    Kingfish and looking after your catch

    Great report! I love how you put a small ball sinker above the 3g metal lure. I assume this is to aid with casting distance and sink rate? 
     

    I’m considering purchasing a knife specifically for sashimi and noticed the knife in your photo. Is it a sashimi knife? And how do you find it? There are so many knife options and I have no idea which one to get. Are you able to provide details of your knife?

    Line & Leader for Snapper

    G’day everyone,

    I’m after some advice for snapper fishing from the rocks. Over the last few years I’ve been fishing for snapper in winter off my local rocks using half pillies under a float with moderate success, normally landing a couple of snapper in the 30-40cm range each session. However I normally fish pretty heavy (50lb braid and 50lb leader).

    After doing some research and reading reports on here, I decided to try fishing today with my 9’6 rod I use for squid, 3000 size reel with 15lb braid and 20lb leader. 
     

    I had some success landing a 59cm snapper after an epic fight and the leader breaking just as I washed it up with another fisho managing to grab the fish for me before it got washed back in. 
     

    However I hooked another even bigger snapper which took off like a freight train, huge head shakes and line peeling off my reel, I managed to turn it and get some line back but then it went for another run and ping, leader broken and a few choice words from me. It made me think perhaps it wasn’t the best decision  using such light gear.

    So my question is, what line and leader do others use when fishing for snapper specifically off the rocks? On one hand I think maybe I should up my leader to 30 or 40lb to give me more of a chance if I manage to hook more big snapper, but I am worried it may make the fish relunctant to bite.

    Rock Fishing Outfit

    I have the coltsniper 962 mh pe3. I throw metals and hard body lures between 40 and 65g no worries. I find the ideal lure weight seems to be 55g. I use it for bonnies, tailor, salmon and have caught plenty of kings up to 70cm with this rod. It’s a great rod although if you are chasing bigger kings it doesn’t have the strength to turn them. The heavy pe4 coltsniper would be a better choice.
     

    What reel will you be using with the rod and what’s your budget?

    The mangrove jack speared at terrigal last year (the one hanging on the light pole next to the boat ramp) was speared by my eldest son. He also speared a blue barred parrot fish last year at terrigal too.

    I have caught a small cobia in terrigal haven and speared a spangled emperor at Copacabana. 

    Over the years I’ve also seen 2 other mangrove jack speared on the central coast.

    Ive caught Sampson fish and amberjack on the central coast too but I don’t think they would be considered unusual.

    Iluka Breakwall Fishing

    Hi guys and girls,

    I am heading up to Iluka in 2 weeks to spend 3 full days fishing. I am planning on chasing mackerel and tuna from the breakwall during the day and Jews at night. Does anyone know if people have been catching tuna and Mack’s from the break wall recently? 
     

    I have never fished for tuna or mackerel so I’m after some advice on what lures I should be throwing and what live bait can I catch from the wall? 
     
    And what leader and wire should I be using? My plan is to spin with lures early and late in the day then use live bait when the sun is higher throughout the day.

    Also is there any particular spots I should be fishing along the wall? Or do I just head out to the point and try there?

     

    Any advice people can give me for fishing from the stones for mackerel and tuna in that part of the world will be greatly appreciated.

    Any Pelagics Yet?

    Has anyone started catching any summer pelagics (kings, bonnies, etc) around Sydney or the Central Coast yet? 

    I haven’t encountered any yet fishing the rocks at Terrigal and Avoca except for my son catching a small king earlier this week using a 5 inch jerk shad. I caught a few yakkas this week from the rocks so the bait appears to be turning back up. 

    Surely they should start turning up any day now.

    I’m over catching winter salmon, snapper and trevally.

    ARE THE TAILOR ON ??

    I spun Avoca yesterday afternoon using metals and xraps. Got nothing. The water was filthy green. Same thing last weekend off the skillion. There was a fair amount of swell yesterday and it’s forecast to increase today so if you go off the rocks be really careful.

    Tasline elite or WFT strong braid

    Hi All,

    I am going to re-spool my Daiwa saltist 5000 with new braid. I’m tossing up between Tasline elite 50lb or WFT strong braid 22kg. 

    Does anyone have any experience with these braids and if so which braid would you recommend?

    I do all my fishing from the rocks so I’m after a thin braid for maximum casting distance but also good abrasion resistance.

    Calamari in the cross-hairs

    Stick to fishing for squid on the central coast on the weekends. There are stacks around at the moment. I caught 9 in an hour off my local rock ledge last Saturday then another 7 in 20 mins on Sunday (I wasn’t intending on fishing for squid on Sunday, just thought I’d have a few casts before I left).

    And most of them are quality size (up to 30cm hood length). I use 3.5 size jigs and have been getting them on orange, red and black jigs.

    G’day Rick,

    I’ve had the same experience the last few times from the skillion at terrigal. Spinning for a few hours for nothing.

    I tried off the point a few weeks ago in Terrigal Haven when the swell was up and the tailor were on big time. I only fished the last 30 mins before dark in the wind and rain and caught 10 tailor and dropped plenty at my feet (kept a few for dinner and chucked the rest back). I was getting hit every cast.

    Botany Bay Calamari Morning

    Great job on the squid. I’ve been catching a heap of them up here on the Central Coast. A couple of weeks ago I caught 5 in 5 casts right on sunset with the biggest going 33cm hood length. 

    We have 1-2 meals of squid per week. What I do is clean the hoods then butterfly them so they are one big piece of squid. In the morning on the day you intend on eating the squid, I mix up one mashed kiwi fruit with one cup of milk then pour this over the squid in an air tight container and put it back in the fridge for around 10 hours. 

    Then before you cook it for dinner give the squid a really good wash under fresh water to get all the kiwi fruit and milk off, dry it really well with paper towel, score the squid in a crisscross pattern then cut into strips and cook however you like your squid.

    My wife and I had quite a few goes at different tenderising methods and I reckon this way is best. 

    To cook we prefer flour, egg then crumb and shallow fry. The kids absolutely love it (and dogs when there’s left overs). 

    We also eat the tentacles and candles.

    All the squid I have been catching have been big so I guess you can reduce the tenderising time depending on the size of the squid.

    No joy squiding but a bonus for snapper

    Hey mate. Nice to meet you at Avoca the other day. I didn’t manage to catch anything that day.

    I went for a squid this evening from 4.30 to 6.30 on the north side where I told you I get them. I got 3 decent sized squid and on my last cast got a big cuttlefish. Luckily I had my 9 year old son with me to net the cuttlefish otherwise I wouldn’t have landed the big fella.

    Snapper off the rocks

    I tried Avoca yesterday afternoon. I didn’t get there till after 4pm. The swell was still rather large so I fished from a high ledge round near the island. First cast I got snagged and broke off. I then moved about 50m back towards the beach and must have been throwing over sand as I didn’t get snagged on the bottom again. I was using squid strips and salted bonito strips. I hooked up to what felt like a snapper but as the swell was pumping I couldn’t get down to the lower ledge to land it and I got caught on the reef below and broke off. I got bites most throws then just before dark I got a good bite then just dead weight. I managed to land the biggest red rock cod I’ve seen (38cm). 

    So while I didn’t land a snapper I think I’ve found some good ground and I’m going to try again today.

    i believe red rock cod live in reasonably deep water so I assume where I was fishing was quite deep. 

    Also for those of you who regularly catch snapper, do you often catch red rock cod as by catch? I’m wondering if by catching the red rock cod it’s confirmation I’m fishing in the right area?
