  1. Hi guys,

I dont know if this is the right place the put this but the mods can move it if necessary.

    Quick question:

Any recommendations for fishing charters in the Bay of Islands area New Zealand?

I want to target NZ kingies.

Nothing too pricey and overwhelming as I will be going with my girlfriend and I dont know how keen she is to tackle a NZ monster :1prop:

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Hi Grug

When I live bait off the rocks I use a number 16 rubber band to attach my balloon to my main line. I wrap the lack band around my main line about 8 or so times and put the tag end through the other end of the band. I snug it up and then tie the balloon to the band. I don't need a stopper and can pretty much tie the balloon where ever I want.

When a fish strikes the band breaks and I fight the fish normally.

I reckon this is the best way of doing it. I've use lighter line attached to the swivel and balloon but it always seemed to tangle with my main line.

I use a wind on leader usually around 2.5m or so and a double that at least lets me get a few wraps of it on the reel while the fish is still in the water.

Although I'm unfamiliar with wind-on leaders, I think I get the idea.

    Thanks so much!

  3. Hi guys,

Not trying to sound too novice but was wondering the setup needed to float live bait off rocks.

If attaching stopper, float then swivel,

    1) Where should the stopper be set?

    2) How long should the leader be?

    3) Knots to be tied?

    OR

    1) Main line attached to swivel

    2) Balloon attached to swivel?

    3) How long should leader be?

    Thanks in advance!

  4. I have a tld 25 myself. Ive got 50lb braid on there but you can go up to 80 if you want, depending on how thick it is, with some the diameter is very thin even for 80lb so you can fit alot more braid on there. Spool the reel with some mono first and then put on the braid. In regards to hooks I generally use the Gamagatsu Live Bait hooks size 9.0 I think. Also depending on what type of rig you are doing which will determine what sort of hooks you are going to use. But generally for just throwing out a live yakka or slimy you can use the hook i mentioned. With your leader just buy your self some 60-80lb shock leader. My TLD is purely for live baiting so I don't use any lures or soft plastics because the outfit is just too god damn heavy and you can'r really cast. What sort of rod are you matching it up with? I use a Wilson Live Fibre with a roller tip. Its 11ft and thick so its really heavy. If your LBG"ing then i suggest you get yourself a gimble belt as well because it can be tiring supporting it with just your arms for the whole day esp if you ever hook onto something big.

    Thanks for the info!!!

    Much appreciated.

I had the same rough idea with all the above you mentioned.

  5. Hi guys!

Long time reader first time poster.

I am going down to JB next week for some land based action. Our targets are bonito, salmon, kings and maybe tuna. Target size for the pelagics are anything legal to nothing too big! (I heard jb can provide even provide marlins).

Just wanted some suggestions on gear for the below.

Reel - I heard a tld 25 is a cheap overhead reel that will do the job for generously size kings.

Line - mono, fluro or braid and what lb?

Leader - again, mono, fluro or braid and what lb?

    Hooks - size and type?

    Spinners - e.g?

    Soft plastics - e.g?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!
