  1. DPIPWE Tasmania

The southern bluespotted flathead has a lighter sandy brown body with scattered small blue to white spots intermingled with dark blotches. The tail fin has dark spots surrounded by white. This species of flathead can grow up to 90 centimetres and weigh up to 8 kilograms.

Some authorities say the Eastern classification is no longer valid as there are 2 species being Northern and Southern.

    Great fish, well done

  2. went to the boat show on saturday and bought a few squid jigs (Shimano Zephia range: 3 for $20!!) - bargain i'd say...

anyway converted to 5 green eyes at north botany heads

here's a pic of the 2 smaller model. I gave the rest away.

VERY nice, they would have been tasty!

  3. Hey Raiders! It's been a while since I've been around these parts, unfortunately fishing has had to take the back seat recently.

However, I've got a trip planned to go to NZ in July and was just wondering if you guys had any advice about charters or knowledge in general about fishing the east coast of the North Island. I'll be flying into Auckland and will have a few days to check out the North east coast, I don't have any plans set in concrete yet so i'm very open to Ideas!

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

    Tight lines!

    Joel

Hi Joel, there is some magnificent Trout fishing at Lake Tarawera east of Rotorua, you will need a guide but it's worth it as those fish are thunpers. The lakes near Rotorua hold fish too but there only small. Try Tauranga on the east coast as well.

    cheers

  4. Hey mate , hmm I might head out port hacking tonigh just landbased to see if I can get some squid n might bring the Jew rod out n see if I can hook onto one !! Been a couple of months since I had some fun with a Jew !!

More then welcome to tag along mate !!

    Cheers,

    Jez

Good luck Jez, let us know how you get on.

    cheers

  5. Hey Nate how u doing man !!

Yeah I'm keen for a harbour session this weekend !

You interested in coming along man ?

Let me know n we go from there

Jewfish is on the ball mate, during winter I fish the shallows around the tide change in the Bay catching some good Bream. A good standby bait when their finicky is Chicken marinated in garlic, don't know why but they love it, I also burley using chicken pellets & tinned tuna. Keep plugging away mate!

    cheers

  6. G'Day Raiders,

As the title describes I need some help with fishing.

Basically in the last 5-6 sessions on the boat, actually every session on the boat, has been horrid.

No good fish to show for it. So Im basically asking if anyone is keen to help me out.

I mainly fish the georges river as its my local and can get there fairly quickly and easily.

Ive been fishing with peeled prawns for bream and whiting, fresh squid and frozen squid for jew and if possible i try and get live mullet for bait, but that usually goes pear shaped and end up with zeros in the poddy trap.

Id also love to learn to fish for blackies in the georges as its prime time for these guys at the moment. I have had good success in the georges before (bream and jew) but its been a very long time since ive had a decent session.

The main thing is I just got a boat and basically dont know where to fish, so me and my brother just sound around and fish countless spots.

Sometimes we even end up down in Botany cause we have travelled that far. We go off what we know from fishing shows (trust me i watch heaps). Like all the different structure and drop offs and holes

but yet we seem to fail. I have done so much better fishing landbased than on our new boat which kinda sux as we got the boat thinkin our fishing should be a lot better now.

So the plea goes out to our fishraider mates to see if they can help out a fisho in need.

    Cheers in advanced guys,

    Jez

Don't blame the boat Jez it's an asset! Can't help you with the Georges I mainly fish the Bay but I do know that fresh bait is the key to success. Don't despair because there are plenty of guy's that fish the Georges and I'm sure you will get plenty of good sound advice. I'm sure we will be reading about your PB's soon.

    Cheers

    Daniel

  7. Met up with Luderick_Angler (Royce)for our usual breakfast & coffee

then we were off to meet Hawkesbass (Trev) & Royce's mate Reg at

our chosen spot on the harbour. Armed with some top weed we were

in with a chance of getting some good fish & we weren't dissapointed.

With a handfull of burly thrown in Reg gets nailed on his first

drift. After a good fight he was in the bag. From then on it was

fish after fish coming in with some fish reaching the 43cm mark

landed by the boys. At the end of our session we had 21 fish in

the bag & about 20 that were either dropped or busted off between

us with a couple of stonkers that would have went over the 45cm mark.

