    Hi people,

Went spinning today off Bare Island Botany Bay,didn't catch anything but I saw a few 1 meter King Fish crashing through the surface around the bombora, too far out for me,any boaties might be interested, was about 9am on the run in tide,3 hours before high tide.

    Awesome,

Cant wait till the weather clears up to try to catch some hoodlums.

Went out last week but Swell was large.

Yeah I've only managed 2 legal ones and about 20 rats this summer on mostly live squid, always good to get some advice,

Absolutley right. The ratio of rats to legal is so high. While there are big kings in botany they are so hard to find.

around 1 month ago i spent the whole day at caltex terminal for not a nibble and out of now where this one hits my 3-6kg rod.IMG-20170105-WA0021.jpgBut Im gonna start my focus at out at sydney heads just need to get a good swell that comes on a weekend. Some friends are getting hoodlums out there.

    Hi Guys,

I can confirm the 4m shark at the same spot as your photos last Friday 17th Feb at 12 noon.

Put out a juicy 30 cm mackerel unweighted on a large hook with 1m wire trace. In the mean time pulled in a Kingy on the other rod, 3 minutes later I hear the ZZZZZZZ, pick up the small TLD overhead and then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ 100 m of line peals off. Changed to maximum drag and it slowed him a little, real too small for this beast. Then the line went slack, waited a few seconds and started to real it in. He must have swam towards me and cut the main mono 40 kg line cleaner than any surgeons knife.

Yes he is out there, and has a No.6 hook and 1m wire trace hanging from his mouth.

Too many things against me,  anchored, only me on the boat and had other lines out.

    What a experience!

Wow you had a crazy day.  That would be a awesome fight with that beast. The dates that fish was confirmed in that area so far is from 17feb to 22febuary. Intresting to know if it is gone.

Just curious what you used for bait for the kings and remora?

Thats one of the biggest blue swimmers I've ever seen, must of gone down well! Well done mate

I find Fresh Squid strips the best. They have been doing the most damage. The Remora was on squid. I caught one years back also on squid at the caltex terminal. If The kings are active pilchard cubes work good as well.

Ive also caught kings with solf plastics at botany with just leaving it in rod holder, bounces it self on bottom.

Either that kingfish is undersized, or that crab is a world record.

:) he was a very large large crab. Just to give u an idea that tailor in the photo was 42cm. photo does not give justice to how big this crab was or the fish actually were. Its the only crab i have ever caught of a boat. Hook tangled and got caught on the claw.  The Kingfish was slightly over 65cm and after being bent after hardness in esky when i took that photo.  The crab claw span was over 45cm. Ill be dam happy if that is a record in Sydney.

Started fishing fishing at botany at 8am today. It was windy and not the best of conditions, but glad there was no rain.

Did not see the shark or had any fish destroyed, but I did catch its buddy the Remora which is usually around the shark. Awesome fish. My son wanted to eat it.

He likes to try all fish but i explained that its better to let this beautiful fish go. Just before throwing the fish back he wanted to try its suction head on the Esky.

I couldn't believe how strong it was. I could not remove the fish it was stuck. I had to put water on top of it and slide down the side of the esky for it to come off.

    What a amazing fish.

Beside that we had a mixed bag.

Also had another rat king thrown back. The blue swimmer crab was big.

We were 2 of them haha, should've come around to say hi! The other two head off to the drum mid morning when it got quiet.

Our morning was an interesting one.

Upon arrival at moli, someone was hooked up to a shark which took his rat, the shark proceeded to tow him out of the bay LOL. I hooked up to a 42cm trevally, which was kept. Both of us then got onto rat kings up to 62cm and whilst another tinnie brought up another rat, it was circled by another shark.

We proceeded to the drums and saw some huge ass seals, went for one drift then had to perform a rescue mission which lasted the next two hours... That was uh to say the least an interesting morning.

And you guys are brave coming out in kayaks

Wow the shark was still there yesterday. It is getting a good feed on kingfish :)

Glad the seals are hanging out at the drums. They have sensed the danger. I hope they stay there until the shark has completely gone. Will be sad to see them killed.

  9. Friends went to same fishing location this morning where the seals hang out and have told me shark is still there today.

    Another king has been demolished.

I hope those resident seals are okay. The shark I saw yesterday looked like a bronze whaler i could be wrong but it looked different than the one i just read about spotted at Brighton le sands and much larger.

  10. Crazy day at Botany Bay.

Headed out around 7.30 am this morning to get as much fishing time before a possible storm.

