  1. i went on one of the skinny little fishing boats which i would recommend. Me and a mate basically joined a fisherman on his little outrigger boat and learnt how simple fishing can be or moreso how much our fancy gear can complicate things. We spent the day trolling and chasing congregating schools (watching the forming birds) and it only cost me $50Au. He (the driver) would pretty much take us for however long but we turned in pretty early as my mate was extremely hung over.

  2. Yes standing on the groynes, although i sometimes call them breakwalls incase people don't understand the term groyne.

Casting diagonally back towards shore on the run-out tide and casting diagonally away from shore on the run-in tide.

If your interested in targetting flathead on soft plastics you will do well to read Hodgey's topics as well as information submitted by others on fishraider, just use the search function and get ready for a wealth of information. You can also search up videos on youtube if your a visual learner.

    Monch

just curious, which groynes do you have most luck on?? i tried the western most groyne a few times for zuilch

  3. Well it looks like i probably try some of those places at the hacking, iv attempted at wallys wharf once but that place was chock a block, even at 11 at night.

Mate i sight fished squid there, The bad thing is because its a river mouth you have to wait until the water is really clean bfore you'll get squid there.Overcast weather is good.

    SL,

Do squid follow the clean/clear water?

  4. Hey guys,

would really like to try my hand at some squid to feed either a juicy kingy or myself.

I rarely have a great deal of time so would need to go somewhere close by (landbased). Im thinking captain cook bridge either sutherland side off the old boat ramp (but surely the jig would struggle in all the weed?) other option was the wharf on the opposite side. If anyone has had any luck these places i would greatly appreciate an inside word.

    Cheers

  5. thru the mouth?? I find putting the hooks thru the nose is a better spot, it's got a bone there which is much stronger. Not sure how you put it thru the mouth.

yeah sorry thats what i meant i think, through the jaw would be a more appropriate way of saying it. as in up under the chin and out of the nose

  6. G'day,

this is my first post, loving the site so i thought id get involved

Always loved having a fish but was never all that serious but now doing shift work so i'm finding myself getting right back into it, and loving it, never really used live baits before so i thought id have a try.

had a crack using some Poddy mullets as live baits and got myself a good bream , 44cms (beginners luck) i was thinking i might pick up a flathead but the bream was a good surprise

was wondering if i could get pointed in the right direction in regards to rigging up the livebait , i was just using a 3/0 circle hook (either in the mouth or in the back)

but i lost a few poddys with no fish to show for it ,would love any tips on how to improve my chances

    Cheers!

iv always been told through the mouth is the best bet with poddies, though havent had a great deal of experience with them. just curiously where about are u getting your poddies and u getting them with a trap?

Here is a selection of pencils

    post-3198-126718819142_thumb.jpg

The row on the left are NW 52's, the middle row is Zappa 55s, the end row is Sammy 65's and the bottom right hand corner is a stiffy.

In answer to your question, one way to describe the difference between pencils and poppers is shape. A popper has a curved 'cup' face at the front, and is usually tapered in shape.A pencil is more an elongated shape with an angled chin. (This is a very broad description as manufacturers are always modifying designs).

A better way to describe the difference between the two is action. Basically, the cup face of a poppers bites into the water surface, pushing a spray of water in front. A pencil glides across the top of the water in a swaggering side-to-side motion, which is described as 'walking the dog'. (We won't confuse the issue and discuss bevy pops and suga pens that can do both :biggrin2: )

As a general rule of thumb, when the water is relatively flat, give the pencils a whirl. When the wind picks up and the water surface is rougher, try your poppers. If there's one thing I have learnt it is that there are very few 'rules' to hang your hat on when it comes to surface luring. As the others have mentioned, have a look through the Lure and Fly reports and you will see some different approaches and philosophies. They all work!

You will learn a hell of a lot by spending just one day on the water with someone who is proficient in surface lures, their action and where to toss them, and there are a heap of people of all ages on our forums that fit that bill nicely. With a bit of luck, one of them is located near you! ;) Fishing with surface lures is a fantastic experience. It is highly visual, extremely rewarding, and will open up locations you couldn't previously fish without getting entangled in weeds and mud. Good luck!

    Cheers

thats a dangerous photo, looks like my savings will suffer again this week those pencils look awesome.

Might be obvious but why would you put on bigger hooks?

  8. i felt like we moved into the wrong spot by setting up a lazy drift in towra, it seemed like there was a bit of action in the bay but we were both over the moon thought and couldnt be bothered dealing with much else. i didnt see anything at all being pulled by other boats did any other raiders get any solid fish on the saturday??

