  1. Would fishing long reef in a 3.9m tinny be a safe option ? Been out there on bigger boats but never thought could do it in my smaller boat !

Just asking because the boat your in doesn't look too much bigger then mine but then again can't really tell for sure from pix !

    Cheers raiders,

    Jez

  2. That really sux and I know exactly what your talking about !

I had a situation once down in Wollongong of the lighthouse !

Me n a mate was fishing there from about 11pm till around 8am n the only reason we left was because of the atrocious behavior and etiquette of these fisher people !

Basically we fished the point of the break wall for hours having fun on sambos and tailor n slowly collecting lives to put out at first light ! As we put out our live baits 3 fisherman come down rods and gear in hand ready to play, anyways they started fishing about 20m away from us which was fine we all had plenty of room to cast and what not, also when fishing ontop of the rocks on the breakwall it can be dangerous so u do need that Lil extra space to move ! Anyways couple of minits in old mate n his crew are now about 5m away, anyways I've looked yep don't care still have enough room !! About 10mins later a float rig shoots straight past my head missing me by cm''s !! I was like WTF turned to see the guy standing about 50cm away from me !! I look at him like mate are you kidding me there's only 5 anglers on this whole rock wall n u come stand right next to me! So I turned n said "mate, honestly you just missed my head with your rig, can you please be careful when you cast" I didn't tell him to move its not my place to it is a public rock wall ! Anyways 15mins go by n he brings his rig in to rebait n cast out again !! At this point I'm playing a decent sambo on 6lb gear having a great time when WHACK!! "AHH F#*K, OWOWOW" I scream ! This idiot has done the same thing n manage to hook me in the back of the neck at this stage !! My mate comes over cuts his line n gives me a hand at pulling the hooks out ! 5 mins in we get it out and this c*#k of an angler didn't even say sorry or help with removing the hooks, he was too busy rerigging ! Anyways hooks out I pick up my 7 foot solid steel gaf with super sharp hook n I start walking over to him "yelling oi WTF did I tell you, now your gonna cop it!!" let's jus say I've never seen 3 anglers pack gear n scuttle off the rock wall so fast in my life! But then again I was a murderous rampage by this time, like hell, I just copped a bloody hook to the neck even after explaining can u please be careful when casting !

All in all some people are just c*#ks and there's nothing you can do about it, they have no respect for others and no etiquette let alone sympathy even tho he's the reason I had blood gushing outta my neck !!

So just be careful when your out bud, there are some low life's out there !

    Rant over,

    Jez

  3. just buy however many licences you need (max number of people you take out) and leave them in a water proof container on the boat.

    Is that legal ?

I thought each person who gets a license needs to fill out there own form to identify that the license was for that specific person.

  4. Mr KS

Fist of all you will need to make sure that the sounder is set up properly and you know how to use it. You will need to read the manual to work out how to use the gain, bottom lock/zoom, depth etc. This will let you tune the sounder so that you get the best possible image from it. This is probably the most important part because tuning the sounder to suit the dept you are fishing will make it sooo much easier to find what you are looking for. It will also help you find the schools of kings/ bigger single kings you are no doubt after

The way I find my kelp beds with my sounder is that I look for a really soft return just above the bottom. On my sounder a hard bottom looks like a solid thick red line with a second (or third) echo below it. A soft bottom looks like a thin red line with out a second return.

Kelp looks like a soft blue/green area just above the red :biggrin2: .

Don't worry that you don't have a color sounder. Your sounder will work the same as mine except you will have a greyscale image. The darker and thicker the image the harder the bottom. Similarly the lighter and thinner the return the softer the bottom.

Once you have worked out how to recognize the bottom you need to look for soft returns just above it. This is where you need to start looking for the kelp ;) .

One way of learning what each kelp looks like is to go to a spot where you know that kelp is and carefully look at at the sounder image. Concentrate on what the return signal looks like above the bottom.

I have found that in the Illawarra the kelp beds are usually found over a semi hard bottom, have a layer of silt/sand and then the kelp sits on top.

Unfortunately I dont have any photos of my sounder in action but google is your friend in that regard.

    Evets

Thanks for the tips mate I've been trying what you have explained for a while but always get different images up on the same sort of ground so it's hard to recognize ! And what makes it worse is there is only a limited amount of settings to tune on my current sounder (depth, sensitivity, grayscale, chart speed) I've tuned it to every possible setting but still get the same sorta display ! I might be hoping that my sounder is more capable of what it really is !!! I'll get the proper model number n I'll let you know, you might be able to give me a bit more insight on it !

