  1. Hey Raiders,

I'm lucky enough to be traveling to Mexico in March/April. I'll be in Cancun, Tulum, Belize and then over to Costa Rica.

After a quick FR search I couldn't find much recent content about Raiders abroad in Mexico.

Are there any recent trips, or tours that you'd recommend? I'm going to head fishing solo(and send my wife to the spa) but happy to join a mixed boat/run solo.

Google is not as trustworthy as it once was on genuine recommendations so hoping to find a good operator over there.

    Thanks guys!

    Tight lines.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  2. Thanks for the replies guys!

I actually have the Berley Pro visor and mount on my Hook. They seem quite well made.

Although my transducer is a split shot not the triple shot but am going to reach out to Berley Pro and see if their mount(attached photo) will fit my yak and the slightly different transducer.

Back to the workshop. Will share pics once I find a resolution and update to a how-to 😁👍

  3. Hey Guys,

Just got myself a Kayak2fish next gen 10mk II. The yak has a transducer mounting plate but having some trouble getting it right.

Started with it on the outside direct water contact however it was the lowest point and high risk of damaging when launching / retrieving...

I've moved it to under the plate but noticed a significant increase in "noise" on the sounder and the structure scan not working as clear through the plate.

Any suggestions- Is my best bet to cut out the plastic below and allow full transducer-water contact(keeping it safe above the bash plate)? Thought I'd ask before hacking up the plate 😁👍

    Thanks raiders!

    What's a social map??

So your old recorded data is in the same format at the new sounder??

How are you trying to transfer the data?

Copy to SD card then load SD card into new Lowrance unit??

    Doesn't recognise card or files??

    Thanks for your reply!

Social maps is a feature of Genesis C-Maps that allows you to download sonar maps of other users.  Unfortunately my finder is only GPS and does not have the maps preloaded. Trying to avoid the $150+ price to get the maps.

Process I followed was as per the Lowrance instructions, download maps file from Genesis social maps - extract files - move to SD and insert. From what I can understand it should automatically recognise but not luck.

The reveal is only a few months old so maybe still some teething issues to be resolved...

  5. Hey Raiders,

Just acquired a tidy little Yak setup with a Lowrance Hook 5 Reveal GPS on it. So far have only christened it with a Legal Trevally but once I have the hang of it hoping to find some Pelagics in Middle Harbour!

I've tried to load up the social maps from Genesis Live onto the sounder, but can't seem to get the upload to work, has anyone had any luck?

From what I found on the Lowrance site it is compatible but no dice so far.

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

    Hey Yon,

    The info I'm using is:

    1. the fight lasted at least several minutes.

    2. the fish made short powerful runs.

    If it was a king:

    1. The fight would be over very quickly

    2. The run (probably only need one in reefy country) would be sustained until the reefing

    If it was a shark:

    1. Likely a bite off quickly

    2. If no bite off, the shark skin would scrape up the mono for at least a metre above the hook before biteoff

    3. The runs are usually powerful and sustained (makos, bull sharks, bronzies and maybe other species)

    4. They don't reef you

    If it was a ray:

    1. Depending on the ray species, they can be sustained or short but always powerful

    2. The prominent species of ray off the rocks is the black ray and they are powerful but I'm unsure if their fight style is short runs or not.

    3. Rays don't reef you but because they swim mainly across the bottom, they might accidentally rub you off

Also curious to know if that monster did you 3 times in the same session or once per session in 3 sessions?

    Conclusion:

Probably a huge SNAPPER !!! Er no sorry I mean a large ray 🙂

Like the info break down based on the fish!

I'm thinking that a ray would unlikely take a run near the surface...  The few times I've managed to lift large rays they seem to have emptied their battery and that's why I managed to raise them of the bottom... Thoughts?

Based on that I'm guessing something larger and aggressive. I hooked what looked to be a large dark kingfish, my guess at the time was AmberJack or Samson? Who knows, but it acted similar to what you describe and then took a massive run towards the large white floaty at Clifton Gardens snapping me off.

Hypothesizing about the one that got away always gets me up that next 5am spot... Tight lines!

  7. A good place to start is your terminal tackle.... Go lighter, and try to ensure your hook is complete covered by your bait.

Good quality monofilament leader in less than 10lb is a great start.

Bait wise try and avoid servo prawns and go for freshly caught bait or tackle store stuff.

It's very unlikely to hit a wharf on Sydney harbour and go home empty handed if you fish sunrise or sunset. Usually favouring Tide changes...

Keep at it and good luck!

As I didn't see last years, I was wondering if it had changed due to one of the requirements it shows on the list(s).

    The requirement is under "MAPS/CHARTS".

