  1. Confusion strikes again ... or is it just personal preference. What's the best application for fishing land based for large kings, tuna and the like off the Stones. Currently using spin gear with braid but have had different suggestions on what the best application is. Some say braid for popping and stick baits which I use but I also live bait yakkas and squid.

The conflicting suggestions that I've received are that with braid you can cast out further for popping and cover more area but compared to mono abrasion resistance on the rocks will be poor. Would abrasion really be a problem when using 60-80lb braid...?

I've only caught rats so far and would like to make the right decision on the tackle to use... For the upgrade I Really only want to spend once...!!! Should I go mono or stick with braid?

Next...are there any real advantages or disadvantages when chasing the big one? Some say you can do all on heavy spin gear + 8'6-10ft ( better control when in close yet hard on your back ) and others say overhead + 7-8'6ft ( more line capacity easier on your back and more fighting power ) is it best to stick with heavy spin or pull out the TLD 50 and match it with a short stick...?

To all land based fishos.... interested to know your personal experience tackle preferences advantages & disadvantages of the gear you use ( with the above mentioned ) when chasing big game ,,,!

  2. Too all of you raiders that chase big kings off the stones...have been live baiting popping & pulling surface and stick baits off the rocks for quite some time now ( a few years in fact ) and have not had much luck in pulling in a decent king. I generally try to get my live baits out as far as possible - and the same for when I'm casting or popping... Should I continue this technique or am I doing it all wrong.

Have also been down to Jervis ( Beecroft ) on many occasions & have only picked up rats. Really wanting to hit the big one I'm in need of all of the advice I can get...! Would the seasons play a big factor... Tides ... Swell or even barometric pressure ?

Hitting Jervis is great but a mighty long walk out... Would there be any other locations in the area that I could try ? Saying that I'm up in Sydney ( Sutherland Shire ) and happy to travel the 3-3 1/2 hrs either side North or South. Have heard of big kings been caught in the Sydney area off the the Rocks but haven't been lucky enough to have been given locations in which to try. I'm not asking for specifics but the general area would be a great help...! Would it be worth trying Kiama blowhole or even the Royal National Park.

Any advice on how to hit the recipie to success would be greatly appreciated ...?

    Cheers

  3. Hi people... Looking at chasing some big kings and other Pelagius off the Rocks... Hitting them with stick baits & poppers as well as live baiting yakkas & squid. Wondering if any of you have... Or have used the Daiwa Catalina 6500H and can give me any reviews / reports on this reel. Had a look at the Saltiga but way too pricey...$$$...? ( around $1200 ). Is it worth spending the $800 on the Catalina or should I look at the saltiest 6500H which I'll probably be half the price.

    Any thoughts.............................?

Hope to hear any of your suggestions

  5. Hi Guys... Thinking about purchasing either the 2015 Exist 3012H or the Morethan Branzino 3012H. Do a lot of land based spinning and popping off the rocks for kings ... Bonito ... Sambos ... Etc. Just wondering if any of you would know which of the two reels is the stronger make. Price difference is about $100.00.

Exist $899.00 vs $800.00 for the Branzino. Would really appreciate if any of you could give your view/ advice on the strength comparison between the 2 models.

Waiting to hear your thoughts before I go and spend a rediculous amount of cash...!!!

  7. Hi to all who love their baitcasting reels.....Check out the New DAIWA T3 Series...Looks like a great performer, super light, fantastic casting control and very decent drag rating. Have checked them out on OS websites, they just look amazing.

When will they will arrive here in Australia?...How much will they Cost? $$$$$....can't wait to get one....Does anyone know if these reels can be used in saltwater?....just wondering because all of the japanese sites are promoting as the best bass reel(does this mean freshwater only?)

    Any inside info

  8. Mr Customcasting, one last question is best to spool with braid or mono....really cant decide which way to go.....have read some reviews that braid can be pretty dangerous for fingers and tackle if you end up with a birds nest or get your finger caught in line when casting...but the line capacity would be a big advantage with other methods such as live baiting.....or would you suggest that I go with mono seeing that I am new to overhead casting. Please provide your suggestions and choices of preferred brands to use in both mono and braid....for casting with overhead reels.

    cheers

  11. Sorry bit late for me to reply...have been really busy, but just wanted to say thanks for the replies...great stuff. looking into the avet reels but seems a little confusing, their descriptions of reels are not very clear....they dont seem to specifically tell you what each reel is used for...if any one can help me out with suggested models of magged avet reels, would be greatly appreciated....I'd be looking to cast long distance and dont think i would really need a 2 speed. The single speed reels with fast retrieve would be fine...also are their drag ratings in lbs or kg?

Where is the cheapest place to buy daiwa or shimano from overseas...US or Japan...let me know

    Cheers again

  12. Thanks for all of the replies, checked out all of the reels suggested and love the idea of the saltiga surf....litlle pricy but i'll be worth it after saving for month or two. Also had a look at the shimano Trinidad 20 & 30DC models, has any one used these or heard of any reviews that i could check out...think I could get get them alot cheaper from the US.....but still like the saltiga surf....what a reel!!!!

  13. Hello,

to all out there who love casting a mile with overhead reels mainly beach and rock fishing. Hoping to obtain some info and advice from experienced overhead casters-mainly on which reels would be the best for casting 3-5oz sinkers + bait. Would love to know what size reel is the most comfortable to use and which brands and model of reel to go for. Do I go for level wind or no level wind, what stength line do I use...should it be mono or braid.... Not too fussed about dollars, happy to spend if the quality and performance/reliability is there.

    All advice welcome

    Thanks

  16. Thanks Anthony,

Finally someone out there that understands my question, thanks for the advice will check it out, have you used power pro or tuff line xp before in these line classes. Also just to let you know all I use at night or late arvo on the beach is 80 lb jinkai......only thing to bust me off is sharks or un-stoppable rays.

If theres any one else out there in this line class off the beach or rock, please send through info on your favourite brands of braid(+advantages)

Anthony good luck on those thumper tailor, if you ever get any pics i'd love to see them.....send em through

    Cheers RNB

  17. I use Fins original PRT for 20/30/50lb braid for surf casting as I reckon Fireline is garbage in heavier breaking strains and too stuff with too much memory- but for lighter work on the beach I choose Fireline over anything else.

Leaders I use Berkley Vanish for 20/14/12/10/8/6/4lb and use Jinkai and Black Magic for 30/40/50/80lb flouro and I STILL get busted off every outing! go figure!...

A word of advice though ATM there are HUGE greenback Taylor around the beaches and they will pop you on anything under 30lb I got busted off on weekend several times on big thumper Taylor and Jew on 50lb braid and doubled 30lb flouro leader- IM upping my next outing to 40 and 50lb flouro as they make such short work of your leaders you should also make up spares prior to going out so you arent spending time retying all your terminal gear when the hoardes of thumpers come through.

Taylor will remain in the area for the next 4-6weeks and this year they are bigger than any year Ive reported @ my spot which Ive fished for the last 7 or 8 years without fail every weekend.

Good luck with it mate beach fishing is awesome def my favourite form been doing it for donkeys years and will always be a sand-slinger til the day I kick the bucket!

    Tight lines

    Anthony
