  1. Damn that Pink Tassie!! :ranting2::biggrin2:

Very well condition Rainbows there with the males all displaying their spawning colours. I noticed you were up the back of Thommos in some of those shots, i normally find that area quite tough. What was the water like up the back? Reason I ask is a lot of the time it's quite ugly looking, a horrid greeny colour and probably why I have found it tough there in the past.

Keep up the great reportss

    Cheers

    Hi Matt,

The water up the back is really quite clean at the back of the dam, it was just so cold with the wind howling straight through.

  2. Hey Stephen,

Great report, good to see Griffo still kicking even only with one leg.

Pitty about the weather mate. Next year has to be good, I possibly wouldn't mind going with you next year I would love to catch up with Allan and have a fish with you guys.

Also a pitty you missed the trip to Thomos with Stewy last week I went up there with the family on Thursday and smashed em. check the post.

    Cheers

  3. Hi Raiders,

After being inspired by Swordy's post on Thomos 2 days ago and not able to make the trip, I was eager to have a shot at those great fish that Thomos has to offer. So on Thursday I headed up the mountains with my wife Vicki, son Jason and his girl friend Henni.

We knew it was going to be cold so we donned our ski suits and it was just as well as when we arrived at first light every puddle of water was frozen solid. We made a brisk walk from the car park to the dam to get our blood circulating. It was a beautiful day with a clear blue sky and stiff freezing cold SW wind :frozen: .

On The water around 7:15am with the sun now shinning but the wind was constant and seamed even colder now we had stopped walking.

With in 10 minutes I had landed 2 small rainbows and dropped another. Jason could not believe Dad had three hook ups to his none, :1yikes: But the day had only just began!

Things went a little quiet for a while then Jason calls I'm on :1fishing1: By the bend in his rod I could see it was a nice fish. He played it to the letter using light drag on his 4 lb braid. He soon landed the fattest rainbow hen I had ever seen measuring 49cm, Jason's first trout.

It was not much longer When Vicki :wife: let out one of her frightening screams followed by #$%@#$ which means I'm on. After a great fight with plenty of long runs a very excited Vicki lands a beautiful 52cm buck rainbow. :1wallbash:

I was starting to feel my first 2 small fish did not even rate in comparison to Jason & Vicki's catch. We were all using pink tassie devils and I was now flicking mine with with great gusto to land a comparable specimen. :fisher:

To my amazment Jason was now into another fine fish, and it was not long before he had another 50cm rainbow on the deck.

Now I was under pressure and Jason was offering me tips on how and where to cast as though he was a pro, Mind you, he now has only ever caught 2 trout and they were just now about an hour apart :074:

Again things go quiet for a while and we move further along the bank to find the next waiting specimine.

My hands and cheeks were numb from the freezing wind but we were having a ball. Henni was not fishing on the day but did perform admirably with handing out hot drinks sandwiches and the best tea cake you could ever ask for. :1clap:

A little more time passes and finally I get the chance to yell I'm on! With a great fight I landed yet another nice rainbow measuring 49cm. Jason was relieved that his fish was still a tad bigger.

We made our way out around 2:30 in the afternoon and were amazed to find the small water puddles were still frozen on the surface brrrrr.

A total of 7 rainbows were landed all on pink tassie devils.

A great day was had by all despite the cold, but hey that's when you catch the best fish. Enjoy the photos.

Cheers Brad, Vick Jason & Henni

  4. Thanks for having me on board Stewy, the donuts certainly were good but some hot coffee to go with them would have been even better.

As Stewy & I discussed on the day, even thought it was a little wet it was better that fishing in blistering hot sun with the flies.

Good luck at Glenbawn in a few weeks Stewy, sorry I can't make the trip this year.

    Cheers

  5. well done guys thats some nice looking fish. would you mind telling me what rod and reel you were using as im after a outfit for throwing lures in the surf.

    cheers mate.

    Hi Jizzo,

I was using my old 8 wrap 144 butterworth rod with a low mount for my 6.5" Alvey reel. I have used this combination for beach and rock fishing for over 30 years. Not too many fishermen use alveys these days but I swear by them and they are not as hard to master as most people think. They are also very easy to look after with just a simple rinse in water.

    Cheers

  6. Hi Raiders,

Hit the sand at Garie last Monday afternoon with my :wife: Vicki & son Jason at around 4:00pm. There was a rising tide of 1.4mts at around 8:00pm.

I had watched a segment on "I Fish" about beach fishing a couple of days before where they were showing how efective surf poppers were. So I purchased a couple at the local tackle shop to give them a try.

As has happened in the past we did not get a touch until the top of the tide right on dark, but after that almost every cast into the surf was either a good hit or a great fight from a salmon including one tailor around 5lb caught by Vicki (like the ones from the good old days).

After a hectic session of shouts and calls of "I'm on" Jason yells "this is no salmon" and after a 20 minute battle lost what we think may have been a good jew right up in the wash :05:

To my surprise most of these fish were taken on the surf popper with the pilchard below not even touched. This helps to make a block of pillies last a lot longer! The only problem with the popper is you tend to miss a lot of hits and the light hook tends to straighten. I have now applied a second stinger hook to increase hook ups.

As the fish came on late we lost track of the time and when we got back to the car park we copped an official warning and a mouth full from the security guard for not leaving the park before 8:30pm. There is a fine of $300 if you are cauhght. I have fished Garie for for over 30years and have never had trouble with leaving my car in the car park even when fishing all night. Just be warned they are getting tough!

Vicki took this photo with my phone camera so it is fairly poor quality, but it shows our grins of success.

  7. Great work on your Rainbows, My wife and I also went to Lake Lyell on Monday and we camped in a tent for 2 nights, I was taking a kip in the afternoon in the tent one day when my wife Vicki took one of the rods and went for a walk up the bank.

After about an hour I woke and went looking for her in the boat. I found her about half a km from camp, her jeans were wet half way up her legs and she was frezzing. She had langed a nice rainbow on a pink tassie devil but droped in on the edge of the water. She says she through the rod and jumped in the water and thrust the rainbow back up on the bank. Alas it was the only fish we caught for the trip and again I was out fished by the misses. But we had a great 2 nights camping with a great roaring fire to keep us warm along with a few cold drinks