The reason I asked was due to what happened to me during a fishing session. Earlier this year, my mate and I went for a fish around the artificial reefs at South Head. We usually see the big Maritime boat checking boats in the area and most times they miss us (don't know why...lucky?)  Anyway, this time we weren't so lucky. We watched them going to about 1.....

Thanks for sharing Donna! Boating safety is a much welcomed discussion topic!

Hmm Sigma, I would say it might of been that particular officers interpretation of the requirements rather than the exact RMS definition...

A chart plotter is defined in multiple online sources as: "A device used in marine navigation that integrates GPS data with an electronic navigational chart (ENC)" which IMHO clearly identifies it as a form of electronic map.

Also, For those of us who don't have a GPS combo, the RMS have maps on their site to download or order in waterproof paper here: http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/using-waterways/maps/boating-maps.html

Thanks mate, will check this out. Have not made the purchase yet. Not familiar with this brand but very open to knew fishing brands.

Recurve any luck on the setup yet?

I had a similar desire on a slightly smaller budget...One of our fellow members Chao, gave me a little advice on an entry level setup and have just acquired a Gomoku black paired with a Spheros5000SW... Looking forward to giving it a belting on the weekend!

unless the epirb is in a float free frame you must activate it by pulling from the cradle.

and remember to tie the lanyard to the boat fixed structure.

Reminds me that I have to check mine this week not only for expiry but that it passes the self test.

Good time for everyone to check their epirb!

Epirb not required unless travelling further than 2km offshore.

Lifejackets however are mandatory at night and when travelling alone. Looks like it was a wise decision to wear one!

    Thanks Scratchie! :)

He probably had one, but like me and many others, its bolted, usually out of the way and if it was a freak wave, he may not have had time to grab it.

Again, I'm fairly green when it comes to this as I'm learning offshore/Outside boating, but aren't they water activated for that very reason?

  13. Thanks x fire you're absolutely right the bait will float on the surface. So that would necessitate weight on the sliding rig somewhere, or is there another option?

Feel a bit like Wylie Coyote trying to catch the road runner lol

Certain Slide bait rigs are designed to prevent swim-back, provided you setup your sinker leader to be lighter than your main leader, you will at worst, loose your lead. Good luck mate.

  14. Went out with my wife Monday sth Port Hacking after reading a Fishradiers report about the Flathead on the chew.

On the water at 10am, Water temp 20.5, little westerly wind, no swell. Freezing cold I barely thread the line through the hook eye.

We did four drifts from the 30m to 45m depth and by 1 o'clock we had we had reach our bag limit. The average size was 50cm with a few 70cm models. What made this trip different the number of small Flathead where nonexistent.

Did a quick trawl around the cliffs for a O, plenty of bait and birds around.

    dogbox

Average of 50cm! What a great session... The only time I've found them thick they were all sub 40cm...

Glad you filled the freezer for the cooler months!

  15. It's a good rule of thumb to make sure you know the fish before taking it home.

Bag limits, sizes, protected species and potential toxins or poisons are pretty important to your health and our local ecosystems.

That aside, I landed one of these near Clifton Gardens, pretty ordinary fight, but cool to land a new species!

  16. I see, thanks for explaining that Xfire.

I envy you being able to cast so far out. I guess the big rods help with that but I can only get about 50m with a 9ft rod.

Mike, I assure you that if you are only casting the grapple sinker out your casting distance will greatly increase.

Think about your normal beach rig, in this case your casting distance would be restricted by a combination of high casting weight and increased resistance from your bait/ rig.... There are a lot of casting videos on the tube that could help you with technique, but you'll be pleasantly surprised how far you can get out past the breakers!

  17. I'm sure most of the people on here are similar to me.

You walk into a tackle shop to buy some bait, walk out with new leader, hooks, a new rod, burley and bait.

So to get around this problem of mine, I wanted to start catching my own bait.

Do any raiders do this and what do the recommend?

After searching the forums I've seen mullet, poddy mullet, yakkas, beach worms, aus salmon and of course squid.

If these are the main ones then I can just read older posts but if there are other options id be interested to hear some pointers :)

I haven't learned the fine art of sp's as yet :(

Mate, I'll share with you my uni-budget-friendly bait.

Grab the cheapest chicken breast you can, slice into eraser sized pieces, and put into handful sized servings in zip lock bags. Add some Parmesan cheese and crushed garlic into each bag. seal and mix well, put in your fridge a few nights before you're going to use it and presto.

I have taken bream, flathead and pan sized snapper on this... Just ensure to burley up as usually using bread/catfood and/or Burley pellets and you stand a good chance to bring home dinner.

    Tight lines!
