  1. Maybe we could put an application form for funding in (http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/mpd/better_boating.html) to excavate the right hand side, and get our lane back, and maybe get a fith one in.

btw if you see the link on the page called "Successfull Projects" you can see this project has already made the list.

Why they couldnt just put two pontoon jetties either side of the old (four lane) boat ramp is beyond me.....

  2. I think ideally one side of the pontoon for launching and one for retrieving.

If someone launches and ties their boat to the pontoon, then that will block the lane for any wanting to retrieve their boats and you can imagine the confusion (and collissions) if a launched boat tries to get past a boat awaiting retrieval on the same side of the pontoon.

You need to imagine the pontoon as a "conveyor belt" with one side moving out to sea and the other side heading into the ramp.

On launching you tie the boat up as far away from the ramp as possible so as to leave room "inside" you for the next boat to be launched.

On retrieving you tie the boat up as close as possible to the ramp so as to leave room "outside" you for the next boat to be retrieved.

The issue will be that we have two lanes on one side of the pontoon and only one lane on the other - so shich side for launch and which for retrieval

Logic would say 2 lanes for launch in the morning, 1 for retrieval and then reverse this after midday - however that adds further complexity :(

Given the abuse I have seen hurled around when drivers don't reverse on a perfectly straight line and "between the lanes" on the ramp, I can imagine some hot tempers flaring with the new ramp setup.

Perhaps Maritime should have some boating officers around for a few weeks to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Or maybe we could have "tidal flow" traffic lights on the pontoon!

Todays view of the jetty..... long enough to park a boat at the end and launch another...

  3. Will now be 3 lanes, not 4.

Pontoon down the centre replace "lane 3".

It will be interesting to see whether boats using the pontoon "block" the access to the ramp.

Hopefully some signs on "how to use" the pontoon / ramp will educate users so we can alll efficiently use the ramp and avoid "ramp rage"

I agree, I was actualy wondering what the best practice protocol is with this type of configuration?

When you drop the boat in, do you just tie it off at the end of the jetty while you wait for the parking person to run back and jump in?

When coming in, do you tie off at the jetty while somone runs to get the car?

  4. When I looked at it last week, the sign still said closed until 6th July....

However it looked a loooooong way of being complete - I woul be (very pleasantly) suprised if it was open today.

Anyone else driven past it today and can give us an update?

Definitely not... just came back a hour ago.... sign said 10th of July now.... fat chance.... here is the photo to prove it, taken today (6th of July, midday).

  5. We went out on saturday as well, first time I could not pick up any Yakkas at the usual spot. I am guessing due to the colour of the water. Then we trolled over to North Head for nothing and stopped at Old Mans Hat around 7am for three hours. Fishing the bottom with bait and flicking softplasitics.... Only thing we managed was a Rock Cod and a juvinile Snapper (both throwbacks)...... better luck next time, which might be a while away as Roseville ramp is closing for 6 weeks.

  6. Had a whiting fish in the lake today, finished with 34 whiting,2 bream, 1 luderick and a jacket. Top day and left them chewing

    Great work!!!

I went fishing on the lake a week ago... not much action but spoted three sharks that were not bothered by the boat and followed them for 5 min....

    Scary stuff..

  7. Hey mate like a lot of bars it can be perfect one minute and a rough as guts the next.Best bet is check the sea reports (wind & swells) And you make the call going by your own boating experience.Ive heard a few story's of blokes coming unstuck. And i know from experience she can get pretty hairy at times. Its not as big as it looks mate there is a reef on the left heading out and a bit of a bommy on the right That fires up in rough seas.Just check weather reports before you head out and with a bit of common sense you will be fine.If it looks to rough on a particular day take the kids for a fish in the river.Goodluck

Cheers, will let you know how we go when i get back

  8. Fantastic catch.

Just wondering if you had any safety tips (and/or fishing tips) for a tourist. Heading to the caravan park for our annual family holiday and taking the boat. Hoping to do some fishing, but don't want to end up on the 6pm news for the wrong reasons. It looks like the river mouth is benign, or should i be weary at low tied going off shore? Also will try to take the kids to Nowra in the boat for a bit of fun... and fish the river for some flatties....

  9. Cheers for the great advice.

Just want to ask does your VHF (or 22MG) works OK at 60Km? I am assuming you login with MR Swansea?

Do you try and combine the run with a fullish moon for better viability or does in not make a real difference ?

btw I grew up at Coal Point, and will be back in Newie with the boat and family over xmass, hope to go out with some mates! Fingers crossed!!

    Cheers

  10. Awesome !!!

Very impressed you do the trip in a 445F, i recently got a 540F and have been doing in close trips of Sydney.

Can you tell me at what swell size (and direction) and wind strength (and direction) do you call the trip off?

    Cheers
