  1. Hi Raider,

I bought a second hand Seastar steering kit last year for my project boat. Yesterday I got time to install it. While bleeding it, I turned the wheel to the left continuously to bleed and the helm did not lock to the left but it did lock to the right perfectly. Not sure I have done wrong or it is a faulty pump/helm. Please help.

I know with mercury there are plenty on ebay.  I found it similar in price to what my local mercury dealer sold so I went local just in case I was given the wrong thing.  eBay can sometimes be confusing.  The dealer just punches in my serial number and gives me the correct parts.

Thanks a lot. I called Hunt Marine in Sydney. They transfer me to Wollongong store then the guy ask me to provide phone and serial number advise me to call me back. Since then, it never happens. I think i have to buy from ebay.

a lot of people in our fishing club that crab in lake mac set their witches hats in a line then sit close by and fish so they can keep an eye on them...unattended floats get pulled all too often up here so I assume its the same elsewhere...as a side note fisheries check floats all the time and if the float is not legal size.shape.and details of owner.plus weight on the rope  they take them..so anyone using bottles or pool noodle up here can expect to have them seized...rick

    Hi Rick,

Yes, I used milk bottles as float, however if the fisheries got my trap they should see clearly my phone number their and kindly give me a call if they are not allowed. This was too obvious some scumbags around there.

  4. Hi Raiders.

First of all Happy New Year to all of you with my best wishes. Secondly, just kindly report that I went out yesterday in Botany Bay. After dropped 2 crab pots down and then ahead out to oil wharf just got a few breams and trevalies and plenty of rat kings under the heavy rain. Head back to the crab pots location to pick up. Surprisingly both of them were gone, some scum bags had stolen my pots. This is the first time in my life seeing how bad people these days. Not sure how I could prevent this happens again, please help.

    Tied line guys

    Hi there,

My story. Lived in Auckland and had a 6m wooden boat, got sick of sanding. Purchased a Brand New Surtees 5.5 Hardtop. Then after a 2 month wait it arrived. Put the motor from 6m Boat on the Surtees and sold the 6m boat to a guy who said he liked sanding, had the trailer fitted to the 5.5 by Surtees. Then after 2 months I got a job offer in Sydney so we took it. Employer paid for transport of the boat as I would not leave without it.

I purchased the boat new so I paid NZ GST on it of 15%. As I Exported the boat less than one year after it was purchased I had to pay GST on it in Australia as well and I could not get the GST back I paid in NZ:1wallbash:. Wife was not happy:ranting2:. The 5% Tariff was mandatory. I was still better off as buying that boat over here was dearer in Australia. And we now live in the Lucky Country with a Surtees. All worked out well.

Not sure what the Surtees Dealer model is. I purchased from the dealer in Aucklands Suburb Takapuna. Guy called Andrew. Don't know if you can buy direct as there is a dealer in Sydney, Good guys.

Ended up getting a new motor over here. So if you buy second hand make sure it is over 1 year old or you will get hit with taxes or if you buy new make sure you don't take possession of it in NZ and don't pay NZ GST.

I will message the name of the employee we dealt with at Conroys.  He was awesome.

    Thanks a lot again mate.

I imported my boat from NZ. Used Conroy removals, they were super awesome and went above and beyond. I put mine in a container as the trailer was too hard due to compliance issues between ANZ. Trailer is the hard part.Catch 22, you can't get the trailer certified at the shipping yard and you can't drive it with out it being certified. Also the trailer may need mods to be certified which you can't do at the yard or with a boat on it......to hard.  My boat was new so the compliance cert on the boat was done to one of these global standards recognised  in AU as they sell them here as well. Was a Surtees.

You will have to pay Stamp Duty or import tarrif of 5% They don't miss you.

Also if the boat is used and under a certain age you will need to pay GST on it which sucks!! You will need to show papers on the boats value and what you paid for it as proof.

In a lot of ways your better off buying it new from in NZ AUS and not paying the NZ15% GST on it and getting clobbered with the 10% AU GST when it comes in. You get way more bang for dollar for boats in NZ than you do here. When I did it the exchange rate was 75 cents so I got a bargain.

If you call Conroy Removals in NZ they have a guide on how it all works. They were great.

Just be aware of the taxes. There is no escape.

Oh and I was warned, if you are doing roll on roll off (Not in a container) Strip the boat completely down as the ship boys are known to help themselves.

