  1. Hey Raiders.... well a but disappointed today to say the least. We went out Saturday afternoon (later then we wanted due to kids party) and set about catching a heap of live bait and preparing ourselves for a great afternoon/next day fishing.

Caught a 41cm whiting at 9pm and a few small snapper which all went back in.

Slept on the boat and woke at 4am and headed out to Browns.... and thats when it all went bad. The sun peaked out for a whole half an hour only to reveal big messy rolling swell and not the Summery less than 1 mtr seas we were expecting. We didnt go out that far then and stayed in 150-200mtrs of water which we endured for probably 6 hours too long. Came in for a bottom bash in 100mtrs of water on a reef and lost too much gear to the nastiest jackets ever. Trolled again caught a brown bird in one of our lines - bought it in to free it and it bit me :ranting2: . Bottom bashed again and after we got sick (literally) we headed in to try one of our favourite fishing spots. Nothing there so we decided to move - lost the anchor and then couldnt stay in one spot for more than 5 minutes cause of the stupid wind and swell.

So after a long 12 hours out we caught a maori wrasse and a brown bird. Definately not what we were hoping for. Bloody weather :1badmood: . So looking forward to a nice day out.... oh well thats boating/fishing for you i suppose....

  2. Hello Mrs Swordfishermiss,

Is there any where that we can see the current Fish raider records?

Just curious to see how close to the mark i may have been (but didnt put on measure board doh!!)

Love the site and commend you on your obvious patience as i can imagine you deal with more than your fair share of Sooks.

  3. We thought we would brave the early morning wind on Thursday and planned to go to Long Reef.

Balmoral by 6.30am for yakkas ... plenty of pinkies, trevally and sweep but no yakkas at all ... must have been cleaned out over chrissy.

Headed off to Dobroyd and found a school of fish on the sounder which turned out to be yakkas ... we got about a dozen, with a couple of horses, and a small flathead and a box puffer. Saw some surface action and after throwing dozens of casts with SPs and plenty of grabs finally hooked up to a 30cm tailor.

Time to poke our nose out the heads. It was pretty messy so we slow trolled towards Manly, waved at 3 rockhoppers having fun on North Head. By Manly we thought may as well give it a go and headed slowly to Long Reef. Again saw some surface action but didn't get any takes on SPs or lures, so we continued north. It was still a bit messy when we got there and there were a few yaks in the water but no other boats. Set up for a drift just north of the ledge with the wind taking us towards the beach. Burley bucket over the side just a foot down, 2 live baits under the boat and squid strips on light gear out the back. The wind started to drop off and the swell flattened a bit. The drift was quiet initially but after about 15 minutes we were getting some interest on the squid strips, ended up being a school of solid sweep, a bit of fun but not dinner. Then the kingies started hitting.

Over 8 or 10 drifts we would have landed about 25 kingies, most 55 - 62cm plus a few 40cm. The squid strips out fished the live bait 2 to 1 at least! At one stage we had a triple hook up with 2 on squid strips and 1 taking a live bait - now that was chaotic with fish swimming all over the place, crossed lines and the burley bucket getting in on the act but we managed to land (and release) all three. We did lose a few on the live bait with a bust off and a pulled hook ... maybe they were a decent size!

During the drifts we also caught more sweep than we could count plus a 45cm samson fish (first time, and it fried up very nicely as fillets - photo attached) and a 35cm pinkie. We also saw a shark, large sea turtle and penguin doing its stuff.

The dive boat turned up and a few other boats came out later but it was pretty quiet out there - early weather must have scared everyone off or you are all back at work!!

Overall a great couple of hours giving the gear a solid work out and us plenty of exercise. Luckily the forecast was right and the weather calmed down mid morning.

Nice day out! We are heading out tomorrow so i hope that some of their friends hang around!!

  4. Hey Raiders -

Went out this morning with my good mate with the goal to bag some jews/kings/flatties in botany bay....

