  1. Good stuff mate! whereabouts is the spot or is that a secret?

Hi Morgo - the spot at Lane Cove is not a secret - I used to fish every warf in Lane Cove River - the secret is where you cast.. took me a while to figure it out - and bait / line weight is very important. Every warf in Sydney Harbour always has jew swimming past at night. BUT they swim straight past your feet looking for food. Good luck stopping some of them though - even XOS sized bream 40 cm and up.

The second spot is not mine and is a secret sorry.

  2. Hello All,

Jim and I are off on our honeymoon in a fortnight and wanted to ask if any of you have fished in Phuket?

    Is their fishing stuff cheap?

I know Stu and Donna went, and just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced fishing over there.

    Thanks Alison

  3. Hi All,

(Its Jim not Al) Been a while since I put a post on. Been reading all the great posts

for the past 2 months whilst not being able to go for a proper fish at all cause of work.

Decided to go out for a fish on Friday night and Saturday day with my son Ay. My boat

is out of action so it had to be landbased.

First stop on Friday night was the Lane Cove river. One hour of waiting then the rod

screamed - Ay got that excited that he called Al who was at work and was screaming.

Had a bit of a fight - and then a nice chrome plated jew came to the surface. He weighed

3.5 kg. Hi fives between Ay and me and all was great. We sat there for 1 more hour without

    a bite then went home.

    post-1898-1188856158_thumb.gif

The next day I said to Ay will go for a spin for soft plastics for jew in the upper Parramatta

river. He kept on thinkning that we were going for a squid session as we have been doing a

lot of that over winter. Anyway packed the soft plastics, got to destination and we started

spinning. No luck from me at all. We were taking turns on a $600.00 outfit. Must be the luckiest

5 year old I know. I gave Ay the rod and I went for a short walk to look at where the eddy was

moving. All of a sudden I hear "DAD DAD - got one" I looked over the bush and I saw Ay

holding the rod with the braid peeling of the line. Was a great site.

I said to him "Stop the bus - get him Ay - take your time" He was arched back and fought well.

I then saw the rod bouncing.

Thought it was head shakes from a jew. After a good fight we saw colour. Out came this fantastic

trevally. I was a very proud dad. We took pics then let it go. After that nothing at all. He caught

it on a 3 inch watermelon.

  4. i went out the night we caught a jew in the harbour only to get one squid, not that many around at the moment.

    Hi Crazy John

The calamari tend to hang around all year - the big ones however like to chase chopper tailor and whiting. One had a whiting in him. I avoid the usual spots for squid that most people go to in summer when squidding during winter. I am getting ready to go tonight for squid and then an all night jew bash in the harbour - land based. This time of year the jew are quite good so its been a good 2-3 months since I fished for them.

  5. Just to let everyone know - I have been doing very well on squid in the past week. BIG XOS calamari around most warfs in Sydney Harbour. Only problem is that you need to fish 2-4 pound braid as the strong winds have been making it hard to feel what is going on - next pointer - BIG jigs - On Tuesday I started with 1.8 and 2.0 jigs. After a few quiet casts I put on the 3.5 gram babies... They sure worked. I have caught 3 kg of squid in past week and at close to $30 per kilo I am stoked -- Stocking up for jew bait in August - time for XOS jew of the beaches. PS - Do not let shallow rough water scare you - The squid will hang out where there i whiting and thats where they are sitting.

    Happy fishing : ) :1fishing1:

  6. Jewgaffer you have sort of lost me also. I have had amazing success on jew in the worst weather when everyone is at home confined to the protection of their creature comforts. I must agee with you on one important point. I have found jew to go ballistic before a major change swings through. Usually the day before fires up. I have not had great success during the few hours before a southerly change. Bream seem to go spastic during this period.

  7. Bloody waesome effort - I have been out the past 2 nights with only 1 run from a jew and a few tailor. Well done mate - nice looking fish. PS: I have been 2 layers of thermals plus a snow suit on top. Have been nice and warm.

  8. some decent fish caught there congrats.. yer as Rob said wat do u mean by ambos? :S

    bl on the fish finder..

Ambos -- Sorry guys meant to type Sambos but typed to fast.

Yep that was me - Ay had his life jacket on - poor thing cannot move with it on but it is better

being safe as opposed to taking chances.

The tailor were from 2kg to 3.5kg - BIG fangs on them - lost even bigger ones as they cut my trace.

The king I think was around 65 cm - not a big fish but legal and not a very good fight on 30 pound rigged for big jew.

Middle Harbour is a very interesting place - will have to discover it further.

Sounder got knoked right of the transom, dangling from the cord - hope no damage was done to it - wont be taking the boat out for a while - its in the carport - I call it the winter spring clean on the boat - when I modify and repair. The water had heaps of rubbish in it - fisherwomen and men - be careful at night as this log almost punctured my hull - I thuoght it was a small branch until it hit BANNGGG ( my stupidity )

  9. Been a while since I have posted a report. Have not fished much this year as I would have liked to but nonetheless have caught something when I have gone out. The first catch was before this bad weather hit. I spent a very cold night out in Botany Bay casting strips of squid and squid heads behind a heavy birley trail. I caught heaps of fish including this kingfish which surprised me totally. On the night I caught about 6 ambos and 3 XOS sized tailor.

