  1. "I was wondering if anyone knows any good kayaking spots near Sydney.

Also would anyone any good spots on the Hawkesbury & the Harbour near boat ramps."

Any beach, road, ramp, bay, is easily accessible by kayak. Much more versatile than boats. Bayview is great with kayak, paddling up towards Palm Beach.

The kayak ramp is between the overhead pipe and the boatramp. When i say kayak ramp, you can't actually reverse into the water like at the boatramp. You park next to it and carry it down a few meters to the launch spot.

Its a good spot to launch from, I fish the area quite often. Don't forget fishing around Clontarf, Spit, Middle Head and Quarantine. All easy to access by kayak. When you feel able and ready, let me know and we can go out and take a peek around the heads up or down a couple of Km's. :yahoo:

  2. I'm sick of the "Nanny" society we live in, I can go "base jumping" or sky diving, but I have to wear a life jacket all the time in MY boat.Freedom is supposed to be valued, the Maritime authorities don't realy care if I live or die, but the revenue from fines & the extra tax generated by the forced sale of all the extra jackets will look good to them.

No offense mate, I don't think that the government is banking on raising revenue from people buying extra life jackets as its the law to already have them on the boat. However, in real life, having them on board and not wearing them is as useless as base jumping without your parachute. From observation, most fishos don't appear to be great swimmers. Therefore, when an "unexpected accident" happens, and your find yourself in the drink 20m away from your boat and 100m from shore, you will be happy that it will keep you afloat for a while instead of a slow drowning.

Besides, with the advent of modern vests, any fishing technique, or your overall experience would not be affected.

  3. Wow, what a day, thanks for helping the fellow man in need. I was out around Middle Harbour on Saturday as well in my kayak. Nothing much happening out there, however, I did manage a nice kingy from around the Spit. It punched well above its weight.

  4. I fish there regularly and mostly target squid. Good spot for that. Also, since I mostly fish during the week I manage to avoid the doodle dongers. However, on a particularly cold, Monday morning I had the best time and was totally justified to call my mate at 530am to tell him what was going on...

At first, this Asian dude walks down with a suitcase, later followed by a blonde. Absolutely magnificent because it was a naked photo shoot and she did all sorts of great poses and didn't mint me being 20m away just smiling ear to ear.:biggrin2: I stayed in that area for 3hrs catching no squid. :biggrin2:

  5. It's a little late, but since it has become my personal best, I might as well brag about it.

Fishing the Hacking (25/07), launched around 6am and right away there were several bust-ups. A very aggressive school of Salmon and I popped the cherry on my $1.39 Chinese lure. A great way to start the morning. As for weather, calm, glassy, no wind, no waves absolutely perfect.

Decided to take the action outside towards Shark Island. Had a go around the area but did not get anything. Back in we went for the time of our lives haha.gifhaha.gifhaha.gif

I was using pilchards but was not getting any results. Made the switch to plastics and hooked up to a porker of a flatty (~78CM). The thing fought all the way into and out of the net....I managed to net the beast and lift it into the yak when it just flopped and jumped out of the net back into the water....bye bye.....or so I thought. She was still on and I had a second chance at making this catch official and did it. It was released to fight another day. Overall, great day and I recorded my PB for a Flathead.

  6. Hey everyone,

Took my Soron STX40 out yesterday, and after a few spins of the handle it was pretty clear there was something wrong... It's rough, but not like there's something in it or out of place, it feels like corrosion :/... It has been meticulously looked after in the 8months that I have had it, (I've hade a shimano saros 1000 for a year now and it still feels good as new), the only explanation I have is a dodgy service- a couple of months ago when I had a broken arm it fell off the jetty, so I took it to a tackle store and they sent it away (cost me $80), it came back feeling different but good. Ive used it maybe 3 times since then, and now it feels rusty :(. I'm not sure what to do, could someone please help?

    Thanks

I know this may sound obvious, but take it back to the store that did the servicing. I got 2 Sorons and I treat them like I treat a rent-a-car :gun_bandana:. Also give them occasional TLC.

A possible explanation is that they might have replaced them with crap parts, or simply not put it back together correctly.

  7. Welcome mate. Nice sambo there. I caught quite a few from Garie Beach and that being my first time catching them, I was disappointed with the amount of fight that they put up. Could have been my heavy gear, but I just dragged them in. Next time, I won't bring a massive beach rod and give it a go for enjoyment.

  8. Hi raiders,

Taking my two little girls out for a fish tomorrow, can anyone suggest a good land based location in Sydney harbor where they won't be disappointed, I've tried a few different places but always seem unable to impress my kids, help please. Desperate dad!

Along the shoreline of Neilsen Park near Hermit Bay (Rose Bay area) is an ok spot. I usually fish from my yak, but notice quite a few families fishing along that shore. I'm sure people will give some other ideas.

    Alternatively,

Check out Dolls Point as that area usually produces some sort of excitement. I was there a while ago with 3 other blokes, all had good gear waiting for a fish. Along came a mother with a kid and had some kiddy rods, he chucked in a line and whamm, nice trevally. He had a blast while we looked on dumbfounded. Worth a try. (But that's Botany Bay)

  9. Hi mate -

Molli point is short for Molineux Point which is the shipping container breakwall stretching out from Yarra Bay.

On any given weekend , just look for 30 boats parked side by side and it will be molineux point... great place for Kingfish, Tailor, Salmon etc...

I'll be there this weekend myself!

    Cheers

    Trung

  10. They are great reels, I got a STX 60 coupled with a 6-10kg soron rod. Great combo imho. One question, what size/type line are you using on your STX 60?

IF you ever wanted to sell the STX 20, just let me know...:biggrin2:

  11. I have been looking to get an answer as well. I have a Sustain 4000fd and a couple of smaller reels that I would not mind upgrading. But as you said, is it worth it and are they better than the stock felt ones?

  12. I was up at Valentine near Newcastle. My mate is keen on prawning and took us out on Wed 29th night at Swansea (Lake Maquarie). It was near a bridge. Heaps of prawns and squid. We went out at sunset and fished until 2am. Even caught a shark on a squid. It was my first time prawning so I was like a "fat kid in a candy store." Hope this helps. Let me know if you want/ need more specifics.

  13. Hypothetical speaking, if the drag is usually located in the spool, and if you are looking:

    1) to improve your drag,

    2) water sealed drag,

    3) other reason

Why can't you just change a spool from a Stella and put it on a Sustain or Sienna or other Shimano reels? Or other branded reels?

    Would it not work?

What are you paying for in the reel? (the main body or mostly spool?)