If you leave the trailer behind you have the issue of collecting it without a fitted trailer, again as they sell my boat here I purchased a trailer from the dealer all set and ready to go, Went to the yard in West Sydney and they crew craned it on for me.

    Good luck,

    Lots of paper work!

    Hi Recurve,

Your information is GOLD. I am about to import a brand new aluminum boat 5.5M max length without a trailer. I have not decided which brand yet. A Suttee is one on my short listed. Just wonder when you bought your one, it was brand new? if yes you bought it directly from manufacture or through dealer? Did you travel to NZ to buy the boat from dealer/manufacture ?By the way, I live in Sydney.

    Cheers

  7. Hi Raiders,

I am a long time Gumtree user. Yet, I had sold a lot of items from Gumtree  and of course I had a lot of low ballers anyway. They are (low ballers) who don't really annoy me because they have the right to bargain down for their hard earn money and for that reason they are in Gumtree. What really annoys me is the Seller who sell his/her 10 years old boat for the price of brand new boat.

Well you said 5.5m alloy so those models popped up (and also they have a light towing weight). I haven't owned a Crv so I am just going by what I know. As I said if you are well under the max tow weight I don't see too much of a problem. The biggest drawback would be that it would be a bit slow and underpowered. As I said if you are just going a short distance to the local boat ramp you can  put up with such shortcoming at least for a while.

PS if you do decide to get a better tow vehicle then there is no need to go to much expense. A Ford Falcon from AU!! on will tow a 1.3 T rig easily and are cheap as chips (depending on the year model). Actually they have a higher tow rating than a lot of medium 4WDs.

Thanks a lot your 2 cents worth more than that.

I'd get the boat first and see how it goes. If you are well under the vehicles rating of 1500 kg I don't see what the problem is. Pressed tinnies and the likes of the Surtees and Barcrusher of 5.5m shouldn't be more than 1.2 or 1.3 T fully laden.

That is correct, how do you know I am going to go for Surtees/Barcrusher  ?. My Crv rating 1.5T but again I want to know if any one does it in real life. I don't want to go to expensive upgrade from the boat to the car.

Honda CR-V are also not all wheel drives and you will struggle on a slippery ramp, they are Front wheel drive until you have wheel slip and then a rear wheel will come into play.

My CRV is All Wheel Drive according to the specification. I have been towing my boat with it with no problem at all.

  14. 1 hour ago, Sigma said:

I wouldn't even attempt to tow it with a CRV.

When I bought my Quintrex 560 Freedom Sport, it was registered in Victoria but the owner had it here in NSW.

In order to register it NSW, he needed to take it over a weigh bridge. Completely empty with the Dunbier trailer, it weighed 1530Kg. Adding your fuel, eskies and everything else could add up to 1700-1750Kg

At the time, I had a Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo and when I hooked it up, even with the Falcon you could really feel the weight when you were towing it. Due to this, the Falcon absolutely guzzled the fuel. I would go from Liverpool to Botany and it would waste nearly half a tank (65ltr tank) of fuel.

Since then, I traded the Falcon and bought a new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (2.4 Turbo Diesel) as it is a proper 4WD and I love how it tows the boat now and the fuel gauge hardly moves.

Mate, my advice is, get a diesel....they were made for towing.

It looks like I have to upgrade the car before I can upgrade the boat. My Boss won't approve for this expensive upgrade lol.

  15. Hi Raider,

I have been thinking of upgrading my 4.5 Polycraft to 5.5  boat. At this moment I have a Honda CRV 2003 AWD model with 1500kg towing capacity according to the specification. I am not sure if any member try to tow a 5.5 boat on this car. Your 2 cents chip in is much appreciated.

it sounds like your in the right area, with your jig size i usually use size 2.5 natural colours or glow jigs and the only other thing i can suggest is to make sure your jig always hit the bottom when your jigging back to the boat with a couple of long pauses in between.

Thanks for your advice. Look likes i have to downside to 2.5. I can not leave long pauses because too much wee there. Lost a few jigs before but maybe thats why i did not get any ....catch 22 here.

    Hi mate

what spots did you try and what size & colour jigs did you use.

I tried the wee bed in front of Kernel boat ramp then move to another one close to oil wharf then move to Bare Insland then move to the golf course. Jig were Black magic and Yamashita natural blue, Red/orange, white and black. size from 2.4/3.0/3.5
