  1. Hi.

B4 you kook at the price.

Look at what fishing you going to\want to do.

Then assess what boat size\type is needed to SAFELY do that. in your area. in your sea conditions.

If you HAVE the dollars in your pocket (Not borrowing./) and where you want to be in life. Go for it.

ANy boat in your minds range.

    If you have to borrow.

Well. Myself. I'd join a local club. See what they use. AND WHY they use them.

    and get one to suit.

A second hand 3 to 5 yr old Probably tinne AIn't much different to a new one nowadays. Unless it been thrashed.

and a lot cheaper than new with extra's on it.

My first fishing boat in this country was a stacer 4.2 with 30 Johnno on back. Had for tenish yrs.

Next one was a SeaJay 4.5m. with 75 Merc. also ten yrs or so.

This last one is an '02 Stacer 5.25 Bow Rider first with 75 Merc. Now a 90 Opti Again Merc.

That'll probably be my last I'm 72 now. and all through those yrs I've also had Ocean Yachts. 34 ft and 42 ft. Both steel.

    In this country.

Others in other country's prior to '73 when I arived here.

My son (eldest) 47yrs. has the boat Still that I bought for him for his 20-th B.Day.

5 mtr tinny third engine, Again an Opti.

They last forever. Find one size\type to suit you and just keep rebuilding trailers and updating motors.

I just rebuilt my trlr last yr. '02, same yr as boat. Them with my rooftopper 2.75 and Yammie 15 will see me out.

Last yacht I sold 5 yrs ago (crook knees).

Buy a boat to suit your area and type of fishing you do. rather than price point.

  2. Hi.

If you want a neat job. Buy a set of good hole punches. Or just the ones you need.

Set up on a block of hardwood and cut perfect circle every time. Inside and out.

I actually use an adjustable Plier type hand punch for the centres. Cut the outer circle first.

easier to locate centre for inner hole then.

  3. Hi.

Can't help you with eggbeater sticks I only use proper reels for fishing.

Basically a cheap one will cost in the $200 range. Mid range to $500ish.

top line from $600 to well over a grand..

$350ish will buy a rod that will do 97% of your jigging. But you WILL end up with several line classes

Go composite and Parabolic Action for comfort and less stress.(knocking it about)

  4. Hi.

I had the Torium 30 and Saltist 30 high and low speeds.

I've till got the Saltist 4.9. The Torium is long gone.

When trying to grindin a fish from deep

the Saltist had more that twice the winding power the Torium did.

Plus though painted it didn't have plastic side plates like the Torium either.

Regarding A\R bearing. Remove clean out and lube with light oil Sparingly. You'll have no more trouble with it.

Saltist drag improved when you drop Carbontex or Smoothies in there too.Even my Saltiga's benefitted from it.

  5. Hi.

    What fish\size first.

    I got 150 rod. Accurate 870. 250 rod Daiwa saltiga 30. 350 rod Saltiga 40 and a custom rod around 450 with either the Saltiga 50 lever 2spd. or a penn torque300.

A rig around the 250 will do 90% of jigging.

    Accurate 500. Saltist\Saltiga 30. Penn torque200. or a cheapie AVET MXJ.All will do a good job. Prices vary.but the 200 Torque on sellout I bought 2..

Eggbeaters. Dunno. they toys.. 6lb and under in my eyes.

  6. No.

But if you go and look on Ebay.

I got my fish shaped 6 and 8lb Painted last yr for around $24\25 each They a 1000 times better than the round cannon balls. and you can bend ém slightly to make them travel öut" when you running a pr.

  7. Hi.

If I was going Jigging. I'd keep the reel if it's a reasonable one. Around 4.9\5.2 to 1 with a decent drag.(you can upgrade that)

and change the rod. 7ft is a popper stick not jig stick.

I have around 5 or 6 jiggers. all below 6ft. 5 ft 6in even better.A decent PARABOLIC jig stick will make your jigging enjoyable

But you do need to get fit.

Try to borrow one first and try jigging. It's a love hate relationship. Bloody hard work regardless

. But done properly with decent mid range geat an enjoyable days fishing.

I do Outrigger canoeing in the surf for my fitness 6 blokes one canoe. Plus push bike and dumbells.

Oh I'm 70 so age is no barrier. but fitness makes ALL the difference to a good day and Oh Shit. I won't do that again.

And don't forget to use a hand grip spring unit. If you can't hold the rod you can't catch a fish.

Watch how many keep swapping hands. flexing fingers. and just lean back having a rest.

Get fit. Good grip. and you won't be one of them.

