3kg pig off the rocks fishing with dad. this was my first pig fishing session of the season looking forward to a few more

Mate that's awesome!! How long did it take you to pull that bad boy in??

  3. Had a quick flick session off a beach in Botany Bay on Sunday morning. It was great autumn weather.

Caught this 56cm flattie on the run out tide. Biggest one I caught off the beach so far.

It was the only strike I had for the session, so was very pleased to land this beauty. :biggrin2:

It put up a bit of a fight, but hooked it through the tip of the mouth, so no risk of getting line bitten off.

    Pumpkinseed minnow did the damage.

Congrats!! Well done. That's massive from off the beach. :biggrin2: It's good to know that land based fishing is also getting results on the bay.

I don't seem to be that successful there

  4. I have been waiting for the wind to drop, I headed off to fish my favourite spot on Burrill Lake.

After a short time I caught my first flathead for a while, after a few cups of coffee I needed a call of nature, that’s when the rod bent almost double, I grabbed the rod and caught the biggest snapper I have ever caught in the lake

Paul...that's an awesome catch mate!! What were you using as bait?

Well let's hope the lake is firing next week, because I ain't getting any fish in Sydney.

  5. I head down to the grandparents place at narrawallee near mollymook as often as i can, I launched my kayak from jones beach at bannister head for a little troll, within half an hour i had 2 bonito and a snook, went back out on the monday morning and picked up another 2 bonito and a mack tuna in a half hour session, there was a nice westerly blowing on the monday which made the ocean nice and flat for me and my yak, all of the fish were caught on a purple/white rapala lure, on the friday of the long weekend i also went for a paddle up Narrawallee inlet, one of my favourite places, easter long weekend = very high water traffic for a place that is usually deserted out of holiday times, my girlfriend and i got our kayaks on the water by 6am, first fish was a 24cm bream on a chubby strike pro lure caught by my girlfriend, and then i picked up 3 tailor close to the 40cm mark on a little rapala uls-4, the tailor went hard for their size, love catching them, i also tried for some squid around mollymook and ulladulla with no luck, if anybody has experience squidding down there i would love a bit of help, the water was crystal clear, sun was out, fish were caught, great weekend on the south coast,

Nice report mate! Thanks for giving the info about your lure selection. Going down that way next week, so will hit it up and hopefully get something. So how big were the bonnies?

  6. By the way DCHU the two Tairyo rods I have known to break which was due to the fault of the owner were replaced no questions asked.

Thanks mate. I was impressed at the time I saw the tairyo rods in store. The only thing was that I wanted some opinions on it because I thought the price was a bit too much for something I knew nothing about. Thanks for the insight though. It was helpful!

  7. Are you lure fishing or bait fishing? If your bait fishing then a 12 ft rod is ideal, as Stewy said it helps keep your line out of the wash. A shorter rod and the line will be constantly hit by waves and drag your bait back in.

If your lure fishing then a bit shorter will make it easier to put some action on the lure but at the cost of keeping your line out of the wash (admittedly less of an issue with lures as you're retrieving them all the time).

If you're bait fishing then any rod will do unless you have to cast a mile. I have an old Shimano Taipan that cost $100 and it's great for bait fishing and not too bad for lures either.

If you're lure fishing then you probably want a better quality graphite rod. The problem with surf rods is finding something that will cast relatively light weights. Most are designed to cast weights of 2-6 ounces which is ridiculous for spinning. My recommendation for this work would be a Nitro Surf Assassin. Excellent light weight rod and will cast a lightish lure well. Only issue is the price, if you butter up your local tackle store owner you may get it for $350 but I can almost guarantee you'll love it!

Hi abecedarian, I've got a shimano taipan 12" rod but haven't worked out what reel to put on it. So what reel and set up do you have on yours?
