  1. Ok, so I was bored on Friday arvo, spoke to the old man who was coming back in his cruiser after a couple of days floating round port hacking doing retired blokes with boats do....Sit around and fish!

Thought it would be better than doing nothing so met him at Burraneer Bay, he got off, I got on.... I took the boat out to Jibbon for the night and started catching some yellow tail and putting them in the bucket for bait..

Rigged up my new cheap as shi# game reel that I bought off online shop for $40 with 130m of 30 pound braid... :-rolleyes ...

Threw out a bait after dinner on the cheap reel and watched the unknowing yellowtail swim off in the distance... Sat back down to a beer with the radio going in the background. :icon_peace:

Off went the reel about 20 minutes later and the line was zipping off, I was excited even though I thought it was a ray, I tightened the drag and reefed it's head back in the direction of the boat...lol...(I'm new to using braid and love the strength, it's funny for me as I fish with 6pound trace).. The gears in this new reel are tiny and it takes 10,000 winds to pull in a meter of line, so it took quite a while to get it up to the boat, it's a Banjo.... Was fun bringing it in though, I pulled it onto the marlin board, it was nearly three feet long, took the hook out and let it go again....

Well, for the next three live baits I put out, I think I caught the same blooming Banjo, very annoying... I left the last yellowtail till bedtime and fished for nothing at all on nippers the old man had left me..

It was freezing cold so threw the last yellowtail out and hit the hay....

It was that cold I was having trouble sleeping so got out more doona's and sleeping bags, I rolled myself up like a grub in a cocoon in three doona's and three sleeping bags.... Shivering I finally fell asleep about 1am, I woke at 3am to the line on the cheap reel zipping away, got outta bed and ran for the line...it stopped as I got to it, gave it a pull and it was stuck on something.... It was quite choppy and in my pajamas I stupidly got into the dingy with the rod... I wound the reel which dragged me and the dingy to the mooring block, it's pitch black, freezing cold, choppy and the westerly was blowing.... I leaned over and tried to free it, the 6 foot dinghy did not like this and took on a fair bit of water wetting me a fair bit, I let the drag out and put the rod back on the boat, now I'm pissed  got back on the boat and tied the braid to the boat....got changed and went back to bed.... Woke in the morning and went out in the dinghy to inspect, I used the boat hook and grabbed the other side of the line and started pulling it in by hand, I had about 30 meters in my hands when this fish took off like lightening slicing my fingers in many spots real deep, blood pissing out I was not letting go, I wanted to see what it was... I was determined! I got up closer to it, saw a bit of colour and the thing got off.... I assume it was another Banjo but will never know!

So it was a freezing cold night, I caught absolutely nothing worth writing about , lost $40 dollars of braid....and was lucky enough to see the same fish 4 times...Not

But waking up to such a nice day cooking bacon and eggs was all worth it in the end I guess ( well, so I'll keep telling myself)....

( I'll load some pics later, iPad won't do it)

  2. Great report mate  Congratulations on a successful trip outside! How big was the mako?

The bronze whaler was about 3 meters, I guess, it's definately the closest I've been to a shark while not diving...probably not big for a lot of you offshore fisho's but it was big for a first timer it was over three meters and about 120kg ...

  3. Yesterday I head off from home and arrived at Mikes house round 8.20am.

Within 20 minutes we'd slipped the boat in at Water Street boat ramp and we were off heading for sea, we got out past Jibbon and the water was cool, 19.5 deg, it was lumpy due to the wind overnight, and raining on and off , :1badmood: we stopped about half a mile for a chat with another Raider who turned around and head back, mike asked us if we wanted to keep going and also said it would get better the further we went out and the forecast was for the wind to drop....

He was right, the further we went, the better it got, Mike got all the gear ready and let out the lures.. :1yikes:

We trolled heading along the canyons where we had a double hookup on some 9 kg Albacore.... I was in awe as I always fish inside the Hacking and nothing I've ever dealt with fights like that except for the big stingrays which snap me straight off.... I was laughing and hurting on the inside as I had never used game reels and that was Awkward as the rod and reel keep trying to roll around(I'm sure you game fisho's have seen someone struggle before on one of these) and as I was winding, realized as well as struggling with the rolling rod, I also had to feed the line on....it was a laugh...I wound and wound and saw color but he saw me and took another dive, going deeper again, my adrenalin was pumping... We landed both of these albacore and set the gear and kept going....

