  1. mate to be honest the ink thing is a bit of a myth when it comes to a dead squid as it wont shoot out in desperation there fore not exciting any fish the chances are as soon as you cast your squid out the ink which covers your bait will disperse before your sinker even hits the bottom.

On freezing and vacuum sealing the squid i have found that the less ink on my squid the better it turns out as the ink can burn the skin, once you capture the squid let it empty its sack then put into the bag

  2. i beg to differ with most of your opinions.

i will never waste my freshly caught squid on any fish except kings, and thats only if they are alive, i prefer to eat them as they are way more tasty than any fish caught in my opinion.

95% of the jew i catch are on purchased slimeys non frozen, and frozen squid caught and sealed correctly and let me tell you, you will get jew over 20 kg doing so.

    good luck mate

  3. mate go sound out the front every bait ball you see on the sounder drop an unweighted jig to the bottom and cranck it straight back up. continuouly find the bait balls and repeat the action and you will eventually find the slimeys

  4. Hi Jack,

I was just curious as to what reel you would deem better than the two main contenders.

I have heard similar stories about the diablo's as SZ1, and considering how few of these reels are out there (Compared to stella's and Saltiga's) it doesnt rate very high on my list. Only got knows many Stella's and Saltiga's are out there.

We've just upgraded out baitcatching reel to a 20000SW Stella, we'll use this to jig slimies in 80-100fthms as well as pitch baits at Marlin, cube for tuna etc.

What model 20000 do you have and what are the issues you've encountered?

    Chris

ive got 2 sw 20000, and yes they are ok for cubing and the old struggle with a beakie as your not exerting huge amounts of pressure normally set drag to say 5 8 or 12kg.

We are talking about a reel which would last a trip heavy jigging or throwing poppers in shallow water, i have done it and seen what a Gt or heaven forbid a dogtooth does to these reels after a short period of time under heavy drag.

I personally am not a big fan of paying overs for a reel that offers not much more than a $259 Fin nor, if i had my time again i know what i would be doing and thats not buying one of these reels hence why i tried to give some advice its amazing what advertising does to us,

ask any retailor that sells these reels to test the reels as what the manufactor speks suggest and they will not, as they no it s not achievable.

    Regards Jack

  5. With regards to the Diablo reel I would stay clear of these, I recently came back from a week of jigging from Perth and one of the charter I was one had the smaller reels on board, the reel seems to have a real lumpy drag system which resulted a few fish lost. Although as stated this are on the smaller 9000 models so maybe the larger model has improved.

mate as of this year all Diabalos will be made with complete Australian components so those first few whcih had minor hicups will be ironed out.

  6. Hi Jack, BRP or any company do not supply engines of this HP with props becuase they do not have any idea of what hull that 90HP is going to go on. You too are overpropped and/or too low in the water. I imagine you have trimmed out like Greg has said because that can get a fair few more revs. We rig most I-3 E-TEC on hole no.3 and your engine wants to see 5000-5200 at WOT to be in its ideal RPM band.

PM me if you like and get the serial number of the engine and prop P/N and we can go from there.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

    cheers mate will do

  7. Hey Jack,

If you feel a Stella or a Saltiga isnt up to the task, can you suggest a reel you feel is capable ?

    Chris

mate have a look at the big Diabalo it has the same internals as the saltiga but upgrades on all the saltiga faults for half the price,

Aero depending on what type of fishing you are doing, as im talking about the bigger size reels, what type of fishing are you doing?

i ve got the smaller stella the 2500 and love it but my 20000 is another story, i wont even get started on the saltiga

If you need any help pm me and i can guide you in the right direction.

  8. Hi, as the guys have said you are overproped or not set-up right if you can only see 5000 at WOT and you WILL hurt your engine. It is like driving a car up a never ending hill in top gear-the engine is lugging and not good for it at all. Also getting the revs right or set-up (engine height) right will make a huge difference to the way the rig performs.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

G'day Huey my 90 etec is maxing out at 4700rpm now i have a 17" SS prop.

Now is there a factory prop that comes with them or is there a prop you can recommend?

    i have a 5m half cabin boat

    kind regards Jack

  9. water quality has a huge influence on the catfish the more rain we get the more prevalent the cat fish are.

During the last period of drought prior to 07 i did not catch a cat fish for 4-5 years, but insaying that the pike eels were in plague proportion.

now i find they are of equal proportion so we are in a fase period where the pikies are on the way back and the cat fish are slowly deminishing.

Now with the tides, you will find on any small tide they will be feeding at more of an intense state.

A couple of ways of avoiding them are to, use whole butterflied baits on a single hook rig as they will not eat the head of a slimey, mullet or yakka.

When using squid on a 2 hook rig you must use a extra long trace (3m).

