  1. Good ramp out at Port which gets plenty of use. Maritime office is right next door just inacse you need anything while you are there.

used this ramp a year or so ago, good ramp and very protected. when i went i was told to sign in at VMR fyi.

    cheers,

    Dan

  2. Hey Brettmann,

I had the same issue, (tight budget, didn't want holes). I resolved by modifying a bilge pump and using my second drain hole ( assuming you have one) as an inlet. Saved a bit and works well. Holes in hull have never set well with me.. ( I know some are ok)...

    Cheers,

  3. Hey all hope all is well

im only new to this but i have been reading a fair bit and the forum looks unreal

i just wanted to ask and know what would be the best style of rig for a king fish, sinker size, hook size, line strength and best knot.

the reason i ask is for some reason everytime i hook on a kingy i seem to never be able to bring it up fight with it for probably 2 minutes and bang gone :( if i can get a few tips that would be great. Final question also is two hooks better than single or would just a single hook do for those big ones

    thanks guys

mate my rig changes depending on a few conditions. bottom structure, school size, strategy (troll, lure, bait etc) current etc etc can have an impact but i personally like to keep it as simple as possible. have caught a few go size kings on 4lb bream rods. gear condition and set up is another issue you may wanna have a look at (drag setting etc) lost a few good kings on cracked rod tips.

    Cheers

  4. Dandre,

How did you save 10K by buying from QLD? please tell.

Whats the tactic to get a good deal?

    Wrongbait,

no real tactic mate, just compared prices from NSW, VIC and QLD on the usual online sites. compared apples with apples and worked out there was a substancial savings which could be made as long as you are will to wait a little bit longer. with flight prices being fairly low i made a few trips up north to see progress and quality of product and it was definately worth it. in saying that, several other boats (NEW) i was looking at where better value here in NSW. mate go online and compare the exact same boat/package, their prices and locations and you will quickly see a trend.

    cheers mate

  5. Afternoon Raiders,

Just wondering if anyone alse has had issues with Penn rod tips. i decided to branch out and give Penn a go buying a set of short rod combos about 6 months ago. have only been using them for the last 2 months or so but while trolling offshore around the 5 islands both rigs got smashed and after a few seconds of being set the both braid lines were clean cut:mad3: . i checked the rod tips to find they both were spintered. haven't had this problem within 2 months of buy a rod before..

Looks like it is stacking up towards the Formosa. Did u get the classic or tomahawk?

Trailers with rollers would make it easy to launch? Is that what u r alluding to?

    Wrongbait

mate i decided on the classic, dual axle trailer with rollers. Based on ride, user ease and overall feel i personally went the Formosa over the Quin or stessl. the only major mod i am thinking of making with the Formosa is weight ( maybe small balasts or something adjustable) to lower the centre of gravity . it seems to ride better and roll less at anchor with a add on weight greater than 3-4 adults. the quins and stessl boats are great but i found the Formosa the better choice for me, but again there is a notable price difference.

  7. Hey Trung

Love reading your posts and your successes in the Bay. Well done  I fish the Bay reasonably regularly but I need to get onto live bait like you. Draging around dead pillies just doesn't help me in my kingie endeavours.

    Cheers

    Peter

    Hey Peter,

mate was doing the same thing until a year ago. i would def suggest go livies mate, cheap and easy to get the set up started ($60-$70) and the payoff is great. ive been hitting botany almost every weekend for the past couple of months now always better results with livies. the runs of the king is unforgettable. Simular to Trung went out on sunday caught about a dozen undersize rats one keeper 67cm and half a dozen 30cm ish bream.

  8. Been researching boats and after some opinions. Want a tough stable and hard wearing boat, for venturing mostly inside and Occasionally outside the heads in a runabout configuration.

Would a 4.8 or 5.1 length do the job?

Are plates better than press? Last longer and stronger?

    In the press corner,

Quintrex or stacer? specs pretty much the same say in a 5 metre range..

Quintrex looks fatter at the bow. Stacer has thicker side sheets.

    In the Plate corner.

Been looking at Formosa, TABs, Stessl

Which is better? built quality handlign ride and longevity?

Is it true that after 2006 , it is mandatory that all boats have level floation or a seal hull?

    Thanks for reading

mate i went through the same process looking for a alum boat, after a few months reviewing and test riding the Quins, Stessl and Formosa, i decided on a formosa 580 with a 130 etec. i found geting the boat off/on at the ramp is surprisingly easy (can do one person) compared to the the other two we trialled (but this has alot to do with the trailer and set up). in regards to chop and swell it also seemed to out handle the Quin and Stessl still had the typical slapping of a alum but less than the other two. at rest all three seemed to be matched for body roll. the formosa hits the pocket a little harder than the other two. I saved about 10K though geting the boat in QLD and transporting it down. have had the Formosa now for just under a year and cant fault it.

theres a fairly decent magazine out at the moment with reviews alum boats (cant remember the name) pos/negs etc which i used as a guide, i think its published each year.

    Good Luck

    cheers

  9. My mate bought himself a downrigger for xmas and has been giving it a work out during his holidays. It was a slow start getting used to using it but we got a few baits taken and one rat on the first go out.

Since then he has been heading out every day possible and has done better each time, upping his PB to 95cm.

Then last week i get a picture message on my phone with the latest update and a new PB

    Here it is

    post-1613-013201500 1296362841_thumb.jpg

130cm and 18kg caught in 30m of water over an offshore reef out of South coast NSW

Time on the water definitely pays off :)

nice work mate:1yikes: cant wait to catch something of that size. went around the gong offshore yesterday and caught a few 60cm rats on 4lb bream rods. bloody awesome fighting fish on light gear.

  10. mate a few of the boat makers user coloured and/or soapy water filled inside the boat (while dry on trailer), then look for colour and/or bubbles outside of the boat.

    cheers

  11. Hi Guys,

I went to Browns for the first time last weekend and everything was great with my boat with the exception of my sounder.

It stopped solidly reading the bottom in either 200 or 50Hz mode after 350m or so.

Is this normal - or is there a setting that i have overlooked.

I think i had it in auto mode set up for deep water.

The sounder works great until i went over the shelf.

Its not the end of the world - but if i can read bottom up to Browns etc i would be good. The funny thing is it would pick it up randomly every 5 mins or so and produce readings then die again.

Any help from someone with a HDS would be great.

    Thanks,

    Josh

mate, ive a HDS5 unit, been to browns etc a few time with no probs. maybe a stupid question but has the transducer been installed correctly, wiring etc..?

  12. Hi All

    I have a bow-rider and I am thinking of:

Make a hole in the floor of the bow and screw on a vertical 90 degrees rod holder.

Then it would be possible to put a umbrella in there or a little Bow Table (with maybe some rail drink holders.)

Making it a lovely place to have a lunch break.

    What do you think?

Do you think making a hole in the bow floor is ok? Any recommendation?

Do you thing screwing the rod holder to the floor will give it enough stability?

Do I have to reinforce the floor? Anything else I have to watch out for?

    Any comment are highly appreciated.

And NO, i would not go full throttle while the umbrella is still in, or even worse, open !!! :tease:

    Hey mate,

any progress on your project. thinking of doing something simular.

    Dan
