  1. Hey Raiders,

Bit of a special post so I may go on a bit.

Thought I would share my most recent catch with you. Spent Wednesday and Thursday fishing the Hawkesbury with my brother and father.

Conditions were tough on Wednesday with the winds still blowing from the day before.

Cut a long story short - the next day was perfect. Mudcrabs in the pots and squid were cooperating, things were looking good for the afternoon run out tide.

I didn't know how good they would get.

We were just settling in to our second spot for the afternoon when all hell broke loose.

The rod set closest to the boat buckled over and I grabbed it, setting the hook. The fish ran upstream into the current and straight under the anchor rope.

So within 30 seconds of this fight starting - I was in trouble. My brother was already bringing the anchor up, so with him holding the rope up, I passed the rod under and I was in the clear again with the fish charging into the current and towards the reef.

I managed to turn the fish and thankfully it ran wide and then went with the current downstream and towards deeper water. I felt the heavy headshakes of a fish with some serious weight and called it for a Jew.

The leader came to surface three times before I got a glimpse of what I was dealing with as it continued to charge for the bottom and away from the boat. But when the murky brown water of the Hawkesbury finally revealed it to me, it dawned on me how important it would be to land this fish properly. A few expletives were uttered at the sheer size of the fish which had finally given up and was heading now towards my brother with gaff in hand.

Special thanks to my bro who slipped the gaff into it's gaping jaws and perfectly pinned it through the bottom jaw and lifted it up over the side and onto the deck.

Now we could see it in all it's glory.

This thing was way bigger than any Jew I had caught previously and definitely the biggest fish I have ever landed. I was hoping for a nice schoolie - when we measured it, it went 140cm. It didn't fit on the brag mat! (please note the tail in this photo is bent up the inside of the cast deck and looks shorter than 20cm beyond the end of the mat - but it was measured properly on flat a surface and it went 140cm)

High fives and carrying on attracted the attention of the family fishing next to us who came over for a look. The very young kids couldn't believe their eyes, and it reminded me of being a very young bloke learning of the mighty mulloway that lurked in my local waters and the dream of one day catching a big one.

Unfortunately we didn't have scales but even if we did they probably wouldn't have been adequate for a fish of this size. I checked the dpi website and a fish of 140 cm should be 27.7 kgs. It felt every bit of it.

I know it will take me a long time to top that fish but the memories will be with me forever. A huge thanks to my father Gary, and my brother James. Without these two I wouldn't go fishing half as much as I do and there is no way I could have landed this fish of a lifetime without them.

I have attached one pic with a red bull can in frame for COTM and would like to submit this fish for the fishraider records.

Enjoy the pics & thanks for reading.

    Mike

    wtf well done

  2. Hi Raiders,

We caught this fish around Fish Rock last week. They were pretty thick around a large pinical and coming up almost to the surface. Can anyone identify it?

    Cheers,

    Brian

    great looking fish

  3. gday raiders, I finished work at 4.30pm yesterday and didnt have to be back at work until 4.30pm this afternoon so I had the perfect window of opportunity to hit the harbour for some jew last night and I wasnt dissapointed.

I arrived right on low tide and there was no action until the tide turned to come back in. Around 8pm I was on the phone to my son when I said sorry I have to go something is bending my rod over! It wasnt a typical jew hit, just a slow pull and constant wieght on the rod, I suspected a flathead and i was right. first fish of the session a 67cm flathead.

    post-8689-078918800 1320206891_thumb.jpg

As i was trying to take it of the hook another rod buckled with a 52cm jew. 3 more jew and a bream came onboard over the next 2 hours and at 11.15 the final jew was hooked and landed.I had reached my baglimit so I went home a very happy camper!

the jew were betwen 52 and 67cm - not all that big but a lot of fun anyway.

    pete.

  4. Hi Raiders,

An update to my last post "starting to think i lost my mojo", still fished hard with live bait, i've had some interesting encounters but no hook ups till yesterday. These yakkas just wouldnt stay where I wanted them so figuring something has been scaring the bejesus out of them I chose my plastics again to target them yesterday.

First cast and bump/thud. Nothing. Next cast, yeah i'm on, only small(60cm) again but on 4lb line great experience and a test for my skills.

    post-10641-052394300 1318485686_thumb.jpg

My mate was with me and has always wanted a jew for bragging rights etc, told him to go exactly where I was and cast, well while netting mine I hear him "F?*% yeah", he's on too with the very next cast. His went 70cm.

    post-10641-054823500 1318485628_thumb.jpg

I netted his and he ran back to have another crack.....on again but it went under him and then spat the lure, he said maybe same size but guess we will never know. He loves bait fishing but not really a convert to plastics.....maybe started to steer him in the right direction last night lol.

My persistence to catch these fish has driven me crazy lately (lot of tired and frustrated days at work lol) but the hard work is now paying off. Now if I can better my pb I will be extremely happy, so back into it again tonight, maybe a different location though.

After the tide turned and having no more hits/takes we swapped for lights lures to try for flatties, 5 in bout an hour ranging from 30 - 45cm and some ep's too. We kept the jewies but released the other fish. No need to take more than we both could use!

All in all a great night considering we were only checking it out quickly on the tide change on the way to get squid at Cronulla. We never got to Cronulla but are both stoked with how things panned out.