Did an early started and tossed some frozen squid along the bridge pylons and manager 3 jews within 20 minutes! This is only our second attempt at targetting these buggers and it seems they are not all that mystical after all! Haven't caught any monsters yet but will be putting some time in over the next few months in an effort to get a 10kg+ unit :biggrin2:

We also managed to pull in a decent dinner sized flatty while jew bagging so into the icebox that went also..

Come 7am and with no sleep at all, the body was feeling war torn already so when we arrived at the squid grounds no effort was put into jigging the squid.. result? DONUT! Was kinda expecting this with the amount of effort we put in! Too busy eating and sleeping!

Went to find some Kings at the usual places but none to be found.. either they were not there or once again it could have been our lazy fishing style... :biggrin2:

this is how we normally fish

    post-10545-041398900 1320476118_thumb.jpg

Anyway, went to get some flatties on plastics with me once again putting no effort in until my mate Tom hooks up to something solid and dropping it in the process :1prop: ... knowing there was fish on the chew an instant burst of energy equivilent to 5 cans of RedBull hit my system.

Grabbed my go to combo... SLAMbait minnow in pink, 1/6th jig head, 5lb line with 6lb fluro leader running off a stella 1000/luvis combo. First cast and i hit this beauty on the head!

    post-10545-085521000 1320476089_thumb.jpg

The fish put up a great fight and gave my little 1000 reel as workout. Luck for me, my mate was able to net the girl on the first go because she spat out my striaghted hook a few seconds afterwards..

How big was the fish ?

    post-10545-049225500 1320476100_thumb.jpg

As long as my leg! :yahoo:

After a few photos she was release and swam away without a care.

What is a mortal sin of fishing? taking a photo with someone else's fish! Here is Tom WITH MY FISH!

    post-10545-039056600 1320476137_thumb.jpg

At 86cm , this is my equal PB flatty on plastics but my biggest one coming from the Bay. Have caught countless ones in the 70-80cm range so was very very happy with this fish!

    Till next week!

    Cheers

    Trung / DHYPE!

Nice work - that is one massive fish....!! Excellent to see that you put her back too!!

  5. With all the hype of Snapper over the past few months, a few weeks ago I thought I would give it a crack down south. The Coutas caused a lot of grief biting off hooks and making it difficult to get a bait past the buggers.

I took my younger brother and we managed 5 nice size pannies for the table. It was a very different style of fishing to what I experienced in SA (where the snapper were also a hell of a lot bigger!!!) but we are now a little wiser and it was good to score on the first attempt. Many thanks to squidboy who guided me in the right direction.

    post-6215-099675300 1318682684_thumb.jpg

Fished middle harbour today amongst various moored boats downrigging yakkas. Scored a few kings, the biggest going a couple of mm over 100cm. After a measure and a few quick snaps, all fish were released to make more kings and grow a bit bigger

    post-6215-066357900 1318682695_thumb.jpg

Nice catch! Spewing we couldnt get out on the water yesterday...best weather in weeks.. hope that Kingy has a lot of friends out there! Well done putting him back too.....

  6. It takes a strong man to admit me has issues and i feel i am that strong man.

So it all starts with my mate Gibley. I have taken him to a few of my local haunts and while we have fished together we have managed to catch....... well stuff all to be honest. He then goes back to these spots and like a kid at a sleepover who doesn't want to share, goes and catches loads without me.

For example. One afternoon/evening we decided to do a spot of fishing from the rocks then move to my secret spot in the Bondi region. I am not able to let this secret spot slip as it is well it's Bondi beach ohhh dammit. Yea so anyway we fish this killer gutter for hours with zero joy and decide to move south to hit the rocky area that also doubles for a heavy petting area for the coasts population of horny backpackers beyond about 12am. While fishing there we catch.......... a bream about the size of my hand (I am no giant for those thinking whoa how big is his hand though)and a stingray about the size of my foot (again don't get exited). After this session we got a little tired and Gibley had to get himself on the bus/train/bus home (chin up Gibers). However we decided to go check out the gutter we were once fishing as there was now some new "guru" fishing it.

