, dropoffs... all night for the mighty jew.

first thing will be be looking for is yakkas. we won't try for squid as none of us are skilled enough in the art of egi...

If any one can, please shed some light on a spot or two where we may be able to find a yellowtail or slimey mak... what ever will be easier..

any help will be greaty appreciated.

    cheers,

    Leo

  3. My thoughts, fill it with braid.....if it is a fish of a life-time you dont't want to be thinking "I'm now at the back fill which is only x kg" . For the investment, always go with the best when it comes to line is my opinion. You don't get 2 chances at that best fish.

Great advice there twinfisher! some fish out there can test your line to its very last gram of holding strength.. and Thats the fish worth well over $$$$!!! just doesn't make any sense compromising quality when you already have the line anyway... might as well use it.

as for backing, i found a little bit of duct tape on the aluminum barrel, then braid straight on top wont slip, but do use some old braid as backing to achieve a level finish with the lip of your spool.

knots, i agree with the double uni.

  4. Just finished reading your post. Then had a browse over some of the comments that suggested a long story.?? I started thinking "what are these people talking about." .. Then a scrolled back up the page.... I had no idea i just read THAT much!!! It was such an entertaining read i just didnt notice any length.

  5. That makes sense. I've always that it was a rule to sick the hook in the upper body?? Don't know why, cuz there's no rules in fishing. Hehe, xcept bag and size limits and so forth.... But yea, it'll be like a pop up bait, would look Very natural.

  6. Do they put up much of a fight?

i've only caught small ones last year. but they go alright, fight a bit weird thou. very interesting.. i can't wait to go and try for some bigger ones!!!

  7. GREAT POST & THREAD!

to add detail are the 'stationary' methods are all suitable for land-based mulloway in both estuary, rocks and beach?

or is one method better for particular scenarios?

top right of the stationary, the one with the double half hitch at the tail... i like this one especially for land based as it allows for a hard long cast, without having to bury the hook to deep, thus keeping the livie alive while getting it our far.

  8. Hi raiders,

just trying to contribute some my personal XP when it comes to rigging up yakkas.

this is what i use most often. ATTENTION: the green X is where the hook penetrates the fish.

Would love some input from you guys on how your rigs look like, and what rigs you find works best. cheers.

  9. Them some large hair tail. I was trying to tee up a hairtail session this weekend but plans got canceled. My question is how long do you think the hairies will stick around for? I don't think I'll be going till mid June.. Cheers

  10. Penn spin fisher, old school ones (while they where still made in USA) <--- the best reel for teaching newbies how to fish. why?? cuz they unbreakable!

i use my 2000 td sol, with kings, jews... no probs. does better than my other 4000 reel,.. yes, the 4000 would have no probs handling a bigger fish,, but i think cuz i have such a heavy setup on that combo, it gets touched less, and therefore my 2000 always ends up doing all the work

btw, i only use my 8000 spin fisher for beach fishing now.. sand.. no probs !!

  11. very good idea, that fish looks like it would put up a good fight! only one problem,

if only i knew HOW to get em...

i was at parra river one day with some light gear and bread. the rig consisted of about 3 meters of 10lb fluro leader uni-knotted to my main line.. then just a size 2 hook with bread compacted so to hide the whole hook. walking around i spotted 2 massive carp swimming along casually. woah.. i stood still and casted about a couple meters in front of them.. one of the carp actually swam towards my bait to check it out... nope. they disappeared! numerous attempts casting blindly into every fishy spot for 2 hours. resulted in nothing. it was middle of day.

  12. Hello raiders,

So Im Thinking about buying a ultra light surf set up for lure fishing off the Beach.

Im thinking of throwing into the surf some metal lures, raiders in the 10 or 20 sizes,to chase taylor salmon etc.... and also soft plastics to bounce off the bottom for the old bream flathead etc.... I have never tried soft plastics off the beach bouncing off the bottom but apparently is a hit and miss situation.

I was planning to take my sp rod for esuary's and bay's down to the beach to give the sp a go and see what i would want in the ultra light surf outfit comparing it to my sp outfit. atm the sp esuary outfit is a 7 foot rod, consisting of a size 2000 reel suited up with 1 Lb fireline and 4 Lb leader. (I have a feeling This line wont stand up too long in the surf before it gets busted up by something with teeth:S). I was just thinking about keeping the 7 ft rood (rated at 2-4kg) and fitting it with a new reel with a stronnger line (About 6lb fireline 10 lb fluro leader). But ill see how i go when i test it out on the surf.

Have you guys have any suggestions? Longer rod in the 10-12 foot range? im not sure but i just wanted an idea from other fisherman about the set up i was thinking of buying. Oh and my budget has got to be below $200.

I love the feel of a big fish on light gear.

    Thank guys!

1lb micro ice.. nice. thou how do you even tie a knot with that line??

anyway, you don't actually need a long rod to get a far cast. especially if your using very light gear.

but if you want a high performing graphite rod+reel combo that will get you far casts (essential for surf fishing) , and still be light enough to feel every tail slap. then you have to increase your budget first...

i'd go a long lox rod, don't worry about line rating... just get the longest one you feel comfy with.., couple with a c14 or td sol. 2500.. spooled with 10lb thin as diameter braid.

my 2 and a half cents..