For your interest the lures used were squidgie flickbait 110mm in (i think it called) princess colour on a 1/6 Oz 1/0 hook sized jig head. Both on t curve t series 2-5kg, sol 2500 with 4lb fireline(pink) and sol 3000 with 10lb fireline(yellow), both with vanish flouro leader 8 and 10lb respectively. Flatties and perch on 70mm berkley prawns 2gram head hook size 1 heads.

    Thanks for reading people

    Mick

    well done matey

  5. Hey Raiders

Took out the Polycraft and my regular fishing mates yesterday for a bit of a fish in the Bay, Was also joined by Steve (Dabee) in his boat.

Late start... we headed off to our squid spot where squid virgin steven lands an absolute monster squid in his first cast of the squid jig.. easy 2kg plus unit!

Afterwards we only managed a few small squid and that was it.

Did a troll to the heads and back for only an awfully smelly pike.. kept the pike for live bait. (no one wanted to touch it!!)

With a few small live squid and a pike we blasted to molli point to try for some kingfish and encountered a pod of dolphines splashing about...

Without a downrigger (next thing to be installed) we could not get the livies down and could not be bothered anchoring up!! Lazy bastards... result = no kings

Over at the flatty ground we started slowy but managed a great feed by the late afternoon. All fish taken on Gulps and Slambaits.

  6. Article in todays telegraph stating cabarita wharf will be fenced off and closed for fishing. This is going to happen and the 75 other wharfs in the harbour that fishers can still access to enjoy there pastime are under threat of the same thing happening the closure was brought about by too many complaints from comuters about rubbish, fish guts and frames on wharfs, empty bait packets and a lack of courtesy from anglers to passengers using the wharf.I am not a big user of wharfs to fish from but still fish them ocasionally and would like to continue to do so.This may be a wakeup call to all concerned to prevent more closures happening.

bound to happen, don't blame council's for doing so. there's too many dicks around ruining it for everybody else

  7. Thats squidding mate, its not just gonna happen. Instead of using squid jigs try using a bait with a squid prong on it...

I know an old guy that swears squid parra only come out at night.. So target places with lots of light..

yeah sweet thanks for the advice dude

  8. any of the wharves from gladesville up is worth a try just dont bother squidding unless it has not rained for a few weeks,

I have seen people catching squid as far up the river as kissing point wharf,

Where have you tried so far??

    Good luck with it,

    Regards,

    Nathan

chiswick and huntlys point dude, getting very frustrated ay :ranting2: :ranting2:

  9. hey guys, Does anyone know where I can get some good whiting on surface lures around sydney and the central coast? im going to brisbane water for a holiday.. cheers, matt.

hey dude shouldn't be that hard to narow down just look for shalowish water with sandy a bottom, and try surface poppers form the bushie range their pretty good for whiting even the odd flatie.

  10. Hi guys decided to fish tuesday night, not expecting much, armed with re-frozen pilles and two fresh frozen squid caught about 3 days ago hit the parra river. Upon arrival, spot was empty. Sweet as! Bream a plenty. Nearly every cast produced a legal sized bream, pillie cubes, fillets, heads and guts. You name it, they ate it. After the last ferry, cast in my first squid strip. Got nailed within 10 minutes. First jew in the bag 65cm. 2nd squid strip out and got a run almost within the same time frame. slightly smaller 57cm. Hopeful they would be still around cast in again. Heaps of small half hearted runs but no hook ups. about 30 mins later rod bends over but no run. Picked up the rod and struck felt heaps of weight, with very little fight. Pulled up to see a massive clump of seaweed and an a 43cm bream attached to it somehow. Out of squid and couldn't tempt any livies, so just fished for bream the rest of the night for fun. Ran out of bait left em biting at least another 15-20 legal bream released. Fished from around 10:30 - 2:30.

great work champ i was out on the river the same night were bouts were you fishing if you dont mind me asking

  11. Been awhile since ive decided to post a report, but last night seemed acceptable to do just that.

It started off with SQUIDDIN, Sara and I just heading out for a bait run for squids. The squid started slow with not a bite until the tide start to come in. With Moe slamming the first squid on the wharf. Shortly after I hooked up a little bait size squid. After I had another decent size one come in when I yell at Moe to bring his jig in because I thought mine had chasers. Turned out it had 4 chasers, which we only managed to grab one. The squid started heating up as between Moe, Sara and I, we were the only ones catching on the wharf. Sara got the price of the largest Arrow of the day pulling in one that just kept peeling line every time she tried to bring it in. Cungee George, ADawg and Snyder came down to the wharf and came to check out the bait fest we were getting.

Wanted to take the time to say thanks for Adawg bringing down a couple of pizza's for us to eat.

Cungee decided to have a go on Moe's rod and quickly he hooks up proving he is a champion of squids.

All up we got 19 squids 2 got dropped. I felt bad as others there were giving up as they did not catch any that night.

Wanted to say thanks to Squiddin for abit of encouragement that the squids will pick up later in the night. All in all we now have a decent set of baits for the jews when summer hits.

    Cheers - Carl

awsome stuff guys.... does tide change come into play when squiding

  12. Hi raiders had the misfortune today to get water in my fuel motor runs but does not rev out . What is the best way to clean out the water from the motor.

    bucko48

p.s any help would be greatly appreciated

drain the fuel tank if you can or syphon it out, pull the spark plugs out clean them with carbi cleaner and a wire brush and stick em back in and new fuel in the tank run it for a while it should run sweet after that.

  13. Hi all, does any body have good jew fish spots in georges river. i have watched heaps off clips on you tube of people catching them there in "yaks" on softies. can any body point me in the right dirction?