We watched for Tuna birds and head for little schools of them and also where the albatross were, that paid off too, we had more hookups and unfortunately I lost mine just below the boat.

We kept trolling heading for Browns, we got out there and had a troll around we we got another Double hookup... This is awesome fun, and I now know why all you offshore fisherman and women are hooked on it!

We stopped and watched another Raider with the last part of his fight with a large bronze whaler! I was glad Mike stopped and let us watch as this was quite interesting for me as I have not seen stuff like this before. After watching the struggle of getting this beast over the gunnels, we tried to assist them, but it was too heavy and the boats were scratching each other (mikes new paint job)ouch :ranting2: ... We dropped mike off to lend a hand and watched from Mikes boat...It took a lot of effort from 3 big guys and about 25 mins to get it over the gunnels...

We threw another' spread and head for home,, we had more hookups on the way home.... Wow, game fishing is awesome....

As we were heading for home we watched the storms over Wollongong and botany, they looked great from sea in the darkness...

A massive thank you to Mike for taking me on my first offshore fishing expedition, I can't tell you how good that was, but it was my best day in 10 long months after suffering a brain haemorage and stroke.....

What an awesome day filled with exciting stuff I have not seen before, the Albacore were epic fun and so was watching the shark catch.

    Thanks heaps Mike

I wrote this on the iPad and it won't let me load photos, I'll load some up soon....Thought I'd add how nice Mike is too, every time a rod went off he was telling the two of us to grab the rods and never pulled in a fish himself, but kept setting the lines for us all day....

  4. I'm not saying that the one in the pics are killer whales but killer whales are found in our waters very commonly, more recently there was a pod of them off the central coast, it was filmed by a charter boat

  5. OK, The Shangri La fijian does have a blackwatch Game boat you can go out on, i was there 3 months ago, i saw it come in with a fair few fish, but was speaking to some other Aussies there and they had been on another charter about an hours drive from the fijian and caught so many fish which they donated to some fijian villages, i saw their photo's and these fish were as large as they guys that caught them, its definately worth looking on the net, ill try have a search on the net and stir my memory( My memory not good at the Moment, I had a brain Haemmorage 3 weeks ago and got out of hosp yesterday).I'll also google earth Fiji because my brain knows where they left from, it'll stir my memory...Also there is a part at the Shangri la where all the pamphlets are for all the charters and tours and that is how they found it...The Shangri la boat had days where they came back empty handed quite a few times...Shangri La is a great place to stay...Awesome. Enjoy

Ps.Take snorkell gear and go round the reef

  6. No good to hear mate, hope you get well and out fishing soon.

Expect an NZ report from me in the coming days ;)

thanks Quintrex101, have a great time in NZ and i look forward to seeing your report mate, Hope you get some monster Snapper.

We had a trip to Phuket paid for in 3 weeks but i cannot go now, but would have loved to have written a post on the fishing there, i'll have to make my Mrs fish while she is over there

  7. Hi all Raiders out there, Keep up the reports and posts as im reading them all and its keeping me sane..Last thursday night i suffered a brain Haemmorhage (Aneurysm) whilst at home, glad it didnt happen on the boat as i would not be here to tell the tale and doubly lucky my wife was so quick on the phone to the ambulance. Im still in hospital and will be for some time, I got transferred 3 times Sutho Hosp->St George->Prince of Wales. I have been told by the doctors that my drivers Licence is now under review and that i'll probably lose it, so my fishing will be from shore when i go with mates and my boat will be patiently waiting in the driveway for me to get my licence back..

Anyway, keep up the posts, reviews, chats, well all of it, im reading

    Regards

  8. Having had a work accident 9 years ago and suffering from severe lead poisoning(mad hatters) i feel the risks are minimal if you wash your hands after you have handled lead sinkers, and it would be the dust that would get into your system, You would have to handle alot of sinkers for this to have any affect on you, Lead wont make you dizzy though and does dissipate out of your system with time but in cases like mine actually soaks into your soft tissues and bone marrow...If you get alot in your system you will actually turn blue grey for quite some time as i did. Inhaling and eating it are the common ways people get affected by lead....
