  1. hey mate,

i've got the Salina 2 10000 which I use occasionally from the boat for livebaiting and predominantly for chasing jewies off the breakwall. I've got 80lb rovex viros braid on it (mainly for a bit of extra abrasion resistance off the wall) and it puts out tonnes of pressure. Easily knocked over jew to 13kg and managed to get an estimated 8ft nurse shark boatside from 30m of water.

I love the reel and the lifetime garuntee provides peace of mind.

The main reason i'm posting is that I've just seen an online tackle shop in Adelaide has the Salina 3's at about $100 discount at the moment. I just ordered the SA3 5000 for $159. I hope it's not a glitch in their system!!!

******confirmed- ray and ... have the salina SA3 10000 for $169. get it!

    Cheers

Thanks for the reply It an extra fast rod. My mistake. Please see pic it has details for the rod

hey mate, i've got a force lite 7'3 12-25lb, and agree- they are a little noodlish. they are designed that way to prevent pulled hooks on braid. I've got a similarly rated berkely venom cobra 7-12 kg matched to a 5000fj 20lb braid-it is quite tippy, bending significantly through the top third before really loading up to its full potential. I got the cobra from the online store at coffs more then half price at the moment- it is a classy rod, but 6 inches shorter then what you are replacing.

    good luck

  3. hey mack attack- have you settled on a combo yet?

I can vouch for the 3000 stradic fj being perfect for this job. I've got one matched to a loomis forcelite 12-25lb 7'3. I'm not sure whether this would be too long a rod for a kayak, but it is good from a boat and also the breakwall i fish. the rod might be hard to track down, but i got it early this year marked down from 470 to 290. it has a medium action as it is designed for braid, but i have found it a lovely match up

    good luck!

  4. hey mate,

can't comment on JB, but st georges basin (around the corner) was fishing pretty well for pannies, big flatties and bream last week. if the weather does turn sour, the basin seemed pretty sheltered.

we scored at least 3 or 4 legal reds each day; flatties to 80cm (lost bigger) and solid bream.

    beautiful place! have fun

    cheers

  5. Ballooning at anchor - the wife pulled it up and drove the boat to chase the fish!

In Southern waters, the longtails tend to be a little skittish and so much harder to catch if you have your motor running (which generally rules out slow trolling).

I have managed a couple on slugs in the Bay at Port Stephens, but these require loooong casts and light tackle (3 years ago I hooked one on 4KG spinning outfit, fought it for 1 hour 40 minutes, had it circling the boat for 10 minutes, then the hook straightened :ranting2: )

    thanks for the useful tips!

you'd be pretty bummed straightening hooks on light tackle!

hopefully I can report back with similar success from up here

    Cheers

  6. 18th was spent chasing Cobia first one went 15kg second was estimated at 18kg but we only got 5 kilos, thanks to very large tiger shark.

    Hey Bruce,

A bit old now but, had Tuesday 13/03 off and did the red eye special leaving Forster at 3 am, catching livies near the jail grounds at around 6.15. Can't remember the tide at that time, but there wasn't much water on the bar- a little hairy. Caught stacks of yakkas and around 15 slimies. Just leaving to slow troll for something big the throttle cable snapped leaving us with 16knots or nothing!! :ranting2:

No slow trolling possible, we anchored at grassy head for a single spotty around 4 or 5kg and I blooded my new terez rod on a 5ft (est) tiger shark. We saw one boat at the ramp cleaning a really good bag of spotties.

Hope you have better luck then us!

    Cheers

  7. hey scottyB,

i've used the penotrate 5/0 circles. i really like them. they are sharp and quite a heavy gauge. i'm guessing you saw them advertised with the guys that distribute hairy back hooks?? i find them an excellent alternative to the much much(!) more expensive brands.

    buy with confidence, i reckon

    cheers

  8. Cheers Tom ... good luck at SWR - find the bait stay with it & have one livey on the surface & 1 sunk into the bait and slow troll them.

Let us know how you go!

    Cheers

    Damo

that was the plan we had!! after a perfect start getting plenty of tasty slimies the clutch or gear box packed it in... we were left with neutral or once in gear were stuck at about 14 knots- made for an interesting time getting the boat onto the trailer!! swapped our livies for a screwdriver with a friendly fisho. who'd own a boat?! makes you wanna go on a charter!!

we did anchor up at grassy head and floatlined pillies for 5kg spotted mackeral to my mate and a 5ft tiger shark for me- that was fun on my spin gear!

    thanks for the tips!

    cheers

  9. congrats on the LEGAL, and therefore fishraider acceptable, catch!!

wish i could find some locally here in forster. got a hold of some off the back of a trawler recently and used fresh it nailed a jew and a few big tailor.

what sort of jig were you using?

    cheers

  10. the lowest terez which is 5 to 10kg is an awesome rod have look into that its around the 200 dollar mark aswell probably slightly more but worth it.

picking up a terez tomorrow- awesome rods! only thing is, my local tackle guy kept telling me terez are designed for casting lures, not so much bait fishing. they are also designed for use with braid/powerpro- not mono. are you going to be using braid or mono with the baitrunner? if mono, i really like the action of The Shimano Tcurve revolution offshore 701sw spin fishing rod ... a 1 piece fishing rod measuring 2.13 metres in length with a fishing line rating of 6-12kg goes for around $170-190

lots of grunt for jewies, maybe an overkill for flatties- it is 1 piece, sorry.

EDIT- comes in 2 peice model 702SW rated 5-10kg. could be the goods and i've seen it advertised for $169.

I have a baitrunner 4500 with a spool filled with 8kg mono, and a spool with 30lb powerpro- i find the baitrunner function seems to operate better using the mono spool. used it just the other night to catch a neat 4kg jewie off our breakwall.

    good luck,

    tom

  11. Well done dunc, looks like you smashed em!

Good work on the release- circles are a great invention! I caught a 4ft bronzie on monday but was using wire and a big suicide which ended up in his stomach... thankfully he was put to good use- very tasty indeed.

Will have to try circles- what leader did you use?

    Cheers

    Tom

  12. good effort on the kings!

I just love that second photo showing your busted pluggers!! Those kings must have pulled pretty hard to bust your thongs! :1prop:

Did you send the big squid down live? or keep it for strips or dinner?

    Cheers

  13. 30lb braid, 30lb flouro leader, on my 4000 Hyper custom Certate mated to a 10ft Xzoga mastery. It performed remarkably. it would have to be one of my favorite outfits

hey dan, sweet fish! got me fired up to hit the wall again with some placcies and possibly some big hard bodies.

Very interested in the xzoga range of rods. thinking of matching my 5000fj stradic to either the 10ft or 8ft heavy xzoga running 20-30lb braid for lure tossing.

WHERE DO YOU GET THESE RODS IN AUS?? THEY'RE ON online shop FOR A GOOD PRICE, BUT DO YOU KNOW IF THEY CAN BE PURCHASED LOCALLY?

    Again, Top Fish

    Cheers

    Tom.

  14. sydney snapper are starting to resemble those from SA! top catch. when you say snapper snatcher style rig, is it a pre rigged deal? i've been using hairy back hooks rigged at about $2.80 each. they go well

    cheers

    tom

  15. congrats to your missus on the two jewies! excellent work. And well done for getting her out on the water and getting her hooked up. she'd have my vote for cotm at the moment!

    cheers
