  1. We seem to have well and truly highjacked the original post, sorry about that.

Dan any chance you can put up some more photos of the backs and fronts of your reels. I'd love to know a little more. Also I was under impression that if you had a 3.5 inch originalrim switch then it was an Avon Royal and the 4.5 inch was the Avon Crown.

    Matt

No worries Matt. Will try and get some pics up asap.Any info on them will be great.

  2. Very nice good job on the handles Dan!

BTW nice 3 nad 5/8 Avon Crown you have there perfect estuary reel!

Thanks!I like tinkering in the shed! The handles on Avons are a week point if not maintained.Easy to convert.Love that little reel. Will keep it for the kids! Will keep trawling online shop for one of them Trudex i think!!

  3. Worked out the photo thing!Just a few of the collection.A couple more Avons still at Mum and Dads down south.Rebuilding another at moment.Should be done soon.Would love to know how many fish these old reels have washed out in there life so far!!

  4. Matt and Royce,

thanks heaps for the info.great advice from a couple of serious collectors.I tried to put some photos of my Avons and other pins up but cant workout how to do it?Found a local fitter to have a crack at making a bush and spindal for one of the avons. Also getting it powder coated.Hopefully like new!!!Thanks again for all the tips. All pumped up to go for a blackie session asap.

    cheers Dan.

  5. Sad news. But not surprising news. There is more info now on rock fishing saftey then ever before.Life rings at popular spots.Free dvds that are easy for all to understand. What else could be done?As long as there is rock fishing there will be deaths caused by it.Deepest sypathey for the family of the lost fisherman.

  6. Thanks for the info Luderick Angler.Great to know there are other centerpin freaks out there  I am only a amateur in the collecting department but i am getting there!I picked up a copy avon last year.i think it was one of the Port Macquerie made reels.Still in good condition but a bit heavy.i would have loved to have seen the qantas reels!Think i will grab one of the new alvey pins anyway. Can never have to many reels! In your own opinion Luderick Angler what would be the best true centerpin avalible today for aussie blackfishing?

  7. Which Avons do you have Squidda ? I'm a G&Y fan as well, I on the other hand need a new spindle for a Youngs Purist. I had a fitter make one for me some years back, but it is a very precision thing a centrepin spindle. The reason I ask which Avons you have is that they may have the same spindle as the Shakespeare Eagles. AR Supreme 3 is different but if you have an Avon MK3 then the spindle may be the same as the Shakespeare. Shakespeare still sell them, so you can probably buy the spindle as a part, long shot, but worth investigating.

    Matt

Thanks for the info mate. Will check out the Shakespeare spindals.

  8. He ySquidda know what you meean on the spindle though my old mate who sells vintage pins in the UK says the Grice and Young reels would come out of the factory wit ha wobble whereas the Trudex would take months if not years to bed in and run to its tru optimum I have a Rapidex and Trudex both 50 yrs plus old still brand new and the ywill take some fishing to gethem running fast the tolerance on these things is incredible I have a couple of the Gaey Mills pins and thyeare made for salt and damn they are nice! As for the Alvey I like the look will get one eventually but think someone was looking at an Okuma when they designed it! Still like true pins over ball bearing pis its just a feel thing knowing its wearing with age and use just like the owner! They end as rough and ready as the owner!

Do you know of anyone who can make spindals for old pins?If i could find someone to make some i would replace at least 4 spindals on my Avons. They are my favourite.Havnt had the chance to buy an original Trudex.Missed one on online shop last year by minutes!!The old pins are a special thing for sure.Bit of a bugger to find out the new Alveys are made in china. Not really surprised but.Makes the aussie made "HANDCRAFTED REELS" centerpin good value for $180!

    Cheers Dan.

  9. Seen them as low as $200 lads and they are worth it, the price of top notch English centrepins exceed $500 and they are not even made for the salt or have ball bearings! Though IMHO a true pin on a spindle is as good as any ball bearing!

$200 is a bargin. If they are as good as they look.Yes a true pin is a beautiful bit of gear.I own 7 Avons,5 Steelites,2 Shakespeares and a couple of cottage industry pins and love them all.But spindles do wear.Bearings are easy to replace if need be.I think its great that alvey have designed such a reel for aussie conditions.Cant wait to give it a spin! :yahoo:

  10. Yeah, if you pop in and see Ray, get him to call and we will go for a fish. He fell today and skinned his ankle quite badly. Poor old fella. Didn't even get a fish....

Bugger.Thats no good.He had a bad fall last time i was there.I bet he wasnt happy :ranting2: Long walk home with an injury.Hope to be moving south in the near future.Somewhere i can catch a few blackies on days off!!

  11. I will probably see him through the week, so will pass on your hello. Ray and Harry are down there most days. Harry has banned me for a month as I have been outfishing him 3 to 1 lately. We have good fun.

Always good friendly compitition with the locals and regulars there!Harry can be hard to beat.Well done!!Say gday to them from Daniel and Andrea. We hope to be down later in the year.If Harry will let us stay again! :biggrin2:

    Tight lines Dan Thoms.

  12. Inside today - I bought the Sportex when I was 19, along with the Avon, and I am 60 on Thursday, so it holds sentimental value. I also use it a lot. You aren't the first to ask for a swap or a trade or a sale for the rod :) Wait until I get older and ask me again.

    ray-1.jpg

Correct me if im wrong.Photo looks like The Cottages? The fisherman looks like Ray?

  13. Brilliant, had some on my estuary pin for close on 5 years and it still floats (it was rested for the last 3 though) even so it has been out and used for well over 4o sessions and still floats I strip the first 10 foot off after about a dozen sessions.

Thanks for the feedback.Got some from Mo Tackle.Should be here any day. Will give it a good workout at North Haven on our annual camping trip.Cant wait to do battle with a few blackies!

  14. Has anyone been using Dango Wax floating line,by Line Systems for luderick fishing.Thinking of buying some and giving it a go.Just wondering how it holds up after a few sessions? If it keeps floating?Any feedback would be great.

    Cheers Dan.