Thanks again mate you really did help !!

    Cheers,jez

  5. or save some money behind the missus back and get a half decent sounder, that will take the guessing out of the equation:biggrin2:

Yeah I think thats a better option !! the missus is already worried at the ammount i spend on tackle n the boat lol.... but yeah its a must have ..

    cheers for the helps fellaz...

    jez

  6. Hey raiders,

I'm looking at doing some dedicated squid trips and just wanted to know how to identify when I'm over weed/kelp grounds for squid ! I've done a bit of squidding land based with good luck but never tried via boat !!

How would I go about it guys ? What should I be lookin for on the sounder ect ect !

I've got a Garmin black n white 200mhz sounder if that helps !! It's a very basic sounder I know but it came with the boat !

    Cheers in advanced raiders !!

    Jez

  7. Ok... I've put my strip on a bracket that sits on the frame of my canopy. It's good to have the light above you so it lights up the whole boat so you can even see you rod tips in the dark!!! The light also shines into the water, which also brings squid and yakkas around.

I might modify my canopy as jus a light holder n rod rack :D loving these ideas eh lol

  8. I have a small runabout without a cabin so I don't have the option of installing an overhead light, so instead I was thinkin running some Marine grade LED strip lighting

    Hey champ,

    Do you have a canopy?

    Hey mate,

Yeah I've got one of those sun blocking canopy things but I never put it out as it becomes very hard to fish more then one rod as the canopy covers the whole boat ! So I was thinkin running the lights alone the inside of gunwales and it should be sufficient enough to light up my little boat !

  9. The guys above are right about the Glare they are very bright!

I put a 600mm strip each side (@ $14 each)just below the gunnel so that people could see us on new years eve while we were sleeping only they were that bright we could hardly sleep with them on. I have since moved them as far up under the gunnel as possable they are still very bright.pic is after they were moved under the gunnel.

    post-8167-026853900 1344233213_thumb.jpg

I don't believe they would work as an anchor light, although they could be more noticeable then some anchor lights they may not pass as legal.

battery drain, My batteries are both 4y/o (standard car batteries) went up the hawksbury about 2 months ago lit up like a xmas tree until 2am using the strip lights, anchor light & work lights under cabin (all LEDS) & did not need to use the second battery not even for starting.

if you are going to be fishing night most of the time I would defiantly recommend a second battery wired through an isolation switch!

    Brett

Wow they are bright ! I'd probably only need 2 for fishing at night !! I have a proper legal anchor light at the moment except its the only light on the boat we use for night other then hand held torches lol

  10. I picked up some online for about $50 for a mate. It was about 4m. But it was chips with 3 lights per chip and cables connecting them. I can't remember the exact current draw but LEDs use next to no power compared to incandescent lights.

Yeah I thought the LED would be good on the battery just had to make sure ! I saw some online for about $170-$180 per 5m and you can cut it at any position to suit ! Only thing is it seems a bit pricey for a bit of strip lighting ! I can get the stuff they use in houses for kitchens n what not for cheap but it's not the same n I don't think it's waterproof !

Lol the luxuries of buying a boat......and wanting every accessories possible to fit lol gotta love it !

  11. G'day

Yeah the strip lights are great. But try to get them up under the gunnel out of direct view to reduce glare. Or consider installing a 12volt dimmer.

    Cheers Leo

Yeah I never really considered the glare but then again I only plan to use it when I'm anchored n fishing !! Not really when I'm driving between spots at night as it makes it hard to see !

How much am I looking at per meter for some good quality stuff ? And how well does it go with battery life ! I've only got a 20hp on the back so it's not a real power house when it comes to charging but at WOT n all the current lights on I'm making 13.5-14 volts !! Well that's what the sounder tells me ! With all lights off jus sounder on at WOT I make 15-16 volts !

  12. Hey raiders,

Just wondering if anyone has used LED strip lighting for inside the boat to eliminate the use of a torch for rerigging and baiting when night fishing !

I have a small runabout without a cabin so I don't have the option of installing an overhead light, so instead I was thinkin running some Marine grade LED strip lighting around the inside of the boat instead of jus using the anchor light and various torches ! I like to carry the minimal gear when I'm fishing so if this is possible n will work means I only have to bring the 1 compulsory torch to be used in emergencies and the boat it self will have enough light for anything I need to do onboard !

Any information about quality, brightness, how much power it sucks from the battery and if I should run a second battery ?