It was then back to Royce's place for a couple of beers & some smoked

blackie fillets that Royce had done on the barbie & reflect over our

    top day of fishing.

    Cheers

    Paul

Now thats a good day, well done

  8. Well, I actually spoke to the fisheries scientist behind the Quibray Bay closure. He said he once tagged 400 flathead in Quibray Bay! He told me though he doesn't think the closure does all that much in terms of fishery wide (ie Botany Bay) benifits.

PS: In a lot of these cases no-one knows where these 'prime breeding grounds' are, or they change from year to year. Closed season are probably a better measure if you want to protect breeding fish. And then again there are plenty of sustainable fisheries built on targeting breeding fish. Often its the only time when they are concentrated enough to warrant commercial fishing. The trick is of course not to overdo the fishing effort.

Done, just a word on the "Greens", look how they stuffed up Tasmania and their economy!

  9. I've fished both & never caught more than a few throw back baby bream & chopper Tailer however , I have heard Wallaga lake can be productive at times so it's worth a try especially around the entrance.

If your only looking for enclosed waters then try the lakes on the western side of the Narooma bridge.

It may be worth the 35min drive from Wallaga to Narooma.

There is no bar at Bermi so , depending on your boat size & the weather heading a short distance offshore or down the coast could be considered.

It' worth a visit to the servo opposite the river boat ramp (just over the bridge on the right). They have all the latest information.

    Geoff

Thanks Geoff, Will be fishing the lakes as the mrs doesn't like the open water, will give Narooma a go too. Thanks for your info.

    Cheers, Daniel

  10. Hi all,

Going down to Wallaga lake in earlly September for a bit of fishing, never been there before so would be interested in hearing from other members regarding species, bait & fishing spots. Have a boat so might try Bermagui river as well. Would appreciate any snippets of info.

    Cheers

  11. Hi everyone, happy new year to you all.

I am looking at going fishing tomorrow and tossing up between Botany Bay or Port Kembla.

Can anyone tell me what the fishing and crowds have been like on Botany Bay?

Hi, don't know about Port Kembla but I fished Towra Point yesterday morning amongst the sand & weed beds and picked up 5 nice Bream, using peeled prawns, 1 went 35cm. Hope that helps.

    Cheers, Daniel

  12. Hi guys,

My dad and I will be going down to Tasmania for a trout fishing trip with both flies and lures this January. Since I've never been down that way i was wondering if anyone here has done a similar trip and could offer maybe some rivers or lakes that could hold some trout? We haven't booked flights or accommodation yet so any directions will be greatly appreciated. Also any gear tips will be good too. Leader, lures, flies etc.

    Cheers

I lived in Tassie for 13 years (Ulverstone) on the North West Coast; I can tell you categorically that they have one of the best managed restocking systems around. The fishing is exceptional both lake, river & sea, although January is not the best time for the lakes.

You will need to contact the Tassie Fisheries Dept to check on the closure of some lakes. Is your dad ex military by any chance as there is (almost free) accommodation at a couple of good fishing lakes. I found wattle grubs the best bait for Brownies & Rainbows while grasshoppers worked extremely well in the rivers.

There are numerous lakes & rivers to fish in Tassie, how are you travelling around Tassie?

Gear, I have caught some beautiful Trout on cheap & expensive gear, believe it or not I have caught one of my best rainbows on a "Strawberry cream", yes the Allen’s lollies.

Launceston would be a pretty good base although Swansea would give you the best of both worlds.

Let me know if I can help further, oh bye-the-way January can be pretty dam hot in Tassie, be careful as you will end up looking like Lobsters!

    Cheers

  13. I do find it is alot harder on the full moon especially on the flats i tend to go deeper but i normally dont take notice of the tide or moon just as long as there is some wind around and the water is moving im happy

    Cheers

    Pete

Thanks for your comtribution Pete, any tips?

    Cheers

  14. Mate that ramp is picnic point boat shed and is a great ramp to launch at  ...........JUST be careful as it is a very short ramp and your trailer will drop over the slab edge especially on low tide and you can run into dramas or damage to the trailer.

At night there is adequate lighting at the ramp also and you can catch your livies from around the light using berley too :1fishing1::1fishing1::1fishing1:

    chris.

Thanks, any water hazards in that area?

    Cheers
