A couple of nice fish to make the day.

One thing about those naked legs - do not drop an angry flattie in there. :074:

Yep-  Couldnt get the landing net out so leadered it into the  footwell and copped a spike in my foot

  2. Bought a second hand yak last week and this morning was my first chance to see if it floated.
Went out to an area id never fished before on a tide i normally wouldnt favour in the estuaries -low rising. But thats the window i had so i took it. Figuring out how to setup still i kept it simple with 2 rods - one a soft plastic, the other a hb that woukd troll as i paddled round.
A light headwind against the tide reminded me im the wise side of 45, and a few teething problems with the rudder made the going adventurous, but i got to the furthest i planned on going - a deepish channel next to a flat with a mangrove island. Nothing hit the hb, so i started throwing the plastic.
3 casts in I was rewarded with a small flatty. Few more and smashed by a bream. Added some scent snd hooked another flatty - prob going 40-45cm which went into the esky.
Gave it another 30 min before i had to head home.

Best way is to drift , I usually drift from patonga to lion island or visa versa  around 100m from the shore . What you are looking for is to drift along the edge of a drop off where the water goes from 20ft into around 35 ft . Mix it up so if you don’t get anything on the first drift go in closer to shore or out wider - search for fish .

If you look at a marine chart you will see the subtle changes in depth which funnel the prawns and bait fish into one spot , another tactic is to fish the rubbish lines that form on the surface as these are the demarcation zones where the current flows and slows and fish use the to feed .

Good tips there xd. I mainly fish from shore but my brothers getting a boat soon so will keep an eye on these spots

  4. Bought “my son” a new lure yesterday for flatties. To be fair he did pick it, after i gave him a choice. We went out yesterday arvo for zip. Pucked him up after school and had him and my daughter in tow. Decided lures are best for him cause it gives him casting practice and he just winds baits straight in as if they were lures anyway. So after 10min i caught my girst flatty - just over 40cm and not sure how many i was going to catch i let it go. Caught on a 4” paddle tail. Changed lures a few times till i tied on my sons lure ( by this stage he and my daughter were having more fun playing in the sand). After a few casts a 50cm + flatty comin home for dinner.  Next cast into a snag and lost his lure. Guess im gonna have to go back to the tackle shop 😉

  5. So i had some free time sat evening for a fish. Thought i would try for salmon or tailor off the beach, so off i went with some pillies. Cheched out first beach and the gutters were too wave affected with the onshore wind. Other side of the headland and a lot calmer and in the lee of the onshore so i quickly susd out a likely gutter and headed towards it. Unpacked my stuff on the sand and started rigging up when i discovered my sinkers hadnt made the trip. Unweighted pillies it was then. Casting them was ok but fishing them a bit tricky. Had to keep tension on the line to feel the bites and at the same time the surf would push the bait towards the shore. Was a bit slow to start but once i worked it out i started getting a few bites. Managed to get one salmon bout 60cm with a chunk out of its side, so i sent him back to live another life. Fished till an hour after dark but only managed the one fish. Made me realise how important sinkers are on the beach

  6. Hi there. I'm in the market for a new rod, preferably 6'10-7' long gonna use 10lb braid jighead 1/4 oz and above for flatties. Now i know people will say search previous forums, but I'm after something relatively stiff in the tip section. I used to have a shimano stimulus I think it was rated 10-17lb and it was perfect. Sadly it is no longer with me, hence a replacement. Anyone have any suggestions? Budget less than $200

  9. fished dy in front of the rock pool on wednesday at low tide, only an undersize pig and a few rock cod/ wirrahs beautiful day, so good fishin in shorts and tshirt that a few tourist came down to the waters edge to have a look, they didnt quite make it as a wave washed onto the shelf and soaked em, haha :074: while i just lifted a leg and let the wave wash by.

  10. Should be some Salmon around. I was out about 2 weeks ago and they were there in good numbers. Could be some Tailor around too, the odd one caught here and there....Port Jacksons after dark.

    S.

cheers mate, i was hoping they would be around, looks like a block of pillies for bait then.

  11. i think pete should be commended for keeping the flatty, yes its a big breeder but as he said- it was gut hooked so would of died anyway- at least he got a good feed out of it, is it more unethical to release a fish that has a low chance of survival than to quickly put it out and enjoy the rewards of the earth?