Any information would be greatly appreciated as with work I have no time to go day fishing so most of my trips now will be done at night and with night we need light !!

    Cheers in advanced,

    Jez

  13. You only get cabbage from the ocean rocks or closer to the heads and sometimes in the harbour off the rock walls.

    Regards Stewy

What about weed ? I heard there is some sort of weed u can gather from the upper George's regions that Luderick will take but I have no clue what it looks like n what to look for !

  14. Hi Mate,

Water is cold which will always make it more difficult for good results.

Would suggest to fish as light as possible. Always use flurocarbon leader.

Try live baits, IE worms or yabbies. Will outdo a deadbait anyday, thats just my experience.

I usually fish the bay out of a boat so right up the river Im no good on the boating front. In the river I would suggest to fish ledges, or narrow parts of the river. Theory is fish travel through, if its narrow, you got more chance of your bait being investigated.

That's actually a really good theory man didn't think of it that way !! Will definately be hitting up the narrow sections !! Also I'll grab a couple of live nippers n worms on my next trip and give it a go !

    Thanks for the tips matey

  15. Hey raiders,

Just wanted to know where abouts on the George's would I be likely to find weed/cabbage for Luderick fishing ? I've always wanted to give it a go but never really knew where to get the weed/cabbage from ! Espeacially during winter as its the time they fire !

I usually launch from behind flower power in Moorebank n then start my journey down to where ever the fish are !

Any help on where I could collect this bait from on the George's would be much appreciated !

    Thanks in advanced raiders!!

    Cheers,

    Jez

  16. Jewfish is on the ball mate, during winter I fish the shallows around the tide change in the Bay catching some good Bream. A good standby bait when their finicky is Chicken marinated in garlic, don't know why but they love it, I also burley using chicken pellets & tinned tuna. Keep plugging away mate!

    cheers

Hey mate , hmm I might head out port hacking tonigh just landbased to see if I can get some squid n might bring the Jew rod out n see if I can hook onto one !! Been a couple of months since I had some fun with a Jew !!

More then welcome to tag along mate !!

    Cheers,

    Jez

  17. Hey mate, thanks for the reply

Ive got a shimano cazna 2500 just baught a few months ago. I baught it from some boating camping fishing store but have lost the reciept. I might bring it there and ask about it, hopefully they can replace it without the reciept. If not ill have to try mr king spoolds way. Wet fine grit sand paper

    Cheers

    Sean221

Good luck with it bud !

  18. You'll be right jez, your not the only one thats not catching anything sounds like you are doing everything right just need a bit of luck by the sounds of it

I would try fishing the harbour also as I have had success in the cold months if you wanted I can show you a couple of spots one weekend that you might catch something.

Also another thing worth trying is shallow area's as the deeper waters might be a little cold for the fish.

    Regards,

    Nathan

Hey Nate how u doing man !!

Yeah I'm keen for a harbour session this weekend !

You interested in coming along man ?

Let me know n we go from there

  19. Perfectly legal to release them back where they are caught as explained here

    http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/pests-diseases/freshwater-pests/species/carp/groups/recreational-fishers

The truth is recreational fishing makes little if any impact on carp numbers. It has taken 10 years or something to clear 2 lakes in Tassie using netting electrocution and numerous other methods. Anyone who thinks recreational fisherman catching and killing a couple here and there will actually make a difference to their numbers is kidding themselves.

    Ben

    Hey Ben,

Your totally right It's just I started fishing with my girlfriends old man n that's where I got my passion for fishing ! He's old school and hates carp n basically told me if I ever went carp fishing to always dispose of my catch f as there pest ! He sort of explained it in a way where i thought it would be illegal if I was to release them ! Well I know better now but I guess it's still each to their own !!

For me I don't do much carp fishing at all but when I do I dispose of my catch ! I understand it's not gonna contribute greatly towards the problem but in my eyes what ever I can do to help is always a plus !

    True or not ?

    cheers,

    Jez

  20. Como bridge on the south west side, anchor over the shallows and cast a Jew bait into the channel and your bream baits on the drop off. Rising tide is the go.

Captain cook bridge... Anchor up so your transom is facing the deepest pylon about 30 Mtrs away and cast your baits to it. Good bream, flathead and Jew.

Hope this helps... Don't give up champ, keep at it you'll get it!

Thnx for the tips mate will definately be giving it a go this week ! Let me know if ur keen to come out for a session and u can show me the ropes on catching fish boat based !

    Thnx again bud
