  1. Honestly I thought there was a rule made by fisheries that if you did catch a carp it was to be killed and disposed and not returned to the water it was caught in because its a pest. Or is it not a rule just common sence to get rid of pests to help save our native marine species?

Perfectly legal to release them back where they are caught as explained here

    http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/pests-diseases/freshwater-pests/species/carp/groups/recreational-fishers

The truth is recreational fishing makes little if any impact on carp numbers. It has taken 10 years or something to clear 2 lakes in Tassie using netting electrocution and numerous other methods. Anyone who thinks recreational fisherman catching and killing a couple here and there will actually make a difference to their numbers is kidding themselves.

  2. Just remember that it is illegal to collect any bait from intertidal areas in Sydney Harbour.

    This copied from DPI site..

    Intertidal protected areas

Intertidal protected areas (IPAs) protect intertidal

biodiversity and provide reservoirs of breeding stock to

repopulate nearby exploited areas. They are located at

Bungan Head, Mona Vale Headland, Dee Why

Headland and Shelly Beach Headland (Figures 6 to 9).

The entire shoreline of Sydney Harbour and its

tributaries, including the Parramatta and Lane Cove

Rivers and Middle Harbour, is also an IPA, excluding the

shoreline of North Harbour from Manly Point to the

southern end of Forty Baskets Beach (Figure 2).

All IPAs extend from the mean high water mark to 10 m

seaward from the mean low water mark.

Collecting seashore animals is prohibited in IPAs. This

includes crabs, snails, worms, cunjevoi, octopus, sea

urchins, anemones, pipis, cockles, mussels, oysters and

saltwater pink nippers (yabbies). Line fishing is allowed

in IPAs but you must bring your own bait.

  3. Definately bass on the freshwater side as well as silver perch. I've got bass around dawn and dusk in summer by casting around the lily pads with small surface lures. Haven't tried in winter but was catching them last summer. I even saw a bream caught in the freshwater side of the weir so the fish ladders they have installed to let the bass breed are obviously allowing fish to move around.

  4. and you didn't put one out live for a jewie because??

Probably because there is a minimum size limit of 30cm for tailor and judging by the post they where smaller than that. I'm sure that everyone saying to chuck one out as bait is talking about ones that are over 30cm though :074:

But yeah if you get a legal one chuck it out there, i've even got jewies on just the heads.

  5. Nice work  I've been trying to make at least 1 a week but larger stick baits and poppers for the kingies in summer.

Are you doing a through wire construction or just screwing in eyelets for hook attachment? and what are you sealing them with.

  6. Do you mean Palm beach on the northern beaches??? because that is Pittwater on the other side which is not exactly a lake LOL. You can get some nice flatties there and if you are lucky you can get salmon, tailor and even kingies chasing bait into the shallows within casting range. I'd take some metal lures like raiders to get some extra distance in case there are bust ups a bit further out. But i'd concentrate on the flatties and be prepared for what ever else shows up.

  7. Mate thats pretty much impossible to answer without knowing at the very least what type of fish you want to catch. Your best bet would be to look through old reports and see where people have been getting the fish you want to catch, you'll then be able to see what bait they've been using etc. Also if you post questions like this in the "fishing chat" section you'll most likely get more answers than posting in the area thats meant for "reports"

  8. Mate that sucks lucky you didn't take anyone out.

As a someone who doesn't own a boat i'm curious as to why you wouldn't have it strapped to the trailer? Surely it's common sense to tie it down rather than relying on that single point of contact, or am I way off track on this?

  9. Hey guys I'm looking at buying a sambo rod and reel the specifications on them are really good as I have been taking a close look at the 10000 reels they have available it is an online shop store they sell them cheap and what I wanted to know is does anyone out there have one of their own and use them on their fishing trips please if you do let me know how you find them or if they have ever let you down? I do alot of cliff fishing around watsons bay and pull up 70 - 110 cm kingies from a 20 metre drop now if you know well about these reels and rods please let me know if you think it's capable to do the job otherwise I'll just spend my money else where I'm budgeting the most $250.00 on the rod and reel together. Looking forward to hearing from you thanks!

All i can say is you get what you pay for.....

would love to see some pics of the 110cm kingie you lifted up the 20mt cliff

  10. The amount of rods only counts if they are rigged up, so you can have 4 rods rigged and ready to go and also have as many others as long as they aren't rigged up with hooks, lures etc.

Perfectly reasonably law as far as i'm concerned especially if it stops people having more than 4 rods in use at any one time.

  11. Why is that the case ? Can you offer some good reasons why Americans embrace overheads?

I'd say it has a lot to do with the fact that there is generally less that can go wrong with them. The reels have less moving parts, no pinion gear for instance, they don't have issues with bail arms getting bent in under load to the point that they drag on the spool, seen this many a time with reels loaded up or overloaded as the case may be, and overheads are generally speaking stronger reels better suited to that type of fishing. Personally I only ever use overheads for livies or spinning off rocks and chucking plastics in harbour for kingies, and i'm still using a Ambassadeur i bought 17 years ago ( upgraded all bearings and drag system). Never let me down and i'd be lucky to get 4 years out of any spin reel, mainly due to my dodgy maintenance schedule.

Let's face it spin reels are just for those who can't cast overheads :074: :074: :074:

  12. BUMP,i sense a bit of jealousy on your part and feel that you were implying that i am a greedy person and thats far from the truth,i was not over the bag limit and do not feel that i have to explain myself to you(you are not a moderator and i have spoken to the moderator on fishraider so wake up to yourself),didnt know you were part of the governing body of the DPI ........

Couple of points, not jealous they are squid when they're on they're on, my comment was in reference to people who are breaking the law as far as bag and possession limits go, if that doesn't apply to you then you aren't one of the greedy people i was referring to. I feel my post was relevant seeing as some people obviously aren't aware of possession limits judging by the other replies in the thread. As for being part of the DPI as far as i'm concerned the more people who are made aware of these laws the better, personally i'm not the type to just ignore people breaking these laws be they bag limits, possession limits or size limits (this is not a reference to you so please don't get offended again) If more people took an active role in informing others maybe there wouldn't be as many people keeping undersized or to many fish..

And Mods i fully understand that this will more than likely be deleted just like any other discussion about fishing regulations seems to be :05:

    Ben

  13. yes i was squidding with a friend so nothing illegal there

Nice work i hope you guys ate them quick or were with more than one friend because the bag limit is also a possession limit to stop greedy people loading up there freezer every night, once you have 20 in your possession even at home that's all you can legally keep.