This weekend I decided to venture into waters I am not familiar with. Woke up at 8.30am and grabbed the boat and my son to go to middle harbour. Had heaps of frozen yakkas in the freezer that I decided I would take. Also grabbed some prawns from the servo for the youngster. I wanted to try and get some John Dory after doing some late night research the night before. Got to the boat ramp and launched the boat. I was surprised how dirty the water was. Stopped before the spit so my son can have some fun. He caught a few undersized reds and that kept him happy. Meanwhile I was doing my head in trying to figure out where to find yakkas. Anyway we left that spot and I headed out looking for cleaner water. I got to middle head then it was hold on for your life. IT WAS ROUGH so I moved on in. As I was boating in I sounded a nice drop of. The tide was almost high so I stopped and burleyed up. I ended up with quite a few flatties including this beautiful female which weighed 4.5kg on the dot (my PB). She went back into the water later on after I looked at her in the live bait tank. My son woke up from his arvo snooze and we moved in. I hit a log when I passed the spit bridge and knocked out my sonar (fish finder). That was the end of the day.

  11. Managed a good session on Mulloway yesterday morning in the Bay. Landed 3 from 5 hookups - all schoolies but 1 that pulled 10 or so metres of 40lb braid of locked drag from my OH jig stick (Shimano Trinidad / Saltiga PE4 Coastal). That fish proceeded to spit the hook, or it pulled, not too sure. What I am sure about is that all fish hooked on mono were landed, and both hooked on braid were lost..

I am begining to lose faith in braid for live-baiting for jew.

Notably the runs were very tentative and all fish caught on live herring or yellowtail (frozen squid were munched at, but no serious takes).

Anyway, here's a pic. I was lone soldier, so no real size comparator but the spin stick...

    post-219-1177335202_thumb.jpg

Hi mate I am agreeing with you on the braid and the jew. This year I have lost more and hooked less after using braid. I have found that good mono like siglon is the best. I have reduced my captures by 1/5th at least. Jew feel weird when hooked on 30 pound braid - but feel nice and comfortable when fishing 16 pound mono.

  12. Of course!

Jim fishes alone except when we are with him.

During the week and Sat nights the little fella goes with him as I work two jobs and it involves night work so Jim targets his jew while ay tries to catch a bream or flathead. Then he crashes out in the back of the car or boat till they leave.

When I have the chance I usually go with them and used to fish alot just Jim and I on the boat.

  13. Jim and I have been towed a couple of times.

    1. Hole in the fuel line thing and we lost all our fuel

    2. Unsure what the prob was but Jim fixed when we got home.

No big deal to me - shit happens. We chuck in a bit of money when the coastal patrol boys came to get us.

Jim been towed another time by water police.

Jim carries tools and can fix pretty much anything that happens to his boat. It is only when there is no other option to get back to ramp that we call.

Once round at molineax the metal part connecting the steering cable snapped but we managed to get back to boat ramp by dodgying it up with a squid jig and me turning the motor manually!!!!!!!! Good fun!

Never boring when Jim is a round!!!!

  14. After 6 years of chasing the Mighty Mulloway, it unexpectedly happend.

As usual the plan was to get some squid and head off to chase some kingies.

Squid was no problem, after an hour or so, we had half a dozen in the live well...off to the markers.

Conditions were great, very little wind, tide change at 9am.

Got there around 8:30, and dropped a livie down & waited, and waited....livies getting destroyed by pickers...moved on.

Next marker...only strip bait available at this stage, drop it down, a couple of drifts later considering moving on when I see a rat come up to inspect the marker, then turns around and dives when the boat gets close..."should be any moment now" I say to myself, when suddenly I come up tight!!

At first no initial ran, as the drag is at max, I figure its the little rat kingy, when gradually the run starts to increase & line is peeling off at a surprising & worrying speed .

Boat is starting to get pulled along, I step on the electric motor in a vain attempt to get line back.

This is strange, normally the king will undoubtly head for the marker, this guy was heading into the middle of the bay.

Weapon: Starlo stix , Tournament pro- 8kg rod, 20lb braid, 30lb trace, is bent over but doing a good job of controlling this thing.

At this stage still calling it for a "stupid" king when the most beautiful fish reveals itself...

Now Im nervous to say the least, start praying to God that nothing snaps, breaks , comes loose, gets tangled or any of the hundred things that could go wrong.

Starting to get tired now( me and the fish) and is getting close to the boat, net aint going to do jack!! need to jaff...Tony,(thank you mate:Tumb up: ) cool & calm as always gets it into position under the gills & heaves it on the deck:goodone:

At the moment ALL of Botany bay would have heard the the screaming, back slapping, hollering and excitment that can only be produced when you have caught the fish of a life time.

In my mind the fight only lasted 5min, but Tony reckons closer to 12min..ill take his word for it, either way those minutes are now embedded in my soul.

Take it to the bait shop for certified weigh in 20kg on the dot!!! 132cm long. Destroyes my previous PB.

Even now 3 days after the event Im still shaking my head in wonder.

    The Best Australia day EVER:appl:
