awesome kingy mate well done
-
It has been a while in the making, but finally landed my very first legal kingfish today from the rocks, a spur of the moment trip before work. Found a ledge that was unoccupied, watched the ocean for 10mins or so - then started fishing at 7am, was all done by 8:30am.
It measured 70cm, and was taken on an unweighted squid pinned simply on a single 3/0 Mustad 'Big Gun' hook - just flicked out into the wash from the rocks at the south end of Coogee (toward Maroubra).
As soon as it hit, there was no doubting what it was - those things really do peel some line very quickly, the fish took its first big run away from the ledge which was to my advantage. I had already been dusted on 20lb gear on my first cast (which I think was a large salmon), and luckily switched up to my 30lb braid spool on which this was landed. I reckon they would have heard me cheering from Bondi as it came up over the ledge having nearly done me twice at the death!
Also released a few small tailor & pike which took my fresh slimys fished in the same manner.
Whilst I would loved to have stayed on - I was fishing alone, I am not a hugely experienced rock fisho & the swell began to come up a bit so it just wasn't safe to stay out there.
Suffice to say I will never forget the feeling of the fight & those nervous last moments trying to land it unassisted, but it has been well worth the effort.
Also want to mention a big thanks to some fishraiders who have generously helped me with tips & advice (you know who you are) - and proof that nothing beats persistence and time on the water.
Awesome job mate great work! Solid fish! More kingies to come hopefully!

Good effort. I did OK on the bonito the other week trolling in close from Barrenjoey to Whale Beach. I'll be targeting bonito again soon, I hope. This is the lure that has been working well for me. I don't what make the lure is and I can't find another anywhere. I probably won it in a fishing club raffle or found it on the cover of a magazine!

Hi raiders
Only new to this forum but love reading the stories and tips I get from this forum so i thought i share my 1st king and my dad flattie from this morning fishing from the Spit ..
The sized at 78cm and flattie at 67cm a very goood day as it was out 1st time thier .. would of landed 3 more kings but my knots are still not 100% .. so back to the research and trials and hopefully to chase for some more kings ..
But any tips would be much appriciated ..
Nice fish there great work! did you catch those under a float? or did you just bomb out with a big sinker?

No problem.
Ummm I kept them overnight and didn't change their water + the aerator died during the night so they were barely alive when I used them. I took them too davistown. Managed plenty of small snappper, flathead & a sting ray. No keepers.
Always have success with nippers, It's just the small ones smash them as well.
Hey belligero is davistown wharf any good for whiting?
-
A quill float to a small ball sinker, light trace and a live prawn just of the bottom in fast moving water like the entrance to bural lakes works a treat, whiting, flatties and bream will smash them.
how do you rig it up Flickn? Do you put float then ball sinker then swivel then the trace?
thanks
-
Wouldn't bother with a float just fish unweighted
water is pretty fast, i was thinking maybe a split shot can slow down the float a bit but also dont want my hook on the bottom
-
Im fishing down south in lagoon where its full of whiting and has a rocky/snaggy bottom so i was wondering if anyone has ever tried using a small float while fishing for whiting? or if its possible?
thanks -
Thanks mate, 1st time taking a light approach to the surf, just as fun as wrestling salmon and a lot more taste bud friendly... hahaha.
awesome catch mate! how big was the rod you were using?
-
Ive heard people have caught them as far up as kissing point wharf. Greenwich can be productive at times, so can Balmain east, however they both have their days.
-
try the 3inch watermelon grubs gulp, awesome flathead lure!!
-
I think fillets are too much trouble. Fish with them like you would a Pilly.
thanks mate
-
Has anyone also tried garfish fillets?
-
Thanks alot everyone for your replies, much appreciated!
-
buy them from the seafood shop whole for about 6.50 a kilo. mullet gut is gun and you can use the flesh as well
thanks mate have you used them as strips before and any particular mullet i should buy? or is it just called sea mullet?
-
Has anyone used mullet strips for bream before? if so do you buy them from a local tackle store, seafood shop or do you catch the mullet yourself? and are they any good for bream?
thanks! -
Thanks guys

Is fishing off Lake Macquarie swansea bridge allowed?
thankyou -
I try to not fish lures off any wharf, as most wharves on the parra river have been over fishe, just look at google maps and explore some spots that look they are worth a flick around. Start by using softplastics either squidgy bloodworm wriggler, zman grubz in bloodworm colour too or also Gulp grubs in watermelon or pumkin seed are awesome try with a 1/10th or 1/8th jig head and fish it slowly with some long pauses, should get into some flathead hopefully. Try the shorelines along iron cove.
goodluck -
Try using the bloodworm wrigglers sp and the squidgy fish in black and gold with a 1/10th jighead

Awesome work mate great job!
how do you work that atomic hard body, do you just slow roll it? -
How about the bay straight behind palmbeach, is it any good?

Thank you to all raiders for your input!
It goes to show how valuable for knowledge this site is. Everyone has a different technique or choice of bait/lure that works for them and are happy to share that info.
It doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work for me but it can be something that I try or something that I haven't thought to try, hence increasing my knowledge and chance of catching that fish.
I hope everyone that has read this thread has got something out of it, thanks again for all your feedback!
Cheers scratchie!!!
Rapala SXR12 in glass ghost colour or the SXR10 in the same colour, or the lively lures Mack bait in 4inch or 5inch. Ever give them a go? Have always worked for me when nothing else seems to be working.
