  1. I was heading home from Manly at about 6pm the other Sunday with my gear in the car, I’ve always wanted to try the Spit Bridge so thought I’d give it a bash.

The tide was coming in fairly fast, so I thought I’d spin minnows and plastics with the current in the hope of a King, Jew or a Flattie. After an hour on the hard bodies I changed to the plastics. This girl jumped on after about 10 casts, I thought I had a Jewie, this thing ran hard and was tearing 6lb braid off my reel at a rapid rate. After a couple more run I had her at my feet, she made me very nervous darting around the rocks, although eventually I led her up the beach.

I grabbed my phone, jumped onto the Fishraidier website to see what the catch of the month item was – Paper!? I don’t have any paper, sh*t! With the fish out of the water I was getting anxious, I wanted a clean release. Rummaging through my bag with absolutely no paper it covered to me my bus pass was made from paper, brilliant!

After a few quick snaps I released the big girl to swim again. When I was re rigging I noticed that my braid had snapped, very thankful that I got her on the beach when I did!

  3. G’day Raiders,

I’ve been reading for a while without contributing, so here’s my bit...

I went out to chasing Flatties the Friday before Good Friday on Sydney Harbour on light gear – 1000 sized reel, 6lb braid, 8lb leader.

I was ready to move on to the next spot when something jumped on and start taking line. He ran to my left, I was close to being spooled so I locked the drag in a desperate attempt to stop him. I won my line back and slightly loosened the drag to avoid it snapping and he made another mad dash to my right. Again I was close to being spooled so locked the drag and turned his head back around. After ten minutes and a few more nervous runs around the rocks and kelp at my feet I landed this fella, took a few snaps and let him on his way.

I’m fairly new to SP fishing but this session has certainly given me the confidence to leave the bait at home...

  4. Brown's Rock is a beautiful place that has been ruined by incosiderate people. I've recently moved nearby, thought I'd give it a go and will never go back. Block Pilchard packets, discarded food packets and general crap everywhere. It's a disgrace the way the place has been treated.
