Cheers Jon,
This will all be land based, so near the rocks for me (Unless i drag out the yak).Any advice on types of pots?
Cheers -
Hi Everyone,
Been a while since my last post. I was keen to see if anyone has had any luck, or tried dropping a lobster pot around Pearl Beach / Patonga way. I've got my mud crabbing down pat but was keen to see if i could get a lobster for the wife as she is not too keen on muddies.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!Chris

There should be plenty in Tuggerah Lake and Lake Macquarie. Just look for some mangroves.

Did you catch them by hand or trap?
All by hand (well prawn net). No traps allowed in Brisbane water.
-
indeed, was a great run. Brisbane water, on the central coast
-
-
By the way, that wasnt traps. Torch and a net wadimg through the mangroves.
-
5 in a hour! That's just madness. Where about do you guys drop pots anyway? Never tried before
Sorry missed the post. Brisbane water for me. Was slow the following week but saw more the weekend just gone and a decent 1.7kg buck. Ill get pictures up when im back in the office.
-
Nice catch mate! I think its going to be a good season for muddies. Got 5 in under an hour the other week!
-
Thanks, was a top feed!
Papafish, just the inside the north head of Sydney harbour. Also most of the bays through the harbour are legal to drop crab nets... just look for the shallow sandy bays with some weed patches
I thought you weren't able to drop them in ocean waters. Please correct me if im wrong (As i never hear back from fisheries) and never take my nets to Norah.
-
Ive seen heaps over the weekend of what appears to be unlabelled crab nets used in brisbane waters. Just doubled check DPI and it is illegal. "Closed to all nets & traps except dip/scoop net, landing net or bait trap"
Are crabs being over fished are they?
Ive seen some there also, I generally take them out when i do see them. I hate when people break the rules.
I personally havent had much luck with blue swimmers myself but do much better with the muddies.

Hi Everyone,
I do a little bit of crabbing in Brisbane water (NSW, central coast) by hand lines for blue swimmers and mud crabs but also have some traps at home (Lift and 4 entrance crab traps).
Does anyone know the rules regarding using traps in the ocean and how effective they can be? Im talking perhaps the likes of terrigal, avoca, Norah etc. It looks like the lift ones are a no go but doesnt say anything about not using crab traps in the ocean.
I was just thinking when out on the boat, dropping some out takes a few seconds and may mean some additional catches.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi All,
Just wondering if the bonnies are about at Terrigal at the moment? Been a while since I've been out there but hoping to get the Yak out after xmas?
Anyhow, I wish everyone a safe and happy xmas/new year!

Hey Raiders, Ive just moved over to Umina beach and not really fished around there at all.
I was wondering if anyone has some good land based (to take the little one) and Kayaking spots for myself. Also any idea if there are any land based squid locations as my little man is quite inquisitive at the moment and loves the old squid.
Any tips / Baits / Targets etc would be handy.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Kingy,
I took the plunge about 3 years ago and bought my first yak, without even taking it for a spin and i have been over the moon with my choice. Got a Hobie Revo 13. Its great when heading out in the blue as well as lagoons etc. Peddling is great as it keeps your hands free and if you are unfit like I am, when your legs get tired you can give them a break and have a paddle. They are obviously more expensive but really hold their value.
You wont be disappointed

Just wondering if anyone has fished Norah head / The bull recently and what's happening out there. The weather is looking decent and swell not too bad so thinking of taking out the kayak but not fished it in some time.
-
If the weather is good next saturday, myself and a mate will hit terrigal. I haven't been out for a little while so keen to get the yak in the water and feed the fish.
-
Just wondering how people have been going around terrigal/avoca way. Im planning on launching the kayak saturday morning around the haven for a fish. Interested to hear what people have been catching, where and with what. With the little one only a few months old i dont get that much time on the water so want to make it as productive as possible.
Cheers,
Chris

Hey Raiders
At the risk of giving away a quiet beachside camping spot close to Sydney...
I'll be spending the weekend camping in the National Park around Box Head (Central Coast). Does anyone know a productive rock ledge in the area or have tips for fishing Tallow Beach?
Hrgh
One of my favourite camping spots, just dont leave anything in your car as its a prime break in spot as you have to park so far away from where you camp.
I've not done any fishing there so would be interested in hearing how you go.