They are also more prevalent at night

  10. AND TO ALL THOSE WHO WE HAVE ASKED FOR HELP AND YOU HAVE KEPT YOUR SECRETS TO YOURSELVES AND NOT ANSWERED OUR CALL FOR HELP---- [/b]THANKS FOR NOTHING. :1prop:

I would like to add something.

I really have no idea where you are fishing but to me it looks like somewhere in middle harbour possibly round the spit.

Now where your fishing is close to moorings, you ain't getting much run there and you are out of sight of any major point so 1 i doubt there is any natural reef around you and secondly your spot would not be providing the perfect jewfish haunts.

When searching for a new spot my number 1 thing i look out for are large eddies, you find the eddies and you will find the jewfish. as the eddies are a sure sign there will be the right structure under the water eg a drop off, reef etc.

    Good luck guys.

  11. Hi, do not use year old fuel, disconnect the engine and fuel line at the fitting and drain the fuel out of the boats fuel system. A bit harder for the engine and being a sealed fuel system I would not get that worried about it. Here we have the proper tools to do this, but I doubt you would. Once the boat fuel supply is empty fill with premium fuel and take it easy for the first 10 minutes or so when you put her back in the water. I also hope you have a water seperating fuel filter and if so replace the element. If not get yourself one ASAP.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Gday Huey quick question mate my local Etec dealer advised me to use premium only in my 90 etec i see you recommend that to but all other people i speak to tell me standard unleaded and that premium will damage it, is thereany negative apects to using standard fuel in a etec?

  12. personally i would steer clear from these reels and the daiwa saltiga they both claim to achieve great amounts of drag pressure which they cant achieve and secondly i have personally seen them tested on motor bikes trying to pull 15kg of drag to find bail arms snapping, shafts snapping and so forth, have a look around and find something that can actually do the job.

    regards Jack

  13. Hi All,

Just after an opinion on how to keep squid gathered 24 hrs before use.

Caught a little bag of mixed arrows and southerns last night which I plan to use tonight. As soon as i caught them I placed them in a plastic ziplock bag and sat the bag upon ice bricks.

When i got home I placed the bag straight in the freezer.

This morning I got up and checked them and they have that mottly maroon colouring.

Is this ok or should I not freeze them next time if I'm going to use them the next night?

    Any tips appreciated.

Thanks in advance & Merry Xmas,

    Slabslinger

P.S. Adjustedpete - These are finally droughtbreakers after our sesh. Have targetted them regularly but deadset lost my mojo, up until now. I think i'm back  Now to turn them into a Jew or two for Xmas Day :yahoo:

Mate straight in the fridge on a plate with glad wrap.

they will remain like the way you caught them for days

    Regards Jack

  14. Mate i hope you don t mind but i really feel that i must add something to your post.

1 No mullet in that river is to big for the big mulloway infact the bigger the better.

2 if you really want to catch good jewfish in the river consistently you must use river squid, very fresh from the trawler or just caught.

3 Eels still take live baits whether it be a herring, yakka or tailor.

i have caught many big jew with mullet that people look at and scoff, infact i lost a jew on friday afternoon on a mullet that would easily gone 2lb.

    tight lines and good luck

  15. Cheers brother, heard the next sized Jews was only 6kg?

Not very good fish but the ones that needed to produced when asked, congrats too all that entered and won.

Should catch up soon, we had the baby! Beautiful little girl!!!!

congratulations on the baby thats great news mate.

yeah 6kg got second. i caught a 8kg half an hour into the comp and released it thinking i was going to get better it went down hill from there.

i got a new etec for my boat so im loving life at the moment, we definatly need to head out together speak to you soon

  16. Hey all, have been viewing this site for a couple of months but never posted so here goes, been chasing damn jewies for the last couple of months without much sucess, so with the good reports filtering out of the harbour and the water warming thought is was time to start downrigging out wide so me and a mate headed out early to grab some live squid, the weather was good for fish not for us with a bit of rain and slop and chop we persisted and came up with this fella and a couple of smaller fish lets hope its going to fire this summer. CHEERSpost-11292-1257748993_thumb.jpg

    Is that you Mitch?

    Nice King

Ps never give up on the Jews mate

  17. my apologies, the jew was 96 cm not 93 and went about 12 kilos, my mate read the post and said i short changed him, still a beauty

it is a healthy specimen but mate i truly think your mate is streching the truth a little i catch quite alot of fish that size and it truly would be lucky to be 7kg maybe he meant 12lb.

i got one 1100mm last week and it went 11kg.

at the end of the day nice fish keep up the good work

  18. Hawkesbury Classic in on the 6th ,7th and 8th of november Cheers Laurie . p.s they are really bad tides that weekend.

    Why do you say that??????????

I fish the Hawkesbury every week and i actually target my big jew around the new moon phase before and after and most of the time it produces you have the really big morning run with the smaller afternon/evening run when you can target your other species over the weekend.

I believe they are perfect classic tides with plenty of fish to be caught.
