hey raiders,

I headed out yesterday morning to fish one of my regular haunts in the harbour, no bait but the plan was to get a few squid and if they weren't around, just flick a few lures and see what's about. luckily there was a few around and in a short time I had 5 lollipop arrow squid. At sunrise sent a squid out and then it was time to wait.. first squid got its head picked off which was annoying but whilst I was retrieving it I saw a big green torpedo with a big yellowtail turn away right at my feet, quickly pinned another live squid and casted out, keeping the reel in free spool, 20 seconds later the line started to peel off, gave it a few metres and tightened up. straight away I knew this wasn't your average 60-80cm king as it took off like a missile and didn't look like stopping but eventually it slowed down and I started to gain on it, for the next five or so minutes it would come in abit closer, then rip me back out deep, eventually it started to give in and came in close, but as usual with kingfish they never give up and it had a few really close calls in trying to get me around a pylon but managed to steer it clear each time, finally managed to get it on the surface and since I was solo with no net, I had to walk it around to where I was able to reach down and grab it. To say I was stoked was an understatement, on the brag mat it was just budging 95cm and easily 7-8kg,

Probably one of my most memorable catches land based especially on 20lb leader and with all the structure around me. Took me a while to compose myself after that but eventually got myself back fishing. Not long after I hooked a decent trevally on my lighter outfit on a squid strip which gave me a huge struggle around the pylons but eventually landed it, going just under 55cm. Sent it back as I already had the king.

About 5 minutes after that another squid got slammed and I was hooked up to another king, which was fighting very similar to the first which had me thinking I had another 90+ king, eventually managed to tire this one out as well and got it to the surface, easily 80-85cm when the hooks pulled. Normally I would be fuming but I was kind of relieved, I was going to release it anyway and landing it would have been another mission in itself. Ran out of squid and was out of there at 9am, best session I've had in a few months. Looks like its going to be a good season

People have different opinions, but for me personally I find anything east of the harbour bridge to be fine, the pollution people talk about Is under layers of sediment at the bottom of the harbour, the water itself has never been cleaner. West of the bridge pelagic fish which are found higher up in the water column such as kingfish and bonito would be fine they could be a few kilometres offshore one day and up the Parramatta river the next so any "possible" pollution wouldn't effect them at all, the only fish you'd watch out for are the ones that bury themselves or feed off the sediment like whiting flathead and flounder.

Hello tash welcome to the site,

In regards to snagging, most places around rocky areas would be quite snaggy so the simple solution is to not use a sinker at all, this lets the bait move around naturally which is more appealing to the fish and wont snag up anywhere near as often. Alternatively you could fish off wharves around Sydney harbour, there are plenty of areas that hold good fish during summer such as Clifton gardens, balmoral and pier 2 just to get you started.

[Leader material]

As mentioned above as long as you're confident in the gear you use then that's the main thing. Personally I exclusively use fluorocarbon and have never had an issue with knot strength, tying knots, line snapping more easily etc. Ive found it to make a huge difference especially targeting landbased kings. Ive fished side by side with people using mono and they haven't had a bite whilst ive caught a few kings. Again that could come to numerous other variables but simply, I haven't found fluro to reduce my catch rates, if anything ever since I started using it ive caught more and bigger fish than before I started using it. One memory that comes to mind was one session in the harbour last year, a school of kings follows up another guys live yakka as he retrieved it, they bumped it and stayed circling it for a while but none of them had a proper go at it, I casted a pillie cube in behind and it got taken within seconds, he was using some fat grey mono looked about 40lb, I was using 12lb fluro. Again there are a few other variables but I believe if he was using a clear line he would have atleast hooked up.

Hey mate yeah at the moment theres a few fish around north harbour so areas like balmoral and the spit bridge are holding some fish. Just gotta be at the right place at the right time

As for water temp Ive found them to go harder in cooler water than the ones you get up north in warm water. Air temp is cold but the sea is still 17.5 down here around Montague, which is much warmer than NZ where they have very cool water and very hard fighting kings. 

That's a good point, yeah i'm not sure, maybe it was choking on the yellowtail, it was hooked in the corner of the mouth and it was a well conditioned fish so that's the only other thing that might have slowed it down.

Yeah i noticed that scratchie,  for a king its size it came up pretty easy, must be the cold water slowing their metabolism

Hey Raiders long time between reports been very busy lately and havent had much free time but finally got to head oit this morning for a session.  Headed to my usual haunt in the harbour at about 630, wasnt expecting anything too crash hot as its winter, so i was mainly targetting trevally but those plans were quickly thrown out. As me and my mate arrived on location, we began burleying up and immediately began seeing lollipop yellowtail about 10cm long, caught about 8 of them and they dissapeared as soon as the sun was abit brighter in the sky. My mate send one out first on a float and that was quickly slammed by a solid salmon that went 68cm, quick pic and released. I got a yellowtail out soon after and it got hit as soon as it touched the water but it was ripped off the hook, quickly grabbed another yellowtail and lobbed it out this time kept the bail open and line began to fly off after about 10 seconds, closed the bail and came up tight. After a nice tussle i was expecti ng another salmon but was surprised when a nice king came up, my mate netted it and in the esky it went, measuring 73cm. My mate got another king that was undersize aroind the 60cm mark and the action died out after that with only a couple of trevally caught afterwards. All in all it was a nice session to clear the cobwebs and good to see some nice kings still about.

Hey Archilles no problem i just use a single hook in the tip of the hood and cast them out unweighted. The more natural the better if youre after kings consistently

Headed to the harbour early yesterday morning as conditions looked good with the wind due to pick up by mid morning. Arrived on location at 0500 and began squidding, it was tough work but eventually managed 3 small calamari in total which had me hopeful of some kings, I had pillys as backup but I mainly wanted to use them for burley. Was a slow start but eventually there was some baitfish that started showing up and some birds looking very active. Began burleying hard with pilchards and immediately some big trevally showed up as well as some bream but no kings yet. Decided it was probably time to send out a live squid so quickly rigged it up and lobbed it out. I kept the bail open and put the rod against the railing, turned around to chop up more burley and turned around to see line peeling off the reel steadily, then stopping, then again coming off even faster. I grabbed the rod, gave it 5-10 seconds then loaded up to some good weight then it went slack. Whatever it was must've been grabbing the squid around the head  . Quickly rigged up another squid and sent it out but this time I kept my eye on it. About 1 minute later same thing, line began peeling off steadily, gave it a good 30 seconds this time then grabbed the rod and loaded up. This time the weight loaded up properly and after a few headshakes the fish realised it had been hooked and took off on a screamer of a run and on its way tangled 2 other peoples lines, after a few tense moments managed to free the lines and the fight resumed. The fish took another good run then came in and tried to slug it out around the pylons, it got me under on its first attempt but thankfully the line didn't touch and it came out, a few seconds later it was in the net.Put it on the brag mat and it went 78cm and pretty fat as well.  Sent out the last squid which got picked, and the wind started picking up a lot so decided to call it a day and head home at 0830. Not a bad little session.