  8. Hi.

I've got a Cannon now. Use in deep dams and Spanno trolling.

Prior to. For yrs. First a Paravane. Then a 6in Alvey. on a short butt section (Bent butt game stick butt I had.

with a bit on end with a tip roller Works real well. I find the Fish shaped bombs are best. I made a mould for 6 and 8 lb

After buying some on net fairly cheap ($25\35)

The lighter ones drift back when trolling and you can't see them in sounder. When You can see what depth they are then you can add depth of whatever lure to that

Helps keep ém in fish's zone.

  9. Hi.

We got a Quinnie 3.75 Dart. with Yammie 15 2 stroke 100.1 fuel mix.

Flies with one or two on board. fairly clean running at 100.1 Cheap to buy and maintain\repair. Lighter than 4 str.

I'd buy another one tomorrow. All I do for slow trolling spinning for Barra etc. Is use my $350 electric on transom.

Better than just a motor 4str or otherwise.

and the pr together. Cost a lot less than any 4 str.

I use mine mainly Darwin Harbour and Barra dams on way up there and back. 25ltr tank. Used every day.

Can not empty in a weeks running\trolling.

These efficient 2 strokes will live for a long time yet.

I've got an Opti 90 on my Stacer Bowrider. Wouldn't have a 4 str on my boats. The twoéys are much more reliable.

cheaper to run and a little cheaper to buy.

Also look at all those moving little bits in a 4 str. Spinning at a zillion miles a second. No thank's.

  10. Hi.

I've got a coupla Stormy seas inflatable jackets. Ocean rated. from my Offshore sailing days.

Designed for pro fishermen. Had ém for yrs. service. basically. is manual inflate with mouthpiece every 12 months. Submerge to check for leaks. then leave up for 48hrs to see if they go soft.

With the Stormy's there is a coloured little tab you replace and a label where you print date of service.

With the 24\30gram cylinders. As long as there's no corrosion and they weigh the correct weight.. They good for around 6 yrs.

So I'm told from Q'Lqng Dep't of fisheries. Just a new tab in there. and dated.

Otherwise swap it out. (Around $33 each.) I get mine posted straight from Tassie.

Normal life jackets are in boat too. But only mainly as cushions. and if coast guard get picky on inflatables.

I wear my jacket most of time. Always at night.and as soon as they see the Stormy jackets they normally say OK..

They are concidered the best. and safest on market..

  11. Hi.

I use right foot for the loop. After twists. (41\44)Then Finger in loop. Slide up till twists tight and close up.

Lead tail back over top twists and release tail slowly feeding it in parallel spirals. Side by side. to bottom.

Separate the two legs. Half hitch on each. tighten.

Then do a 3 or 4 turn Uni below that. drawing it UP to bottom of knot.

I've been doing that knot since b4 u was born.(old fart) Never let me down yet.

Do that on your braid and plait on Nylon. You not have any problems.

Most important thing. On both of them. Is to draw\coil ém tight. With the plait. tighten EVERY tuck. don't leave it for a couple.

then try to. It won't work. EVERY tuck...

If they right. They'll curl up like a banana. Nicely curved. Then you know you got it right..

And don't make loop too long. keep ém short and make up stronger end length of line with the leader to suit.Doubles only suited to game fishing...

    (More to go wrong)

I normally use Jerry Brown hollow, or kevlar (toothies) for leaders now. To form the loop end. Nylon behind it, strength\length to suit.

Carry several of different strengths\lengths. then with loop to loop. Quick easy change over to suit. and no cutting\tieing..

  12. Hi.

I've tried Nylon 0n my baitcasters.

Problem is. with the smaller ones. You have no real line capacity.

Braid gives you the extra capacity for peace of mind. while holding stronger lane at same time.

Just have a bimini double on the end of.

And like Me. Carry several at same time. all leadered and lured to suit that day. Normally 3 or 4.

Otherwise just the one. and having the end loop with line strength to suit that reel.

Add whatever leader you need to suit that moments or type of fishing... 99% Barra up here. Then Barra as a backup.

Normally 30lb. with 50 and 80lb in the sticks (Read big trees) and 50 to 200lb leaders to suit.

  13. Hmmmm.

    Nobody much interested.

Basically what you have in the water will. At some time catch a fish. Sooner or later.(There you go. Is that definitive enuff for u...)

It's more important to run different levels. distances for turning. and try to keep a heavy duty rig in the tail end of prop wash.

Colours are more for water type. Depth run. and what turns YOU on. Fish couldn't give a rats arse basically.

