hey guys i caught a weird looking fish. the local called it rock cod. it was roughly 33-35cms in length. i was just wondering if there i another name for it? can i submit it in the bait record?
-
i read from slinky's post that you shouldnt put too much backing.
-
If a fish is not on the DPI list, then there is a bag limit of 20 and there is no size limit.
Sweep are pretty "average" to eat. However, I've found that sweep fillets are great smoked.
Cheers
Peter
it is what peter said. everything else. no size limit, only 20 in total

The Tiralejo is out of the question for you on that budget, you won't get much change from $600 for one of those. The Diawa sensor surf can be picked up for about $150 if you look in the right places, and would be the best rod for that price in my opinion.
I recommend if at all possible to save your money up and get a good rod like a nitro surf assasin or similar. You'd need to budget close to $400 for those, but nothing I've seen will cast the range of weights that those rods will.
My advice, if you can go for one of the nitro rods. If you can't, the sensor surf is a very good compromise! And don't worry about what people say about how easy graphite rods are to destroy. If you look after your gear and don't lift the rod tip too high (and subsequently putting all the pressure on the tip) then you'll never have a problem. I've been fishing the rocks with graphite gear for years and never had a failure...
hello there i cant seem to find the nitro rod on the net, can you please give me a link or guide me where to look please. thank you

Very well done mate. A very nice kingie

If its not on the list then i believe there is no size limit and a total number of 20 per person (or something along those lines dont take my word for it). There is a fine print to the side or bottom of most bag and size limit lists i have seen which refer to "all other".
Musty
thanks heaps. yea it is on top.

They should all be here
I had a look at that, however i been catching pike and sweep. they are not on the site. so i was wondering if there is a more comprehensive site?
-
hi
i'm new to this so i don't really know much on bag and size limits and i usually go to the government site for reference
the only problem is that they don't have a lot of fishes there and don't really know what is legal and not
are there any other sites or places you can refer to for these for NSW?
thanks!

nice work . just wondering how big are the trailor and bonitoes?

Hi there
The fish you have there is call a sweep - i have heard they grow to a good dinner plate size but have never seen one anywhere that big in sydney, all the ones i have caught were 10 -15cm only.
Cheers
dhype
what do you consider as a good dinner plate size?

It's a pretty tough assignment catching snapper from the rocks,it's been a while since I tried however the formula used to be tough bait and 120 gram sinker cast 100m seaward to a sandy or gravel bottom so you don't snag up, then wait and wait and wait................ A good starts to look for deep water and holes drilled into the rock to leave your rod, mind you its hard too tell if the last snapper was caught two weeks or two hundred years ago just looking at a hole drilled in the rock.
maroubra rocks has quite a few holes drilled. it is a very nice place where the ocean is right infront of you. the problem is the swell and the wind!

well done on that nice bream. looks like a nice feed for the family. she will turn out to be a fine fisherwoman
-
gulp natural color works best for me. and i perfer 1/32 or 1/16 as jig head they sink slow and better

i think bontio's fins is not rigid, while tuna's fin is rigid. therefore even if you sit the tuna on its side ways or any position, the fins sticks out.
p.s. very nice catch
-
Cooee of it means that there would be more fishermen there than you could poke a stick at! Broken ground refers to reef.
Regards Jeff
ohhh ok, if there are such a spot, people would have fished out all of the snappers already.
anyhow... what about bait? i know that if you use cabbage, you target only blackfish. Is there such a bait that targets snapper only? if there is not, what is the most effective method? including burley.
thank you
-
Both mate, they go ape shit over the tuna oil, and the pellets give them something to much on while helping the tuna oil sink below the surface.
i guess your hands gets pretty dirty after the fishing session from throwing all that burley. and dont the pellets float on the top of the water?

I quite enjoy my Penn Spinfisher Big Game Surf rod, I think it's 11ft and rated at 6-15kg. It's very light but with plenty of grunt. The Sealine is a big reel so perhaps test one out to make sure the balance is ok, I use mine off the beach so majority of the time it's sitting in a rod holder. Shouldn't break the bank either at less than $100 if you shop around.
Cheers,
Adam.
sorry i forgot to write that it be for spinning application. the penn surf rod doesnt have cast weight and i am looking for something to cast far and that balances with the sealine bull and light. budget under $150 will be nice. thank you
-
You can sometimes catch snapper shore based as long as there's broken bottom close in and you can cast to it. On a regular basis, NO, if there was such a place you wouldn't be able to get within cooee of it.
Regards Jeff
whats cooee of it? and what do you mean by broken bottom?
thank you

I've just started fishing and want to know how to fish for snappers
the thing is i don't really have a boat and i heard you only catch them deep sea?
I go rock fishing most of the time though can I catch them from there? can anyone help me with places to catch regularly?
thanks!

my current rod is 12 ft and the rod tip broke
the reel i used is sealine bull 6000HI. i'm thinking of buying a spinning rod 12 or 10 ft for the rocks at maroubra.
I will probably use metal lure from 40g to 100g. spinning application
can anyone help? thanks!
i am looing for a ghaphite bank cause i heard you can cast further with that.
Also, i heard Tiralejo is a good rod but i havnt seen any market price for that rod. a shop dont even have a price on those.
