  1. Used your lures for the first time last weekend. Only two hits trolling for 4 hours. Both on the Scentblazer string. One nice stripey just off Sydney North FAD and one undersized doll out by the fish traps near the shelf. Credit where credit is due. Order the stuff and it turns up two days later, and usually with some kind of extra. Only wish I could have got out this weekend, but kid's birthday

  2. Took my son and his grandfather visiting from the Uk for a fish this morning

We have a "secret spot" for inshore trolling and were there by 9.15. Eight laps, 6 fish - 5 rats and 1 bonnie. Great fun for the little fellow and even better for his grandfather who'd never caught a fish before the bonnie and kingie he landed today.

After an hour decided if we were having that much luck, we'd try for bigger fish and blasted out to 12 mile reef. Only a couple of boats there and not much on the sounder, but drifted a couple of times with jigs for zip. The small man was feeling rough, so as we still had time figured we'd troll north on the way home.

Lowered the outriggers, dropped a small flouro orange jet head out the back. Turned around to pick a second lure. Started to clip it to the second rod when noticed a decent sized sailfish right behind the small jet head, just bashing it but not biting.

Immediately lobbed the second lure out the other side of the boat to keep it's attention, and went to look for the Joe Yee flouro lure. Had just got it in the water when the second lure got smashed and line started reeling off like mad. Fantastic jumps and pirouettes from the fish as it set a course for Browns with afterburners lit. Pandemonium on the boat as we shipped the lines and got ready to chase. With the fish having taken about 500 yrds of line, and continuing to skate across the surface it then spat the hook. Everyone disappointed but not a bad start to grandad's and the young fella's game fishing experience.

Trolled over the ground again for nought.

Then blasted by to Sydney and halfway back ran into a massive school of dolphins that raced and played with the boat for about 15 minutes.

Couldn't have been better if we'd tried (bar landing the marlin).

Beautiful day and the fish putting on a special event for allyahoo.gif

  3. Spent 6 hrs trolling Browns, 5nm east and then south. Nothing but a decent size bonita landed. Couple of hits on the small shot-gun but nothing on the bigger lures

    Phone didn't ring tho'

Any clues how far beyond Browns the fins caught where taken ?

  4. It's my first season fishing Sydney and went for a troll around the Botany Bay 16 FAD early Saturday. Nothing at the FAD so headed off NE towards the shelf. About 1/2 way there the long corner goes tearing off. 5 mins later the attached bull dolly comes on board. It measured up north of 1.2 m (bigger than my 7 yr old).

Had targeted three species this season - 1 down.

Now hopefully onto YFT and kingfish.

On the former haven't seen any discernible bird activity at all over the last few weeks and have been out over Browns and further north, so if anyone's got any advice that would be appreciated.

On the latter keep reading the other raiders reports with envy -- hopefully it'll come.

Anyway, dolly fillets for the next month.

  5. Some of the other Raiders were kind enough to help me with the same issue some months ago. Try off Shark Island, following the line of the effluent pipes to where the weed and sand meet. Use a handline with Sabiki hooks. Minimal bait. Throw plenty of burley and bait the hooks with pilchard / chicken thigh / etc. Works every time early in the morning. Much tougher in the full light of day. If you see a blue boat with outriggers please move over and give me some room. Good luck

  6. G'day mate, when I fished for live bung at Rose Bay we caught them on the North side of shark island (boat) and in front of the drain that comes into the bay from the golf course.(land based) The best method I have found is to berly them up with bread crumbs and then use Sabiki rigs. Size no 4 & 6. You will catch up to 3 or 4 at a time when their in a feeding frenzy. Don't over do the bread crumbs as you don't want to fill them you only want them to stick around to see whats on offering. If you find that they are not biting the Sabiki enought try putting a little tuna oil on the hooks or a pin head size piece of prawn on every second hook. Make sure you use a light hand line and not a rod or you will not feel them and you will more likely than not pull the hooks out of their soft mouths. The trick is to pull your line in with a constant steady pressure letting the line fall at your feet, then simply hold them over your bucket and give them a shake and they will drop into your bucket. It's important not to handle them until you are ready to pin them onto your rig. When putting them onto the rig use a damp soft cloth to minimise any damage to the fish. Not handling bait fish with your bare hands will increase their usefulness 100%.

    Regards Jeff

Very many thanks guys. Will give all the advice a shot tomorrow morning wp!