To my half shock, half horror, half joy I was 1 and a half times more exited than i thought was possible in seeing that this giant of a man had landed 3 salmon and had been fishing for only 1 hour. SOoooooooooooooo i drilled him with every question under the sun and we left lessons learnt.

Well good old Gibley set out about a week or so later to try his luck and as im sure some of you will have read he nailed it with a 73cm salmon, 65cm tailor and a banjo shark 4 feet long that is now a raiders record. What thanks did i get for putting him on this magical secret spot? a text rubbing it in and a post the following day that would have made the Queen cuss. By the way Gibley how is the motherland? cold? wet? smashed up by rioters? hope your having fun!

Soooooo this brings me back to my underlying message here........ my issue. You see i fish many many hours and i try to fish around the turning of tides with moon fazes and the likes but i seem to just be on this crazy crap fish spell. Raiders i wish i could say i am new to this great sport of angling but i am afraid that i am not. I am 27 years of age and got started when i was 2. The name C,./ used to send a shiver down the spines of most fish species and many a seasoned QLD fisherman would wisper our name (i am a coward so therefore will not disclose my name through fear of my dad disowning me through fishing defeats of late).

I am new in the sense that these waters are new to me and i will always maintain that there is always something to learn while we fish. However i feel i should be nailing it a bit better than i am. Well at this stage i have no nails just a hammer.

So it is about time i hit the double figure fish trip and hit a solid session. Hell i need it. If not then i fear that the bearded guy wearing flannel, sitting on the corner sipping milk and having it run through his beard while asking for spare change might be me through fishing madness!!!

Attached is a photo of my 1 blackfish from Sunday. For those of you wondering and i know there must be thousands, my shoe size is large and the thong is exactly 30cm long so the fish is of decent size. It is the lone suicidal fish of Bondi. RIP

My ramblings have been long but this has been built up.

So enjoy and laugh it up for i will be back with magnificent tales from the coast shortly.

    Ramblings over.

    Cobba

ps. I went fishing again today. A massive prze goes to the person who can guess how many fish i caught.

Great read - and im glad to see other people have runs of bad luck too - sorry mate :( Just keep getting out there and as your good times will come!

While talking about these Raider fish records - how do we go about getting them and sticking them on the bottom of our posts etc? My missus has nailed some big fish lately (all of which were returned safely to the sea) I on the other hand am on a run similar to youself!! lol

She caught a 9 kilo Wobbegong and a 12 kilo Port Jackson shark two weeks ago.... where do we find the record list to compare these catches??

Anywayz good luck mate - see you out there

  7. Hi everyone ,

Well managed to fish on page one and it was its maiden trip to Browns , fished the bottom and bagged out on gemmies and one blueye for our troubles and off in search of some yellowfin , it was only the second time the boat had fished for yellowfin and luckly it still has a perfect record for the season , could have been a little better but got pestered by sharks and managed one lone ranger yft . Well done on the rod work reece.

    Reece tuna

cheers Dogtooth ..... :1fishing1: John.....

Nice work!! Was that Saturday just been? The water was like glass and it was a perfect day out. We trolled past Browns heading East and we saw some guys hold up a nice Tuna as we went past... shame we could raise one ourselves!

Well done - we are muchly jealous!!

  8. Heard rumours the Southern Blue Fin were on at Bermi last week so made a quick and risky decision to drive down to what all the fuss was about.

Trolled from shelf to continental drop off for about 4 hours and didn't turn a reel. Then came back in close the the shelf. Not one run! Was about to pack it in when I thought stuff it lets cube. Not a boat in site but heard boats were hooked up north of us.

