  1. yeah bloody go pros :) but they are great thing and in general they are pretty reliable, I had my iphone as a backup anyway so it's all good

I never landed a marlin in my 15 footer, I hooked a few but I dropped them. One time I hooked a stripped tuna and about 10 feet from the boat a huge mako came up and ripped to shreds, I almost crapped myself. I was about 10 miles offshore by myself.

I used strap the engine key lanyard to my wrist every time it got a bit rough, so if I went over board at least the engine would stop. I also kept a small a rubber duckie in the cabin to inflate in case of an emergency as well. I think your boat would be harder to sink than mine was, some of the smaller boats now are probably safer than the bigger ones in terms of keeping afloat

If I was doing it today, I would wear an inflatable life jacket all the time and have a GPS Epirb on my belt all the time, so if I went overboard I would inflate the jacket and turn on the epirb if I couldn't get back to the boat. I think they are about $500 and they last about 8 years, they are well worth it.

for sure its scary at times, but its awesome

Yeah your right about that... Hey have you been out with Nomad? I used to be a guide up there and remember testing those Sent Blazer Lures with a few guys..cheers

  2. well done, a small boat but a mighty one, some great fish there, I used go out miles solo in my 15ft half cabin, it was great fun but scary at times :)

I got my first solo marlin this year as well. Would you believe my go pro stuffed up on that day, the battery crapped out, so I recorded most of it on my Iphone for the evidence, I will post it up as soon as I get bit of time to edit it.

Cograts Mate on the Solo Marlin!

Yeah Peter I have had the GoPro fog up or the battery run out half way through the fight and then finding my spare and changing it while fighting a crazy Black Marlin...haha It is a bit freaky sometimes when out on the shelf solo and most of the time I don't see any other boats out there.. My biggest fear is getting pulled in while in the harness or having a Marlin jump in the boat.. The risk is worth the reward..

  3. How fast are you trolling roughly, and how far back is your spread? I find it tricky to troll in that 'sweat spot' in my Poly solo. always having to ride the throttle.

Hey man normally troll about 6-8kn and run lures at different distances every time depending on changing conditions, run a short corner and a shotgun out the back and split those two with another one or two in between. Also if you run a teaser put a lure a few meters behind that. Very hard to clear everything when fishing solo but it's a challenge and great fun...

  4. Went to Crowdy on Sat because water was unreal in close with plenty of fish a few days earlier, water ended up being 19.3 and green..just crap. The next day my mate headed to SWR cause their were little blacks everywhere but gone the next day and only a couple hooked and water was a bit green. Port sunday had a few boats hooking over 20 fish..what can u do, every day its different. .

  5. Good on ya for going out but I dont know why your crew were sleeping?? You should tell them to stay at home in bed if they want to sleep.. I stand up all day for more than 12hrs in a centre console, always on the lookout for a free swimmer, birds, bait etc..loosing good fish due to lazyness is not bad luck..and it is a stripey not a bonito- Your fired!

  6. Nice couple of Albies mate. If you are keen to team up in the 4.5m boats to nail a Bluefin next season give me a yell. In the mean time I hope there are plenty of marlin on offer for you this summer!

With respect to the size of the boat. I can say a 4.5m boat is very safe with a competent skipper and the common-sense not to take any unnecessary risks weather wise. You are safer in a 4.5 on a good day than someone in a 6m half cabin that risks some dicey weather.

Yeah true that mate, if I know the weather is going to turn bad in the arvo, I will head back early or not go out at all.. its good having a few boats out to, so U can split up and find the fish and for safety and just to talk to someone.. 12hrs trolling around can get to u after a while..when the bluefin turn up im keen 4sure! Cheers mate

  7. Good response, clearly you are well prepared and highly experienced so the risk is known, prepared for and you know what to do in case of problems. I have taken numerous calculated risks myself over the years and never had a problem but I think it behoves us more experienced folk to stress key safety provisions that form a vital part of going offshore alone.

Hence my concern was that your super effort (which it is by any criteria) may encourage some totally inexperienced fishos to copy you and coming undone in a big way.

No criticism intended, and I agree that going alone (be it boating, diving, hunting or bushwalking) remains an adrenalin charged experience that has few equal. See you on the water some day.

    Cheers

    Paikea

Thanks Paikea your concerns are appreciated.. The main thing I would say to fishos going Solo is to wear the lanyard to cut engine if U fall in or get pulled overboard by a good fish..I know of a couple of people that fell out of the boat and tried to climb back in and got chopped by the prop..not pretty. Cheers

  8. Yeah mate I know what your saying and believe me my family say the same thing.. I would hope fellow fishers use their brains and have the appropriate safety gear. I have been a fishing guide for many years working in remote locations and all weather conditions.. To me it is just as risky as jumping out of a plane, rock climbing, surfing and many other sports.. This is what I love to do for a challenge and I could easily go with mates that own 30ft + game boats but its not for me.. OLD MAN AND THE SEA STYLE. and I dont want to die doing this but if I do, so be it.. Thanks for your opinion and everyone is entiltled to there own opinion! See you out on the water..

  9. Congrats on the catch

Very brave to go that far solo, guess you had freinds on other boats nearby?

Na mate just went out myself on Sat and I like to find my own spots and try to stay away from other boats, so if u find the fish U have them all to yourself..cheers

  10. What type of boat is that mate? How does it handle offshore?

Well done on the Albies! And even better that it was a solo effort!

Thanks mate, the boat is a Polycraft and its the best boat I have ever owned for its size..really handles well and during the marlin season im out on the shelf nearly every week and the weather is not always perfect believe me! If U have anymore questions feel free to ask..cheers

  11. Hey thanks guys, my boat is a 4.5m Polycraft. I Headed out from Broken Bay early Sat morn and headed out for the shelf in search of a big Yellow Fin or a nice Blue Marlin.. found plenty of stripies on the shelf but nothing else. I than head out further in search of better fish, I ended up finding most of the fish in 500 fathoms and a couple in 300 fathoms.. I was trying to fish a bit of temp break between 20.3 & 21.8.. conditions were nice and I was happy that I wasnt getting smashed by 30kn winds for a change.. Their is always next wk for the big Blue or YF.. cheers

  12. Hey guys, went out the other day fly fishing for blackfish off the rocks on the central coast and caught about 17 in a few hrs..this fish was the biggest for the session at 39.5cm and for once I had the measure with me,this fish was released to fight another day and hopefully I can catch him again when he reaches 50+...Great fun on the 8wt! Cheers
