  1. Well what an amazing yet frustrating day. Just about everyone found the bust-ups NE of browns, i have some video of the commotion, thousands of birds and fish going crazy. We must have made 50 passes for no hookups (i should have just thrown a stick bait into them!). For those of you who did hook up, what lures were you using?

Anyone going out through the week?

We got one on a 13 inch lumo sprocket hit the long rigger, hour and half fight, had within meters of boat 3 or four times then spat the hooks. Gutted hookup was early 7am, second hookup was on a deep diver purple about 11am lost that too

  2. I thought tuna was better than the rest (shark, billfish, gems, marlin, etc) can we get clarification on tuna?

On the same note I was told that canned tuna is good as they generally pack the smaller ones in cans, but maybe the big blufins might be an issue? Clarification please

  3. Your right about not doing it properly, my old top ender was earthed to the hull, that's how I got it from hunts marine, went back and told them but they did not care.

I brought it up in the boating section under electrolysis.

    That's another story but.

    WHERE ARE D TUNA??????

  4. Yep I totally agree, i was fishing the Island a Port Kembla once and it took me almost 1 hour to get back when an unexpected wind showed up.

I only attempt to go that wide when the weather pattern is good for a few days after I plan to go out.

Very nice upgrade with the import, I was looking of doing the same in a few years (buy a house down the south coast this year) how much did it set you back?

I was lucky, got it when the aussie dollar was $1.07 US, and US economy was struggling, with electronics trailer, duties, taxes and all the other bs that goes with it cost me Just over 70k, maybe around 80k as i am constantly doing stuff to it. But overall im happy.

  5. Hey All

With all the talk of small boats heading out wide I thought that I would share my hunt for the ghosts of the seas.

As the weather was looking good for the weekend (past) and my dad starting his first day of retirement, I suggested that he jump on board to target SBT off Wollongong.

Although I received some great advice and support from one of the Raiders (cheers Mr E D) we took the gamble not to join all 100000 boats at Browns Heatons and stayed south

We hit the boat ramp (Port Kembla) at half 5 and got the boat in the water ready to head straight out to the 1000 line and drop some lure in the water.

Well after a shaky start with the VHF packing it in and the front livewell backfilling we ended up leaving 1 hour later.

Once we were out there we trolled around past the 1500 line hitting water temps ranging from 19.2 through to 20.5.

We spent most of the day trolling lures until late afternoon when we stopped back at the 500 line for a cube as we picked up a stripy.

Apart from the stripy we did not see any other action

The boat we took out was a 510 quintrex topender with a 90hp etec, we took two 20 liter jerry cans as back up but ended up not needing them.

Went through around 100 liters of fuel for the day covering around 200 km's (approximately)

I'm guessing this was due to the great conditions as last time we were out wide of JB we used a bit more

Hoping that the fish do show up again and a bit closer this time as although we could of pushed wider I still am hesitant to do this

    Cheers

The topenders are great boats, I used to own a 530 Side Consile a year ago, the economy is great as they are light, easy to tow, but when it comes to going wide ill be careful, It once took me 3 hours to get back from the peak when the wind unexpectidly picked up, and could only take it to browns in the best conditions.

I also found that they have electrolysis issues, with the paint bubbling, so quickly got rid of it and imported this beast.

  6. Tried couple times to get you on radio and when i did it was fked. When we were tracking sth about 10 out and you passed east i was running 19.5 water.

We went over 10ne and was getting 19.8 and why we went back sth again.

My mate got into them in arvo but fuel ment we couldnt risk using our reserve limit even though conditions meant we prob didnt need it.

The fish were barrels and one lost after 6hrs and pushed to sunset over 40 min nearly killed anglers and schools stayed deep under boat another boat also got a double when called over. Notice the plural used .

My opinion.... Based on 3 yrs targeting them.

Fish are migrating nth so that school is gonsky. There is more schools still riding the good water yet to pass sydney. That eddie off jb looked interesting also damo and i woulda thought someone would pull fish from it.

3 yrs ago and last yr we got them in 17.4-17.6 water and this year from ulladulla to sydney 19.5 seems the water. I think temp deeper may be different and why they are staying deep mostly, but they gotta eat shedloads sometime/somewhere.

If conditions are right the fish may run close enough again but alot of water out there to find them.

As for lure choice... Fk it they smash anything and we mix up divers and skirts and they all seem to get hit and i think the amount of food the need to sustain migrating etc is why.

