  1. Hey mate, spent the entire last weekend on a houseboat in Waratah looking for the hairtail with the same result. Plenty of yakka's in the bay along with what looked like pilchards busting up all over the place but not a single hairtail was caught from what i saw. Put in some solid hours from 2pm through till 6am the next morning. Nothing. :mad3:

Hoping they show up sometime shortly.

  2. Dave, that set up would be great for reds on plastics depending on jig weight.

If your worried about grunt tie on a snap swivel and connect it up to say your cloths line. keep upping the drag until the line breaks. you will be amazed at how much hurt you can deal out with a rig like that. It is all about rod angles. (nothing past 90 degrees)

Couldnt agree more. Probably could have landed them on 10lb braid with 10 - 10lb fluro provided you work the drag right and keep that rod tip high. I was using a mates g-loomis 7ft and i beleive it was around 6-10lb stick with a daiwa sol 3000 reel that seem to do the trick just fine. It was a tussle at first to make sure you get them off the bottom and near any nasty reefs but after that all the fun is in setting the drag just right and slowly letting the buggers tire themselves out

  3. Hi Raiders,

First post in a long time so here we go…..

Had an opportunity to join some friends on Saturday for a morning of chasing some of the elusive big reds. 6am start and we were onboard the “TopDog” and heading to Port Stephens in hope of finding the big girls. 40mins later we had reached our destination. Wind was low and chop was minimal, what a day it was looking to be!

    ……….And boy was I right!

Lines out, and everyone working hard it wasn’t long till my rod buckled over. Line peeling, wild headshakes, and rod tip in the water. This is what I had been waiting for in all my years of fishing!

About 10 minutes later, up comes a massive +70cm red. Massive high fives all round. Within 10 minutes my mate was on and the reel was screaming again. Another massive red. This lasted about 2hrs with us boating 7 reds, getting dusted twice and dropping a couple due to bent jigs or busted leader (they were swallowing the plastics right down and their teeth were causing us issues).

The wind really started to come up by lunch time and made the fishing the area hard work as currents were running strong and plastics were hard to keep in the right level of the water column. With a top catch on board we decided to call it a day

In all it was a fantastic day out on the water and not only did I set my new PB Snapper, but I was heading home with a fantastic feed of fish!

Massive thank you to Matthew “TopDog” and Tommy “Asian Tom” for teaching me your secrets. You guys are the best in the business!

    Tight lines guys!

  4. . Best advice though would be to invest in a pittwater charter and learn from it. Good luck.

    On Strike

    Hi Paul,

Mate i can’t thank you enough, you are a true gentleman! That is some awesome advice you have just offered and i will be sure to give all of those a shot.:yahoo::thumbup:

We have rented a 35' Fly bridge and although its the kind of ship you'd be taking to browns, our rental policy states we can leave Pittwater or the river. I’m hoping that the boat has a sounder (hard to imagine it wouldn’t) and hopefully i can find myself that reef.

Great advice and ill certainly be looking into a local charter sometime real soon so I can get a better understanding of where is hot in Pittwater, as it is such a nice place to fish.

Once again, thanks a million and hopefully i can post a report of our catch soon after..fingers crossed.

    Tight lines!

    Chris.

  5. Hi Guys,

Went out to Pittwater on Sat night, started at 2am and fished till lunch on Sunday.

Caught absolutley nill. Tried a few places, near the basin and around Narrenjoey head with no luck.

Were in search of Kings or even feed of flatties. A mate of mine and I have rented a houseboat for a coule of days and will be in and around the same area. Was hoping some of you may have some pointers for me as where to fish around Pittwater or if there are any good places to try in the hawesbury at the moment?

Were are not targeting anything in specific, just hoping to find somewhere to catch a few fish. Any thoughts guys? Any luck round there areas of late??

Your help is very much appreciated!

  6. Hi Guys,

I have been chasing for these thing all around the Haweksubry over the last few months to find nothing. Spending this weekend on another house boat looking for them. Can anyone please offer some advice as to where i may find a jew? These boat trips are costing me and arm and a leg to sit all night on a houseboat hoping to hear my baitrunner scream at least once ....but nothing :(

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Cheers,