20 minutes into the cube the 24kg goes off and we are AWAY! 10 minutes an we deck a 45kg specimen. My mate lobs a pillie out and he is away. 35 kg fish. I grab the Saltist and lob out a big popper and 2 winds on the reel and i'm away. Another 35kg fish. Mate hooks another about 30kg which we release. There are barrell size tuna all around the boat. Every cube that went in would go down 2-3 meters and bang fish would hammer it. Had the fish around the boat for over an hour and no other boat in sight.

Got 2 more 35kg fish on poppers. You have never seen anything until you see these fish hit the poppers with a massive explosion! Next fish on popper and the grip handle on the Saltist pops off. Screw loosened. Everytime I loaded up the grip would pop off. Any way after a struggle we managed to land and release the fish.

We scored 3 or 4 on poppers landed/released, dropped a couple more from tackle failure and caught about another 8 or 9 on pillie. Kept four and released the others. Biggest went 45kg smallest 28kg.

Probably the best fishing I have ever had.

Nice work - mega jealous!! Hope to get out ourselves and experience that kind of fishing!!

    ps- love the boat name

  9. Hey Raiders - on one of our first trips to Browns we stopped and did a bit of bottom fishing and caught a few of these big leatherjackets and one very pretty flying gunard thing. A couple of stripe tuna made it an nice little trip out!! Sorry this report is a bit old but since i cant be out fishing :( i thought i would look at fish pics and share them with you!!!

    cheers Sammy

  10. So with the recent spate of awesome weather one could not resist a beach session so off I trapsed down to my fav BB beach around gentlemans hours yesterday.

Armed with fresh mullet and trust ol slimeys I made my way down the track and onto the beach- perfectly timed it was completely empty.

Rigged up and cast out only 1 rod out of 3.

I berleyed then I waited, and waited... and waited... for nearly 4 hours for the first bight

Around 2pm I felt a few timid bites and thought immediately of small Dart then WHAMMO!- Im onto a good fish that went straight for the surface and attempted to barrell roll the hook from its mouth on the biggest wave available I kept tight on him all the way and I finally landed a healthy 67cm Sambo

    post-12300-046625000 1309005598_thumb.jpg

    post-12300-008061100 1309005625_thumb.jpg

After rebaiting out went another lobb into the blue yonder- immediately it was picked up (I must have dropped in on this fish ), cause he took it and went berko- after a few tense moments a 40cm Taylor was washed up.

3rd Cast onto another in a few minutes- but this one went hell for leather Down deep with long runs gave my a great fight the btr6500 was singing then up to the surface for acrobatics. a good 10mins before I took control of a 70cm whopper Sambo! As he put up such a good fight I let him live for another day. What an awesome feeling to watch this beast swim away amongst the foamy whitewater with a big swirl :yahoo:

    post-12300-021333900 1309005649_thumb.jpg

After this it was a cast per hookup and I landed another 10 Sambo's ranging from 55-65cm till I ran out of bait all released except 2 Sambo's and the Taylor (courtesy of the fish stealing vermin seagulls that took 1/2 my Mullet and quite a few strips of my slimeys GGGGGRRRRRRRR!!!!

After getting my arns stretched constantly for 2 hours I trekked back to the car very contented with an awesome Sambo session all on bait..... :1fishing1:

Here's a coupla piccies of the 67cm and 70cm Sambo's as I dodnt bother taking piccies of the rest of them- but it was the best beach session ive had in around 10yrs from this particular spot so am stoked :1prop:

    Tight lines

    Anthony

Thats a couple of nice fat Salmon there mate - well done!

  11. hey raiders, thought i would put a few pics up of me and my girlfriends latest fishing adventures.

we have been out every weekend for the past 6 weeks and battled huge seas and bloody rain....

had been fairly quiet and unrewarding until last weekend. we managed 5 kingfish and one really nice salmon

not to mention probably 20 small snapper, rock cod, wirrah and we think it was a flowery cod, and a few bream, leatheries and a red morwong.

anywayz thought i would share a few pics... this was my girlfriends first kingfish so she was stoked - so stoked she caught 5 to my 0...

we dont eat fish at all so everything was released...