Son hooked the first king and after a minute in the fight the line went light.

I said to him better luck next time. As he was taking out his line we found the Kingfish head still on. I was thinking wow a small shark got him. This has never had happened to us ever while fishing in inshore or even offshore. Only ever seen this happen on video clips on Youtube.  We hooked on plenty of rat kings during the day and just before we were packing up I hooked on a decent Kingy, during the fight got him close to the boat and it went for another run. It was definitely legal seeing its size in water compared to the others, after finally tiring him and getting it close to the net, the craziest thing Ive experienced in fishing happened a 4m+ shark came up to the surface and and bit him in half. It was one scary shark. The bastard took my most promising legal fish.

I know a lot of divers go to that area and kayak fisher man. This was crazy I was thinking of buying a kayak for that area when I'm alone fishing. Not after what we witnessed today.

Photo of my dad holding my chopped up Kingfish. The good news is that I took the fish or whats left of it to home and it will be our dinner.

  11. Took family and parents to Nelson bay on weekend for Fishing.

On arrival at midday Saturday there was a school of Kingfish swimming around Breakwall and Marina.

Nice site in clear water. They took off pretty quickly. Around 20 mins later gave rod to my mother and went to fill the water with bucket when I can hear my son screaming Kingfish.

My mother had a nice fight with the fish and we ran in at the last seconds when it was around the pylons to help pulling it out. Just shy of legal, It went back in.

But my mother enjoyed the fight and a good start. That was it for the most of the day until  around 6pm saw some nice Trevally in the water which very large. My son hooked one on light gear and within seconds had line busted on pylons. Went for the second try and this time i opened reel to lure him away from pylons to open water which did work. But the fish had speed and power which was unstoppable. fish he ran towards the rescue marine boat with tightest drag i can go for 8lb i couldn't not tire him and it was over.

Tried heavier gear but no takes. That was the only action we had for 2 days. You need to wait a very long time in between for some action. Fish are well fed and are snobby  :) in the area.

  12. They are incredibly powerful rods.
There is a video on you tube of pe 1-3 rod lifting 15kg of dumb bells.

They can be used for bait. Especially bottom bashing.

The only complain i have is the top guide is to small when connecting braid too leader directly and the knot gets stuck.

  13. G'day raiders,

It's been a while since my last post, but I have been reading with interest all of your travels and catches. With the warmer weather, here's hoping to tight lines for us all!

With the day off work (thanks public holiday) and no kids social activities to contend with, I headed down to what is quickly becoming my new favourite spot on the George's. Now, to be honest, I almost called it quits while I lay in my nice warm bed and thought about rolling over and getting some much needed sleep. Given the weather outside, it sure was tempting.

Anyway, in between contending with the wind, I ended up bagging a total of 16 bream. Most of them were undersized, but a few were almost legal and put up a great fight on my light gear. This session easily outstripped the most in a session and I was stoked.

In the between the bream-a-thon, I hooked up on something which was definitely not a bream...and lost all 3 times.

The first time, there was no tap-tap-tap, just a whole swallow and run. This lasted all of 10 seconds before my hook came undone...dammit!!!!. The second time, same thing (swallow and run) and after a little bit of a fight either my leader (8 pound mono) broke, was chewed or I got run over a snag.

The 3rd time, it was like the mystery fish was sucking on the bait. Anyway, I've hooked it and did my best to let the fish run when it wanted, but kept the pressure applied. This time, I manged to get it about 10 feet away and was eagerly looking forward to seeing what it was and then....gone! Same thing happened with the line as #2.

So, I'm thinking up upgrading to a bigger leader (maybe 10-12 pound) and would appreciate anyone's thoughts. I'm just worried this might be off-putting to the bream which are the usual fare on such trips.

    Thanks for reading.

    Cheers

    Hodgo

    Good Report.

The mystery fish I believe is a EEL. I had same thing happen to me in Georges river. They don't give up and stay around for a while. I had around 3 bust offs as well. When i upgraded leader to around 14lb i managed to get him in around 80cm.

  14. Palms metal witch rods and Yamaga galahad have awesome rods.

Good reels would be (Catalina 4000 430g), (Saragosa 6000 430grams) , or even the new (Daiwa Certate 4000 HD 405grams) but not sure when it will be released.

If you need lighter reel have a look at the biomaster 5000fb and upgrade the handle with the stradic 5000 one to get the egg knob for jigging.
