  1. I have been abit unproductive lately due to university and other commitments, but after some convincing (more like hassling) from my mate, I decided to head out and enjoy a night of squidding.

It started off with both of us scoring two squid each the size of our 2.5g jigs with in 10 minutes. and as the tide was rolling in the productivity increased.

I then got the first decent hit which is the squid you see on the bottom right of the photo, which my mate was already steaming that I got a fairly large green eye. About 10 minutes after then he then hooked up to the one you see on the bottom middle. My mate fishes very light gear, which includes a daiwa steez 1000 and a custom built rod with 6lb line and 6 lb leader. This green eye he hooked up onto had abit of go in him, but we managed to net him with no issues.

Now that my mate had caught a larger squid, I was determined to catch one the next size up from him and for a change, the water seemed to agree. I casted my rod a little to the right of where I was usually casting. At first I thought I caught seaweed, but it was moving freely through the water with no snagging. So then I thought a plastic bag? Nope. after a few more turns of the reel, the squid on the end of the line started fighting. It is always good to hear the reel start releasing line as I have missed hearing it for awhile. He continued to pull line when eventually he tired himself out and my mate managed to net him up. Unfortunately I didn't measure him but, he would be touching 1kg or abit more.

we ended up getting 9 green eyes in all, and a further 3 after the big one. It was a good night and a nice feed to start the festive season!

My setup was a 2500fc twinpower 10lb braid, 8lb leader (seaweed prone area) on a shimano sss v2 pro. We were using a range of squid jigs, but orange was a gun colour, and white jigs, all 2.5g.

  2. Hi mate not trying to pirate your thread. I ended up going close to stanwell tops beach, caught 12 salmon all up and 2 tailors last night.

I would like to catch something other than salmon aswell.

  3. Thats pretty interesting. I have found that there FC is heaps shift compare to others out there. But hasnt affected or improve my catch rates. Still im a fan of BM gear tho.

Their FC I found to be abit thicker, but none the less I havent have much drops due to my leader snapping. I use the 6lb and 4lb.

  4. I have a 2pc 2/4 kg rod by Shimano (I cannot remember the name but it is abreviated to SSS v2 I think) It originates from the Katana blank. The rod is a weapon for $80. Ill edit the post when I get home to check it.

  5. I do see the negative side, but maybe an investment in the inflatable lifejackets? I have got one for myself. And I can say its like wearing a normal vest.

Edit: I also agree with fishmaniac, maybe age should be taken into consideration when deciding where rules apply, the only problem is where would the information for a guide be found unless people purposely capsize their boats to test it appropriately.

PDF's in the end are a lifesaving device, its best to become accustom to how it works so that in extreme circumstances it can be removed such as explained before.

P.S. I can also recognise that removing a lifejacket underwater would be difficult, but this is where you weigh up what would be more appropriate in a situation of being in the water. I think lifejackets save more lifes then kill.

  6. Thats ok brother he always sais you are a good bloke and yes your right i am very close to him as he taught me every thing i know, hopefully we se you on the water. Cheers.

Yeah he is a down to earth bloke. Always got insightful stories and lessons to teach.

  7. I'm sick of the "Nanny" society we live in, I can go "base jumping" or sky diving, but I have to wear a life jacket all the time in MY boat.Freedom is supposed to be valued, the Maritime authorities don't realy care if I live or die, but the revenue from fines & the extra tax generated by the forced sale of all the extra jackets will look good to them.

Not to be offensive or anything, but that 'nanny society' you refer to will also be the people looking for you if you were lost at sea. They are merely protecting and preserving life. Also in terms of revenue raising raising. One person lost at sea would cost over 400 times the amount of one fine of not wearing a life jacket. So how would they be gaining any money out of it? 400 people pay for the one that got caught out is the way I see it.

Personally I think most of those rules are pretty much on the money. Although the fishing at night is abit over done. As the water is mostly calm inside the bays.

    Carl.

  8. Hi guys just thought I would throw a quick post up.

Squiddin, a mate from work, his friend, and I were fishing the Hacking a couple nights ago. Got a couple squid, the usual. We started chasing a few yakkas hanging around the wharf, after collecting a few, I found my mates heavy gear laying on the wharf. So being the optimistic person I am, I set up a yakka fillet out for soak for abit. little over half an hour later the noise we wanna hear comes. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. My mate races for the rod and sets the hook. This thing was a steam train! I started recording the encounter for over 12 minutes. But it was quickly taking up alot of my memory on my phone. The fish didnt have any headshakes, and would just not let up or give us anything. Eventually 30 minutes a few change overs of people taking on the fish happend, the mono backing appeared on the reel. Then SNAP! good bye fish.

From what squidding and the rest told me, the fish didnt have head shakes, it sat in spots as if it dug itself in, it would not turn its head towards the wharf no matter how much they tried. We narrowed it down to a large ray.

The setup was an 8-15kg stick, saragosa 6000, 30lb braid and 20lb leader.

I would post the video but its not very (PG) as alot of swearing occured, and I dont have experience with video editing.

If any one catches a ray with alot of line dragging behind it, I would very much appreciate having the line back please! :)

    Thanks guys for reading.