  12. Caught this +65kg model off Sydney on Saturday.

Had them swimming around the boat for over 2 hours, Wouldnt touch anything we threw at them.

Took a few tricks and special rigs to get them biting.

Got busted off by 1 before and missed another hook up untill I hooked this. Took us over 4 hours to get her in the boat.

Could not beleive the power of this fish. I did what it wanted whenever it wanted.

Weighed her in at SGFC, Went 64.7kg after we bled it.

    A day i will never forget !!!!

Nice work - we ventured out to Browns on Saturday but listening to the radio and seeing your catch it looks like we should have gone further out. Top fish!! Well done

  13. Hi guys,

We went out in the Pirtek Fishing Comp... shame about the rain in the arvo but another beautiful day on the water anyway. Caught a couple of Flatheads for the comp.... dont think they will win us any boat but at least we had photos to upload!!

Would love to enter more local fishing comps - does anyone know who or where may have them??

    Cheers,

  14. Gday Raiders ,

Been up Hervey bay since Saturday and wind has been blowing 20knots gusting to 30 all week, raining and overcast!

Havent been able to get the boat out for a fish which is dissapointing but you get that !

this morning finally looking good so up at 430, packed the boat and backed the car in towards the boat.

Only problem its hard to hook your boat up when some %%%%% has stolen your towbar during the night.

for the 10 bucks theyd get for it at a scrap yard its caused us a heap of drama.

Just needed to vent boys and girls as im going to lose it ! hope we can find a replacement and ill post about

    something happier.

Hope everyone else is catching plenty !

    Cheers

    Morgs

Bloody idiots..... well i hope you get yourself sorted soon!

  15. Fished for an hour and a half, south of Jibbon Bombie on Sunday, and caught 15 flatties to 45cm and a nice flounder. There were a few about. Not much wind and a slow drift early in the morning. Took my son out (not a young son any more), I caught 5 flatties, and he caught the rest!

    Yowie.

Well done! We havent caught a Flathead for ages..... was a mad day out yesterday hey! Where abouts is Jibbon Bombie?

  16. Went to DEEP SOUTHERN yestday. As usual yakkas went off. Seen the same guys jigging for rats. Also got my PB 113cm kingfish which went HARD.....looking forward to taking out Slinky on Saturday, unfortunately JH cant go so he cant defend his amber jack record

Fantastic!! Great day fishing..... I caught my first dolly which was almost identical 2 weeks ago so lets hope its a good Summer for Dolphin Fish and they are all 130cm + !!! Well done

  17. Its a Stripe Tuna i been gettin a few lately spinning the rocks down the south coast

    It taste like Chicken

Yeah have to admit - we weren't too sure and after asking a few people settled on a bonito. We have caught striped tuna before and they looked different.... Bonito or Striped tuna we were still bloody happy!!

  18. Haha Scotty, wont disagree there.

I spoke to an "ex" fisheries guy not long ago and I asked why they didn't enforce laws and didn't come down hard on illegal fishing etc, his reply was that their safety was more important than issuing a fine. Some people have no respect for the law and think threats, violence etc is ok and fisheries don't have that much power, maybe they need to be given more powers of arrest etc or make police go with them.

Maybe they should be in bigger numbers..... or maybe they could take down car rego and boat details and inform Police..?? Who knows but there should be a lot more of them... We see people all the time keeping undersized fish and it shits us.... how are we supposed to take our kids fishing and hope they may catch something when the waters being stripped bare..... Im sure the point of fishing (for those who eat fish) is to have a "Fresh Catch"..... how fresh can it be when people exceed their bag limits and take home way too many fish... I reckon half the fish taken home probably get chucked out.... Glad to see so many people on here are supporting the size limits and returning of their catches... best way to conserve our fishing future!
