  1. Hi all

I have a friend who fishes often and is very competent but always complains that when the river is not fishing well that cold deoxygenated water has been released from the Woronora Dam. I'm not convinced and just keep fishing.

Does anyone know if water is ever released and if so any details about it because I fail to see how any water if any at all is released as many parts of the river at low tide are almost impassable due to silting / sandbars and I've never seen any evidence of released water.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Gday there.

ive got a few young ones that come fishing with me and the Woronora is a great place for a few fish with the kids.

I always take the kids down mainbar to pump nippers and the kids never want to come home they are having that much fun.

    Cheers

  3. Gday all

Just thought I'd share a bit about a charter I went on last week.

Jumped on charter last Sunday with a couple of mates after it was cancelled a few weeks ago due to the huge ECL week, the forecast wasn't great and we weren't filled with confidence anyway due to seas still being brown, when I asked the deckhand " how's the weather looking " he looked at me puzzled and replayed " I dunno I just lied to get this job ".

The bloke had no idea and this was proven when halfway out through to Sydney Heads we had to turn around to pick up 2 people from The Opera House steps they had forgot about.

Deckie and Captain never spoke to anyone except when the Deckie asked us " how do I cut up bait, I don't even know what this bait is "

What followed was 6 hours of wasted money.

20 people fishing deep sea and every drop was a mass of tangled lines, half the spools were only half full, the gear was rusted and terrible, the toilet water and sink water flowed into the floor of the toilet due to broken pipes, the bait was rotten, the service was terrible and after 6 hours deep sea fishing with 20 onboard fishing 4 flathead were raised and only 2 were legal.

So I guess the moto of the story is go with a tried and trusted local even if it costs a bit more.

I've done charters all over Oz and this was the absolute worst by along shot.

  4. Gday

My current boat is a 3.85m Quintrex explorer with 15hp. I've fitted casting decks and all bells and whistles to it and I love it.

Perfect for 2 people in an estuary and it cost me $5000.

I can launch by myself in any situation, fits in my garage, doesn't chew petrol.

My mates who have much bigger vessels actually prefer to come out on mine as it's cheaper and more practical for fishing.

  5. Gday

I stay at plantation island because it's great for the kids and wife and have been on numerous trips out of their.

I recommend going with a guide and not a hotel option as the guides know what they are doing as opposed to the hotel option of taking tourists out.

My guide had Shimano rod and reels with all the knowledge where as a trip I did with a hotel guy gave me a hand line.

I Caught yellow fin wahoo GT and Spanish mackerel with the guide but caught baby reef fish with the hotel guys.

  6. After no fishin for 2 weeks I decided to have a quick fish yesterday down the Wonni for flatties and got 7 nice ones biggest going 60cm,

I was using plastics for an hour but couldn't get a touch so swapped to some bright coloured vibes and got them all on that.

Really didn't expect to catch anything as the water was like mud so I was pretty happy but didn't manage to get a photo.

  7. Gday

I've been taking my little fella out on the tinny for almost 2 years now and he just turned 5.

Usually fish the woronora and he bloody loves it.

I got him interested for the first 6 or so trips by hooking up on bream, flatties ect myself and then free spooling giving him the rod and then flipping the bail arm and asking him if he got anything.

It worked a treat and making it fun by having a picnic and stuff definitely helps big time

  8. Gday all

There were also dolphins spotted in the woronora a number of days ago.

Almost up towards the footbridge I believe.

I saw a few photos of it the other day. Having swam and fished in the Wonnie for 30 odd years I can honestly say that's the first time I've heard of them up that far.

  9. So I went for a flick today with the serviced motor and am pretty annoyed.

Took me 10 mins to start the engine, when I finally got it started it coughed and spluttered, when I accelerated slightly it cut out, when I accelerated again it sped up and decelerated without me touching the throttle, this went on for 5 mins, when I finally got it to a few knots it kept cutting out and then died altogether. When I finally made it 100m from the ramp steam was bellowing from the engine from what I can only guess was excess oil burning off that was covering the whole motor. Had to get towed back to boat ramp with an engine that wouldn't start. Also noticed when I pulled the cover off a bunch of screws that were just sitting next to the motor.

I've never had a problem with this motor ever, never cut out, never not started first time, never stalled.

Wasn't happy with the labour costs or their customer service and can't wait to tell them on Monday when they open.

  10. Hi All

Purchased some new plastics from a well known site the other day whilst bored and browsing "soft plastic lures"

Tried them out on the weekend in the Georges and did quite well on the flatties which were my intended target.

Biggest went 75cm with a heap around 50cm. All went back to live another day.

As soon as I saw this plastic I was amazed at its life like look and knew it had to work, not often I buy off sites but these were a must especially with the foil in the guts which I reckon is awesome. I reckon these are on par with the best plastics I've ever used.

Anyone seen anything like these before?

They are from a bloke in Sth Oz.

Also got absolutely violently smoked by what I reckon to be a big Jew, I landed my fair share of Jews and this Jew? I had not a chance of landing it, it bite me off and left my hands shaking in disbelief, it was a violent run and I wish I at least got to view it.

  11. Gday again and the breakdown is as follows and any guidance would help as I'm pretty green with this stuff.

$363.00 for labour. Labour total was 3 hours.

    $141.75 for the following

    Replace Thermostat and Gasket

    Replace Impeller

    Replace Sparkplugs

Replace missing water scope on leg

    Repair trim

    Grease up all components.

    I have not included GST.

As a sales rep but a novice and know nothing boater I'm just curious what others think.

    Cheers in advance

  12. Thanks for that info, I was thinking it was pretty expensive. The plastic piece that broke effected the ability to change from neutral to forward or reverse, it is tiny and my guess is that it would cost 50 cents max.

Oh well learned my lesson and will have to find another place next time.

    Thanks

  13. Hi all just curious about the price of a standard service on a Johnson 15hp, had to get a small plastic piece on it replaced, not sure of the piece name but the piece was no bigger than my thump nail and appeared easy sought to replace. was hit with a price just under $600, motor ran fine prior to service just wanted to give it the once over. Any thoughts ?

  14. Took my almost 5 yo out for a fish down the Wonnie today and burlyed up with breadcrumbs mixed with canned tuna for a good 15 mins before casting out and some tiny prawn pieces on some lightly weighted gear and in 1hr he pulled 8 small bream biggest went 28cm, 2 baby tailor and a sml flattie that went 15cm Darn he out fished my last few sessions.

It was so cool to see him smiling and pulling fish after fish.

I love to catch fish but so cool to watch him get a few.

  15. In my experience it's more the action of the plastic, so as long as it's coming into contact with the bottom I'm catching flatties.

I've used scents for a while now and am still not 100% convinced they make a difference but while it comes in the packet I'll keep using it.