  9. Went out this morning and got onto the water about 6am. Went quickly to baldface and got some live bait, herring im pretty sure. After we had about 10 we headed over near the airport. Picked a marker and set camp, sent the first bait under a float then the other with a size 2 sinker and no exaggeration about 1 minuted after it was in it holder it got smacked. Was soo nervous when it was on the line as i had a good idea what it was. Boated it and it was a king at 68cm! I am still over the moon.

We left livies out to no more such luck, on bait picked up a 39cm flattie and 33cm trev which went back but the flatty and kingy werent soo lucky.

I saw a reasonable amount of action around the marker hitting the surface, splashes sounded of reasonable size, what would this of been? i tried a couple lures but to no avail.

The rest of the day was spent dealing with the swarm of baby snapper.

no photos, if only i had a camera!! too late now as he is cut up and ready to eat for tea tonight!

  10. When i go there i usually fish off the little wharf or if the wharf is too packed i go on the groynes. This time however i was on the wharf. With the plastics i usually get some nice flathead and whiting and even the odd trevor but that day was just quiet other than those two tailors.

    Cheers.

    SL

i live about 2 minutes from there, have only really tried fishing there twice and went home empty handed

  11. grats mate :) i am just starting on poppers my self but from what i've seen Roberta seems know a fair bit about poppers/pencils for bream etc.. :) shallow weedy areas seem to be good spots to try i tried last week at the oyster leases in botany bay had a few swipes which got me excited :D but no hook ups :(

    I was near there!

fishing around sylvania waters/capt cook bridge will definatelty be giving the lures a better go on the boat on the weekend.

  12. bought myself some poppers the other day, 2 smaller models (bushys stiffy popper and a cheapie) and a larger rooster popper. Tried the small ones yesterday and fell in love. Really enjoyed how visible the fishing is being able to see the swipes at the lures. ended up getting a 24cm bream and 30cm flathead (which was very unexpected) within about 30-45 minutes. So im just wondering what peoples tactics are with poppers in regards to retrieves etc? Also is there an ideal depth to fish them?

    cheers

  13. HI Raiders,

I have been living & fishing the Central Coast now for about 7 years, the majority of my fishing is in the estuary system. Very keen to improve my capbility off the beach & gain some tips where possible.

Anyone have suggestions for fishing North Entrance?

    Thanks,

    M

was there a week ago and was fishing into the lake, got my first flattie on a hardbody very hapy!

At the time though everyone seemed to be doing well off the beach was absolutely packed but saw some good numbers of fish atleast compared to the lake where i saw maybe 2 legal fish caught the whole time.

  14. i spent half my holiday up the coast trying to get poddies and learnt a few things from multiple empty traps...

just a note the trap i was using was similiar to the alvey style.

I first found leaving the trap was a no no. berley trails from the traps were getting eaten by gulls. Instead it was alot more time efficient to stay and add a slow steady burley till they were on the boil around the trap.

Shallow waters were alot more productive, where i had the best results was probly in only about 6-8 inches of water.

One poddy in the trap will bring more in, they seem to gather aound and there was a heck of alot more activity when there was poddy/ies in the trap. For this reason i was leaving one poddy in when i emptied the trap, BUT i also learnt they WILL often swim out of the alvey style traps but it was still worth it to bring more fish in.

After getting home i tried catching them by line and observed a bit their feeding habit a bit closer, the bigger sized mullet seem to prefer floating bread. also floating baits seem to make the muller 'splash' from what i saw the commotion brought ALOT more around for a feed this is opposed to doughy bread which sank and often only eaten by the tiny piddly stuff.

have had good results on a handline size 12 hook no sinker and bread not completely squashed onto the hook so it may float slightly

now all i have to do is actually get some results from using them, anyone have any suggestions where i can take these poddies for some BIG flatties in botany/georges river?

PS a note on using them which people have hammered into my head is if pinning them through the back/shoulder use an offset hook, if through the nose a straight hook. may be begginer stuff but its helped me.

  15. If your after kingies then get some slugos on a worm hook and throw it at the markers and rip em back as fast as you can, you'll soon be on a kingfish. Check all your gear and knots and make sure your happy with your set up and drag becouse they dont play nice.

also quite curious on these things, but whats are slugos?

  16. hey guys first post after trying to sign up for a long time (email adress issues).

just got myself a small tinnie and have not had many trips and have definately not had alot of luck. Only really manage to bring back (at most) one fish per trip currently as my knowledge and experience in the bay by boat is limited.

Enjoy throwing around some plastics for flatties and wondering if anywhere is a goer right now?

have seen alot of boat gathering at towra on a runout when i cross the bridge heading to work. Are any members having any luck around there?

pretty broad question i know but i dont have many 'fishy' friends to chat to.

    Cheers.

PS is there anywhere to gather live bait without heading all the way over to moll point? ( i put in at st george motor boat)