  14. Hi.

    Similar over the yrs.

Bimini on Braid. Plait on Nylon. crimps on the heavy nylon.

Only doubles I ever do nowadays are short ones for joins. Braid\Nylon and Braid to Leaders with Kevlar\hollow leads.

Nylon on all surface trolling. and basically Braid for all bottom fishing. Plus Barra in the dams.

We've found that when trolling braid. apart from zero stretch and a lot of hooks pulling.

If you have several lines out. Strike. lines cross while trying to reel in spare ones.. Zip. no fish. Bloody frustrating.

Specially with the price of lure heads nowadays.

  15. Hi All,

I have done 39 trips out for not a single King - hence I need some serious help...

I'll give you an example of a typical day out then you might be abel to tell me what i'm doing wrong!

    1) Early/mid morning start - 4-9am typically - bait collection. Squid (if I can get), yakka, slimey.

    2) Head to markers/MHarbour downrig until bait dies.

    3) Downrig mid harb at around 35-40ft and DR the markers at varying depths until bait gets stolen or dies.

    4) Get frustrated, go home with no fuel and no fish.

    5) Repeat steps 1-4 ad nauseum.

Is there any one who can perhaps provide me some more specific instruction? fishing baits at anchor, floating livies in Mid harb?

    PLease please please!

    Hi.

You got a boat. You got enthusiasm. Learn to read your sounder. Fish the tides. Join a local fishing club. and get to know a few people.

    It'll come.

    See Ya

  16. Sounds like it might of been a big stinga, although i find they usually take off like a rocket when hooked, sluggish feel is a bit odd. Must of had a fair bit of size though, bummer you didn't get to have a decent look at it, so annoying when you don't even know what it is thats doing it to you.

    next time...

Hi Darwin Harbour Off mandorah 2 yrs ago.

Out in rooftopper. (van in mandorah pub) Missus on board. Mate and his other half alongside. Trolling a brand new $30 Swivel back lure. Looks real sexy.

10 minutes into troll. Full roller. 30lb stick. Lever drag reel, 65 lb braid. Rod slowly bends. Damn. Weed.

    Then the weed moves.

Towed me about 3 miles or more. In front. Behind. on top. beside. made no difference.

Full drag. spool slowly ticking over. Boat doing 3 knots on gps. mate beside us. Must have been quite a sight.

Cracked him off b4 he took me under Mandorah jetty. Lemon shark everybody reckons. They get up over 400kg's there. and if it wasn't. it must have been one of the Collins Class Sub's based there. it wasn't slowing down...

and lost my bloody new lure. Bummer..

  17. The Humminbird has a higher pixel count and therefore produces a higher quality picture, I find this helps with bottom recognition and allows be to determine structure better as mariner mentioned. The Humminbird also has a built in resolution map of Australia waters and this allows for a better quality map when you're not utilising a navionics chart.

Bad news, I've been told all Humminbird and Lowrance finders/combos will be having a price increase very shortly, between 10-15%. I think you'll find that Lowrance 527CiDF has been sold out at a lot of places but if you order one you might still be able to get it at the old price.

Mate the best thing to do would be go into a shop and have a play around with both the Lowrance and Humminbird and find the one that suits you best. I find the Humminbird to be a better quality product and has always worked better for me but that is just my personal opinion. I'm sure many people on this site would prefer the lowrance brand.

Anyways mate I hope this helps,

    Bill

    Hi.

If your looking on the bottom for fish. Look at the Furuno.. Only one with true Bottom lock.

You can pick Reefies and Flathead on them...

  18. 50 turn Bimini!?!

    I tie 12-15!

Forget the Albright, use the Cats Paw to a high quality swivel, like a Shogun snap.

2m of leader is heaps, although you will need to get someone to leader the fish.

I personally stick clear of braid when trolling, theres no give in the line and you'll pull plenty of hooks.

I've towed spoons behind yachts for over 50 yrs. All over the world. Forget that lot.

You in there for the meat. 99% spanno's and Tuna. BIG Ones mainly..Mixed with the occasional Cobe.

Get yourself a 200lb handline spool. Some single strand wire 80 to 120lb bs. and a couple of push bike tubes, or Occy straps..

Use your lures. But I always had a 6 or 7 in spoon hanging of the back. Interchanged with a large red/white, jug head feather

use 8.0 suicides or Circle hooks.

Drop it back. Then just watch Tube/Occy. When it's long. There's weed or a fish on. Have a hacksaw for cutting Spanno's into steaks. and a spike. or big hammer to brain them with.

    Enjoy.