Hey guys,
First of all, I hope everyone had a joyful Christmas and a safe holiday so far and second of all, this is my first post so please don't go too hard on me! =)
After celebrating NYE and a few hours sleep, my alarm rang and it was time to head off to work :BangHead:. Started my day at 0700 on the first day of the year and god did it go slow?
Half way through work, my mate sent me a text asking if I would like to join them fishing and without thinking twice, I said "F*#& YEAH" as always :headbang:
Straight after work, still buggered as hell, I rushed home and had a quick rinse, geared up and headed out. Got to our destination around 1830 and had our first cast out by 1845. Hardly any bites, not only for us but for other fishos out there too. :BangHead:
Couple of hours later, nightfall soon arrived. Put on a glow stick out on the line and was watching it and suddenly, it disappears. Didn't think I had anything as I didn't feel much of a pull but something definitely sunk it. So I started reeling it slowly and felt a few tugs and soon realised it was something. Thought it was either a small salmon or tailor as it didn't give much of a fight.
A few minutes later, got my first hairtail! Measured to be 139cm. Thought it was an eel in the beginning as it was hard to see in the dark but once the light was shined, it was hard to mistake for its shiny appearance.

Nice one and welcome aboard. Where abouts where you fishing if you dont mind my asking and were you land based?

G'day Raiders!!!
Well what a day!! I'm knackered, bruised and busted up but nothing can wipe the smile off my face
This might be a long one..............
Good mates Bill, Tarek and myself experienced some truly memorable action on some XOS sized SYDNEY kingies today!!
We met at our usual boat ramp and after some quick preparations we made haste to the squid grounds.
The squid proved fairly productive and in no time we had a 'school' of them zipping around the bait tank.
The call was made early to venture outside the harbour to downrigg and Popper some locations........what a call this turned out to be!!
I will explain the days events in point form, cause' each fish had a story to tell.....
FISH 1:
We had been downrigging for around 20mins with not much doing when suddenly I marked a big shape close to the bottom on the sounder..... as the live squid passed it got hit almost on cue and ALOT of line was loosing off the Saltiga reel!
I had control of the rod and pumped-up the drag to 'scary' settings, trying all the while to regain some line and control of this fish.
It ran where it wanted to and all we could hope for in the shallow water, was for it to run ALONG the reef and not INTO it!!!!
Bill was driving the boat out to sea when our worst fears eventuated.........the fish had made it to reef and I could feel the taut line being stretched across it!!!
In a split second, I backed the drag off a fair way and Bill spun the boat 180 degrees and headed straight towards the rampaging king.
I wound line like a mad-man and we ended-up straight ontop of the brute......this did the trick and we managed to get his head and our line off the bottom. I cranked the drag and worked this fish hard as we all knew the reef was only 12mtrs under us!!!
A few more big runs and huge headshakes and finally this fish was coming out way
The rest is history.........119cm and 15odd kgs
Video of this fish will be posted soon.
Fish 2:
After the high-fives we set-out again and started to slow troll another squid.
It was Tarek's turn and the downrigger bait got SMACKED big-time.
Line was spewing off the reel and it was hard to control this big king. Tarek did really well hanging on as Bill again, gunned the boat out to deeper water.
This fish was in a different league and no matter how hard the pressure we applied, the fish had made to reef and completeley destroyed the leader!!! We estimated this fish judging by the fight and drag pressure, around the 20kg mark!
FISH 3:
With shaking hands we set out another bait and it got hammered almost straight away.
Much the same as the previous fish, this one had Bill pinned to the gunnel and was taking line off basically a locked spool!
Another monster king and Bill put on immense hurt on the fish while I drove to deep water.
80lb braid and 130lb leader stretched to the max!!
This proved futile and we had another monumentous bust-off!! This guy felt way bigger than the other two.....who knows 20kg+???
The braid and FG knot held fine......it's the leader being run through the reef thats the problem.... We might start running 200lb and hope that it's not too heavy that they won't take a bait??
Thats 1 big one landed and 2 huge ones lost so far!!! Crazy stuff.
FISH 4:
With fear of spooking the school by trolling yet another bait through them.....especially as there were two 'lost' fish freaking out down there....we changed tact and headed right along the cliffs to stick-bait and popper.
My 1st cast into the wash was uneventfull.......my 2nd cast and a few big pops later a HUGE bow-wave followed my popper but no hook-up.
I 'twitched' the big River2Sea popper almost like a Bass lure to entice the strike.....it sat on the surface stationary for only a second and then was engulfed by a monstrous king!!
The big king stripped line off my popper outfit and we all went super hard to land this thing!.........Bill drove and towed the fish out to safety, I hung on and pumped the king with a whole stack of drag.
Line kept pouring off a near locked drag reel.....but somehow, in only 11mtrs deep of water, we stayed connected!
The fish eventually succumbed to the pressure and 'followed' the boat out to deeper water. A few more heart-stopping runs and power head shakes and finally we swum the big boy into the net, which broke by the way! and into the boat.
For the record.......it measured 131cm and was weighed on certified scales at 22.4kg
By far the best SYDNEY king I've poppered!
FISH 5:
I'll keep it brief......Tarek lands a Beautifull king at 109cm and approx 10kg
FISH 6:
Bill has a go at poppering and hooks a great king of around 1mtr. We wanted to release the fish and with a broken net, I had to try and leader it into the boat. This did'nt turn out well, as the hooks pulled out boatside. Oh well, early release......nice if I got photos though.
FISH 7:
Another Big king landed around the 1mtr mark!!
In the end we caught 11 big Sydney kings.......we topped it off with a couple of 70-75cm fish in middle harbour in the afternoon and a couple of rats.
What an amazing day!!! Thanks to Bill and Tarek for a top session . Sydney's got some big kings lurking.....I reckon it's getting better every year.
I'm totally stoked with a king over 20kg IN SYDNEY and on a POPPER.....and in shallow water.....what a rush!!!
I have video footage of some of the action....especially the 22kg king on popper. I will try and upload it soon guys.
Heres some photos for now......
15kg King
Tarek and a nice one
Big King head and R2S popper
131cm....22.4kg King on Popper!
Tarek and 109cm, 10kg ish
Monster king!!! hehehe
Cheers,
Wacko.
Bloody Lovely!

