When i say kings i mean little rats in the harbor nothing big and i want a reel that has the strength to pull a just legal size kings but also for fish around the harbor

I don't know this model you refer to, as I don't think its yet available in South Africa. I would however recommend the BG series of Daiwa. Its not only a very good strong model, but it made a huge name in my country. It may also be cheaper than the model you currently consider.

  2. I inherited my Grandpa's Graeme reel. It sounds almost identical to yours, apart from mine has drag, but no anti-reverse. They obviously didn't use rod holders in those days. 1prop.gif

Very good nick, no wobble or visual signs of rust. Have seen a couple of Graemes on ebay, but I think I'll hang onto mine.

    Cheers, Steve.

Very interesting Steve. Possible to post a photo of reel?

  3. Bream111 well done mate . I like the part of buying another reel to fix the original reel !!! I service and repair reels/rods for a living in South Africa . I receive many reels in plastic containers , after owners wanted to service their own reel and just could not get it back together . I wish I could charge $100 for a service/repair of a reel . I only get less than $15.00 and then the owners still complain I am to expensive.

  4. like anything these day,s if it,s not locked up someone somewhere will have ago at stealing it.

Here by us they even steal your stuff behind lock doors and gates . They just brake it open in full day light and no one will lift a finger to stop them.

  5. gotta love the alvey reels!

My tip is to be sure to take notice of the size of your swivels, all the alvey literature will show you what size to use to suit your line. the smaller, the better i have found.

been using alveys for a few years, and with the right size swivels, had no twist issues at all.

    good luck mate.

Very true words !!! Used my fist Alvey in 1980 very low maintenance reels. Not to fond of the new models with graphite frame as the old stainless model lock was working for me better .

    Enjoy your new reel

  6. Well here's the photo of where it snapped.

I took it back this morning and they said they'll call me within 2 weeks when the "rep" comes in, we'll see how good the warranty is on their faulty product.

Below is the photo Hodgey haha.

Hi any reply from the rep about your broken rod yet ?

Okuma after sale service, by us in South Africa not to good.

  7. Sincere condolences to the family and friends or the fishermen.

Also feel that education will be safer, than to fish from rocks with any live jacket.

We have some of the most dangerous, rocky fishing spots along our cost . With very bad sea, most fishermen will rather go fish from surf ,than risk it on the bad rocks .

When one get to the rocks . Any one can see if the sea is bad with huge swell/waves. Then decide to fish is just a matter of common sense.

  8. I read the article and post with interest. I can never understand why any one, want to mess the fishing spots that all of us need to use.

They can carry a full packet of bait or bottle of beer with them. When its empty and much lighter. They are unable or willing to carry it back with them.

  9. Hi I agree with you 100%

Its my opinion that I rather buy/sell a reel with (fix spool grinder) 3 good ball bearings. 1 on pinion under rotor and 2 on both sides of main gear.Than these 10 plus ball bearing reels with junk bearings. Like the Daiwa BG 20/30/60 series reels .Old school but they can handle lot of punishment.

These new generation bearings like " AR-B bearings " are very good and can last a life time,if well looked after. I have been repairing and servicing reels for many years and have found that even these good/or stainless bearings .If left uncleaned for to long .Get damaged by salt water .

I have many customers that only visit the coast 1 or 2 weeks a year. I always say to them if you got your reels very wet, with salt water.Clean if when you get back and not just before you want to go fish the next year.

By us the guys do a lot of surf launching and these boats when off loaded in surf .Get a large number of salt water and sand on the deck. If the guys like most do, let their rod and reels remain flat on deck. These reels need much maintenance.Other wise they will need to replace bearings at least once a year. Most of these guys on the boats prefer the Shimano TLD 25 reel. The bearing under the drag lever then get much sand and water. I have seen bearings (original Shimano fitted ) so rusted that I could not believe it !

I have been using ABU reels since 1975 when I got my first 9000 C for rock & surf fishing and just love them. The past 15 years I only use the Daiwa SL 30 and 50 range mainly due to the faster retrieve 6.1:1 Help a lot on the rocks to save on sinkers.

Like I said before I am very disappointed in the materials used by all manufactures lately. Even the bearings fitted in ABU's from Pure Fishing models are just not the same quality when they came from Sweden many years ago . That is also true to many other parts on ABU , Penn ,Daiwa ,Shimano etc reels.

If you look at the 2 x photos attached of ABU 7000 C pawls, used by same guy for same period of almost 4 years . The one is 'n ABU China supplied model and the other one is an original Sweden model. This pawl in fact has been in the reel, for way more years than the other one. But both has now been using for say 4 years, with service of reel when owner returned. The damage by salt water, is clearly visible on the one pawl

This same situation I have found with bearings of reels .
