  1. Hey guys I'm looking for a beach to camp on, fish for Jew and tailor or salmon and 4x4 so I'm near the car, anywhere up to about a 3-4 hour drive up and down the coast, just with a couple mates

Any location would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers.

  2. Hey raiders

I have recently gotten into squidding and would like to improve on it as squid is awesome bait for jewies. All I am asking if anyone could give me a heads up on any land based spots around Sydney harbour where I can catch squid regularly.

    Cheers

  3. Thanks for the reply guys!

Considering your replies, i have 40lb black magic flurocarbon leader and i asusme that this would be a good propositon for spinning but if you have any other leader brands that you reccomend that would be great as i have not experimented with many others.

    Thanks :biggrin2:

  4. Hey Raiders!

I recently bought a new Shimano Starlo Classix shorespin rod with a Shimano Stradic 5000fi and i've loaded one spool up with 20lb braid and the other with 15lb. i will be chasing bonito, salmon, tailor and possibly some rat kings. I'm not quite sure what leader to use and if you could please tell me what brand and the strength to use it would be great

  5. Hey Raiders.

I just laybyed a new Shimano Starlo Stix Classix shore spin rod and i've matched this up with a Shimano Stradic 5000fi and i had a feel of it yesterday and it feels pretty good. My question is what line should I use for the Stradic, I was thinking maybe braid but I'm not sure, I will be using this outfit for spinning off the rocks and off the beach with 20-40 gram metals and possibly some 30 gram surface poppers for off the rocks. The main target species include salmon, tailor, bonito and maybe some small kings.

    Thanks :biggrin2:

  6. Be carful buying squid from your local seafood shop as they usually put them on ice and the fresh water from the ice will send the squid a pinkish colour. If you are using squid like this then you may as well stay at home because you wont get a jew on them, they simply wont eat them! frozen squid will work on jew but make sure they have been frozen fresh and protected from fresh water. As said before - californian squid work very well they are usually in prime condition and I personally use them all the time and have caught heaps of jew on them in the harbour and the hawkesbury. Dont worry about them looking black from squid ink thats how you want them looking, The actual squid should be white with a greyish tinge - if they are pink dont waste your money buying them!

Oh one more thing! i know there are some who will disagree with me, and I have to admit I dont usually target jew from the beach so it is possible that beach fishing coud be different, however, without trying to sound as though i am bragging i have caught literally hundreds of jew over the years from undersised fish right up over 20lb and I have NEVER yes NEVER caught a fish on the full moon!!!! I beleive it is a waste of time even trying for them at that time, however, as I said before fishing from a beach could be different.

Generally speaking I have found that the darker the night the better they bite! and if it is cloudy and overcast or drizzling rain even better, but remember I am talking from the perspective of estuary fishing, there is a theory that the jew use the full moon to hunt so perhaps from a beach - who knows! anyway good luck.

    Tanks Pete.

The last time i went beach fishing i bought some 'southern calamari squid' which the flesh wasn't pink but was white. Im also leaning towards ctaching some live yakkas and using them shortly after for a beach session!! But the MAIN thing concerning me is the moon phase. some say full moon, some say new moon and others have thier own theories. Im just so confused, the only thing that is most reliable is if i put in the time and try different nights and find out what moon phase is the best.

  7. ....in theory then this week-end should be good. Full moon. High tide dusk/early evening. High pressure system over us to excite their swimming bladder, and the water temp is still quite warm......did I forget anything??

Good luck all...want to see lots of pics next week :biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

Good idea jot, I probably was already going this weekend, I checked out the weather before, and like you said high tide is around 6-7 for saturday and sunday and full moon is just around the corner. im already excited!!! :yahoo:

    Cheers

  8. Mate if you cannot get fresh squid then you can always buy a box of California Squid- available @ most good tackle suppliers- thjey're fresh and easy to get a hold of... and most fish LOVE them :1fishing1:

Ultimately the BEST bait for Jew is fresh caught Squid but they also like live poddy's and mullet strips- now with the Mullet about to run for spawning you will likely find they are hungry for Mullet I'd personally be taking both to any proospective Jew spot coz you never know what they will take.

Learning to catch your own bait like squid, yakkas, mullet is just as rewarding as putting them out for the monsters of the deep- IMHO you should learn to catch your own ultra fresh bait as it will save you a packet on bought bait and you will always have fresh available- nothing beats your own caught bait and nothing will ever come close to it IMHO

    Tight lines

    Anthony

    Thanks mate!

I might just get some squid from one of the seafood shops near my area, but i may go to a sydney wharf this week and get some live yakkas, theres heaps of them at this spot and like you said its rewarding. i've got my aerator and massive bucket setup for the yakkas, but the thing thats concerning me is that how long will they survive??

  9. Im only a beginner in beach fishing for jewies, but iv'e picked up a lot of info so far...

I went down to thirroul (illawarra) the other week trying to chase the elusive jewfish. Me and my dad fished from about 7:30 till about 9 or 10 but no luck, although one guy caught a 75 cm jewfish and released it. i just wanted to know if anyone has any tips i can use such as swell, moon phase, tides. I've got my rigs and gear setup, but i just wanted some tips for the weather conditions.

    thanks :D