Hay all,
Went for a session last night at Woy Woy railway bridge. Managed to catch some squid last night so from asking a local found out this is a great spot to head. Loaded up the 10kg Tcurve and off i went. First bait in the water nothing for like a hour or more, not even on soft plastics. Then i noticed the rod tip slightly bouncing slowly lifted the rod just to see. Head shake and a lot off weight after a short fight my personal best Flathead came to the surface. She went 74cm oh happy days. Next bait instant hit but this time a lot bigger. Saw a big silver flash in the water and that is all i got busted off against the pylons on the bridge. Would like to think a nice big jew. anyway the big girl went back into the drink and i went to sleep a happy man. Can not wait to get back hear soon.
Wish I had of got that guys name who told me about that spot because if he didn't tell me bout it I would never have gone there.
I wish more people were like this because I know if a young guy came up to me in the future and I can help him catch a fish that he will remember for the rest of his life then it is worth sharing a spot or two.
Nice one, i'll have to get the kayak out there.

Myself and a few mates went down to terrigal haven for a night fish targetting Flathead and whiting. Didn't have that much luck on either of those (Got busted off with a big flatty as it reached the shore) but did manage to pull in a nice Shovel nose ray followed by a meaty 39CM bream weighin in at 790 Grams. I was very pleased with that as a by catch on a number 4 longshank on prawns... Photo to follow.

Hi Raiders, been well and truly bitten by the luderick bug, this past week I have been around the rocks about 8 times and each time I have found atleast one fish to chomp on my weedy offerings.
My best day was last sunday when I landed 17 blackies in a 2.5 hour session, most of these went back, kept 6.
I had arvos of 9, 7, 5 and 8 fish as well and today I found 4 blackies and a nice pig which might I add really gave the blackie gear a work out, I kept him and 2 blackies and the other 2 went back.
I think what I enjoy about this fishing is firstly the ease of bait and berley gathering and the then the anticipation of not knowing when that little stem float will slowly receed.
Anyway that's it for now, not many pics considering the fish caught but sometimes it's very hectic and photos take a back seat...
Guess what I'm doin tomorrow, yeah baby I need another luderick injection...
This is my biggest so far at around 44cm's..
Nice one! I'm keen to try out some Luderick fishing, havent done so yet. Where about's have you been going or is it a closely guarded secret I too am on the coast.
Any tips on location, gear, technique would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
