  1. never defrost your pillies, you want to keep them frozen for as long as possible. and really sharp hooks should solve your bait snapping issues. if its still a problem try adding salt to you old pillies they wont freeze but will stay nice and stiff and easy to bait up. good luck!

  2. Hi Gilbey,

I am somewhat obsessed with spinning for them off the rocks, and in my experience I have found that to some extent they are actually present almost all year round. Very very slow in the 2nd half of the year until the water starts warming up again.

If you are spinning I would dare say the summer month are the best (never caught them on lure May-Nov), but if you are using bait like I said I have caught them in winter. I usually fish for them from Bass Point or Port Kembla but from next week I will be full time living in Sydney so need to get my way around the Sydney fishing spots.

Dude, If you want to, send us a pm, I have a few a couple spots that I have been getting them from but would like to find somewhere more consistent, if you wana join forces to seek out places/I can show you mine im all for it.

  3. So having had some success from the beach in the recent low swells with flathead, i decided to try again in the bigger swells to see what difference it made.

so i up my gear to heavy star sinkers, and armed with a few salted pilchards i set up base on the beach and waited for the surfers to leave.

at dusk my first line got wet and it was a steady stream of fish of from there on in . with a lot of non hook ups and rig changing, to find the most efficient, I landed 7 legal flathead smallest being 41cm.

the last of which gave a little knock, so i paused waited, and waited....and then boom! it shot off on a short but sharp initial run, im think ahh nice salmon. so i turn its head and it swims fast at me, im like ahhhh nice flat head, then stops turns and takes another few runs and even comes to the surface, so im thinking what??? if this is a flathead its going to be a pb for sure! and sure enough after an awesome fight in the surf this whopping 68cm croc rocks up at my feet! im stoked! i never expected to get my pb flathead off the beach!

so pleased with recent success ive been having with the flathead, im developing quite a taste for them!

  4. So after a after a couple weeks where the tide hadnt been in my favor, i finally managed to get down to the beach for night time session with the incoming tide. the swell was extremely low at Bondi, but there was just enough to spot where the gutters were.

rigged up with whole pilchards intending to catch salmon and tailor as usual, but this time around each bite was tap tap tap...tap tap boom, flathead! in 2 years of fishing eastern suburb beaches ive never caught a legal flathead from the beach, plenty of undersized ones but never legal. and last night i bagged 4 beauties! biggest approx. approx. 55cm.

And the fact that it wasnt just one random or 2 coincidental legal flatties but 4, i reckon the clam conditions coupled with the full moon brought them in. an i aint complaining, happy days :)

  5. What an effort! congrats, ive been trying for a legal king this year with metals and fresh caught squid strips, but biggest ive had was 58. i have issues trying to find an area close to my spot to get livies! how deep under the float to you sit your livey and what did you burley up with?

    cheers gilbey

  6. Hey Raiders!

Got to love this site and the raider spirit! the responses to so many reports including my own is awesome, but i have always made reports about the same few fish caught from shore and i now i really want to spice it up a bit make some exciting reports and friends from on the water!

so my question is, are there any raiders out there who can help a man out and take me out on their boat to help fufill my quest :)

ive been getting stuck into some rat kings this year but would love to nail a legal one. ive mainly been fishing of the stones and beaches catching salmon, tailor, bonnies and trevs, and if the surfs up i hit the harbour in search of blackfish. but i still have that burning desire for water time.

I have been on boats before, and dont get sea sick. im a good humored 24 yr old whose a mad keen fisherman, and would really appreciate an opportunity.

so yeah, would love to hear from ya raiders!

    cheers

    Gilbey

  7. yeah we did thanks mate, you know when you desperately try and squeeze in a fishing session and your window of opportunity gets smaller and smaller the nearer the time comes, well that happened big time on wknd, we planned a 4 hour session then due to traffic and work we only had and hour and a half once we got there. but with action like we had, i am most certainly not complaining.

Mate, you can't tease us with a report like this and not give us a hint of the location :bleh:

    Eastern suburbs boys.

  8. those days are rare indeed. been a while for myself.

You must have had a ball !

  9. So hit up the rocks at the wknd and managed to squeeze in a an hour and a half of fishing. from the moment we arrived it was action everywhere,

the salmon were thick and the kings were below them. only rats landed so none kept but the action was intense. all the salmon landed were

extremely healthy and fat fish with their bellies filled to brim with baby slimies. All fish caught on metal slices.

all these baitfish were from the one fish! incredible. the thing wouldn't of been eating for days after this gorging surely!

  10. I just bought like 5 Halco lures ;)

Looks like a nasty spot. I guess a no no for Southerly swells?

the spot is fishable in most swell conditions actually, because you can get up out of the way of the water, the trouble comes when you actually want to land a sizable fish, it could get really dodgey in a big swell.

  11. Looks like a dangerous spot..how was it to fish?

Hood on ya though, I am seeking my first king this yr or early 2013 so I might take a lesson from you and get up early in the am.

    Nice fish

haha yes mate do it, iv been chasing them for a while now, and sunday was the first time i had had tried first light, and what a result! i think i may be getting up early more often!

Well done  Did u eat him or let him go?? What lure weremu useing

lived to fight another day! he deserved it!
