  1. Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the late reply (I've just finished a week of night shifts)

Antony thanks for the generous offer but if I go down the hydrofoil path I'll get ones designed for my  motor, thanks again.

I've been running smart tabs. Had a look at them yesterday and realised the shocks had broken. I've replaced them and going to go out tomorrow to give them a run. 1.5 m swell with 6 second period should give me some idea if it's improved.

Rick I have a 4 blade 17 solas prop so I think I'm on the right path there. I've only had a tiller steer tinny up to 3 years ago so still learning.

Plethora I've had a lot of people tell me exactly what you said...that's why I'm a bit confused.

John thanks for the video it gives me a better idea of how to use them properly, Quick question I think both of the boats you mentioned carry the v hull through to the back where mine flattens out. Does this make a difference to maintaining plane speed in slop?19664.thumb.jpeg.ab3b5f52c2c94e40b26a38e8af8ce575.jpeg

  2. I have a 5.3m Haines prowler with a 115 Yammy 4 stroke. It's a little heavy in the arse end and when the sea is sloppy it can get bogged down under 15 knots.

I'm considering buying a hydrofoil. I was wondering if anyone else had gone down a similar path and if it improved performance.

  3. Do you know how deep you're going to be fishing? If the current is up and the fish are holding down low you might need some heavier jigs.

Also don't be afraid of using the jigs when you're targeting the snapper

  4. Once again thanks for the info.

I'm going to give the funnel one a go. Sounds like all things fishing trial and error  (hopefully not too much error) is the way to go.

    Thanks

    Costa

  5. Thanks for all the advice guys..I'mglad I asked.

Final question. When tying off the bow how much rope do you let out and os the aim to have the boat at 45 degrees to the drift or do you have the drogue under the boat?

The size recommended for you boat and placement plays a large factor in effectiveness. If not used correctly you can easily get into strife.

When I used a mates I had it placed directly behind the motor. Is that correct. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

I have two a large parachute type one that's probably over 30 years old and a smaller funnel shaped one made out of tarp material or similar.

I much prefer the parachute material it rolls up into something around the size of your fist and really slows the drift.

I am considering getting a smaller parachute one to replace the funnel one.

You are welcome to borrow mine if you like to try them.

Thanks for the offer it's really kind. I've seen the funnel ones for sale around the $30 mark so they're not very expensive.

I guess my question is do the funnel ones actually make a difference to your drift speed or should I just bite the bullet and by a parachute

  8. I'm looking at buying a sea anchor and trying to choose between the funnel shape or parachute type. I'm leaning towards the funnel shape (approx. $200 cheaper). Does anyone use them and do they work or does the old adage ring true 'You get what you pay for'

  9. I've fished a patternoster style rig for snapper using an occy jig style lure as the 'sinker' and a 5 or 7 inch plastic above on a weedless hook using 20lb leader. I put the rod in the rod holder and let the swell do the work. It definitely works.

  10. The lagoon tends to go a bit quiet with all the people and stand up paddle boarders over the school holidays. If you're determined you can walk over to the northern side during low tide and fish the channel for bream, trevally, flathead and possibly whiting. Pump nippers if you can otherwise any of the usual baits.

The beach fishes like most beaches. The gutters near the little island normally work best for salmon and tailor. I normally use strips of squid

I get away with 8 and have never had one let go

What do you think the half hitches actually do. As far as I can tell their only purpose after the initial locking of the knot is to keep the line straight. Any thoughts?

  12. I'vebeen using the FG knot for many years now. I used to finish it with around 20 pairs of half hitches. As I  get older (and lazier) I've dropped that down to 10.

My question is is there any reason to tie all those half hitches as the strength of tbe knot comes from the wraps biting into the leader? I'd also be interested to know how many half hitches others tie?

hello COS, is it off the boat or landbased? and where about is the north head of botany bay, couldn't locate on the map, if culd help. thanks

    Hey mate

It was off a boat trolling rapala red heads on Wednesday. Couldn't get the lures in fast enough. I didn't try the Kurnell side but if you're land based I'd imagine they'd be on that side also

    1) Blue bottles stick to braid like super glue which will give you no amount of grief on a beach at night when you handle your line even though you cant see a blue bottle attached to it.

    2) When using braid every movement of your rod tip means a similar amount of movement of your sinker, so unless you bury a grapnel sinker your bait and sinker will at some stage end up out of the fishing zone and back on the beach.

    3) As you get a fish closer to the beach there is less give in the system so you'd better remember to back the drag off to sop the fish from throwing the hook.

    4) Even top quality 8 strand braid isn't very abrasion resistant

    Hi Crossfire

Thanks for the info about mono.

I've only been beach fishing for a couple of years so I was genuinely interested.

I haven't had any problems with abrasion resistance (same braid for the last two years).I have noticed the sinker letting go when there is a lot of water movement and definitely had problems with blue bottles. Looks like I'm going to have to give mono a go and compare the difference.