Make sure you have liveys though as we had them in the hundreds if not thousand under us for ages down sth after trolled fish were boated we couldt tempt them to eat anything and even jigs which is usually effective failed.

Bluefin usually = loooong days and miles and lots of fuel etc so make sure your ok to do it safely as mates have had to help a couple guys out recently .

The 2 boats we have targeted with are only 20 and 22 ft so yes trailerboats can do it within reason.

Bluefin fever is pretty addictive and once you hook a barrel you will understand.., ahhhh revenge will be mine one day... Lol...

Please take into mind this is just my opinion and any or all could be wrong.

Well except the addiction bit . Lol.

Good luck to all who get out there as my leave passes are well and truly spent this year for them...

Was that Yesterday? How far south were you?

My leave passes are also spent, but if bluefin are around there way be a divorce case worth considering. lol :wife:

  7. We fished both days for zeros.. plenty of boats out both days in perfect conditions but very few fish as other people have posted. Heard a rumor that 1 boat on Saturday night trolling home found a patch of fish wide but apart from gemmies & sharks that was about it. Even the albies went off the chew...The water temps we had were from 18.6 - 19.1 & still perfect for tuna. There were boats calling 19.5 but we didn't see anything near that wide & the tuna that we have seen have been in the temps that we were in over the weekend.

The current is still pushing up from the south & the eddy of warm 20.5 deg water to the north & eddy of warm 19.7 - 20.3 degree water of JB is holding the low pressure eddy off Sydney in place. We just need this water from JB to squeeze in & condense the eddy off Sydney & hopefully the fish will push back in with it.

I don't think the fish have gone as many people are suggesting and as we approach the full moon we should see the fishing improve - however the weather may have something to do with that! This change for the weekend could also stir things up and change things dramatically. Anyway fingers crossed & just my opinion - would love to hear what other people think??

    Cheers

    Damo

Hey Damo, I do hope that your right

Our Day Yesterday started at 4am and ended at 8pm

We went straight to Heatons and were there by sunrise, There were a few birds, we worked the area for a while then packed and headed out towards the eddie so punched out a further 75km from heatons doing 25-30 knots :ranting2: . the only signs of activity was on the edge of the eddie where the water was blue and at 18.4 deg, as we got in to the eddie it was about 17.6deg so we went a bit deeper, 15km into it and green with lots of rubbish and kelp.

We did not turn a reel apart from a Kinglet caught 165km out :depression: that was tagged and released by my mate Anton it gobbled a lure half its size, we zig zaged north between the blue and green water where there was most activity but did not turn a reel. we went back south east of heatons where we got onto them on thursday and worked the area till sunset.

We were crusing between 25 and 30 knots the whole trip, conditions were as great as the company, (four on board) the box of VB throw downs went down well, but the 450 Litres of fuel proved the Kinglet to be my most expensive fish ever caught pound for dollar.

will post a picture of the kinglet when i figure out how.

  8. Got mine too, look awesome, I'm wondering if anyone has put a double hook on theirs, what are your thoughts on that?

The instructions say that you loose the main bait chamber but still have the head to put the baits in.

Less bait = less scent but is it worth havin double hooks for a better hookup rate, ideas please.

  9. So who’s heading out for fin’ tomorrow and what’s the plan?

I’m limited with the resources I have but BOM is showing warm temps SE of browns (appears to be thinning and diminishing) and again a fair way past heatons.

Last time I chased the temp breaks but couldn’t find the fin, only managing to land one albacore. Heard a few guys had a lot of success trolling blindly between browns and heatons last week, several albacore and stripies, 1 or 2 marlin and a patch of yellowfin. Any of the latter will do me just fine.

Interestingly, last week, on my return journey from 30km due east, I found more and more bait the closer I got to browns.

I believe if you subscribe to seasurface.com or a similar service it will be money well spent, as currents and temps change every day, to make the most of your outings, especially if you are already burning fuel going that far, that's my opinion. I can't wait for a satellite weather service to be available so we can load sst charts on our chart plotters, as they have it in he states, would anybody know when something like this will be available? Its called Sirius weather in the states.

  10. Finin

I have a holiday house in Ulladulla , I used to take my quintrex top ender there, as it was a easy to tow, but sold the quintrex and upgraded to a 23foot Polar weighs 4 tonne loaded. I'll play it by ear and call a local I know to see if it's on

  11. Hey Finin

Thanks for that detailed update, great work on the blue eye, I will be heading out on saturday but after your report may tow the boat to Ulladulla if seabreeze predicts great sea conditions, do you guys think it's worth the hike?
