  1. Thanks for a detailed report. Info like that is really helpful. That's a great fish, not many that size being caught recently. Really interested hearing about the upwellings. Sent you a pm.

    Cheers, Bart

  2. Most guys either anchor or slow troll grassy. There are too many boats there to drift. My experience is that the fish patrol the whole areas at grassy, so you don't need to anchor right in the middle of the pack. Its a VERY productive area, but mackerel are finicky and just won't bite some days. Go light on the wire (28lb) and try to keep them short. Just fish snapper gear with 20lb braid and you will have heaps of fun. The spotties are 4-8 kg, and go like the clappers. The spaniards are 10kg+. Might see you there in Feb - I will be there the 2nd weekend in a blue Pioneer centre console.

    Good luck

Appreciate the advice. We will be there first week of Feb. Black trim Evolution half cabin "Sea Eagle".
  3. Hi mate,

I was up there last feb and I'm going again this feb. The bar wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be. We were in a 6m centre cab and it was fine even in a ver low run out tide.

We went to grassy and burlyed up and got them on pilchards and yakkas (couldn't find any slimies at the time). You might get some on lures but from what I've heard it's pretty tough.

    Good luck!

Thanks Crusher that's good Intel. Do you anchor at Grassy or drift. What's on the bottom up there, reef??

    Cheers, Bart

  4. Yes mate, run a short length of wire on your minnow lures, about 2 feet should be enough. Use a "Haywire twist" on both ends, attach to a good swivel&snap like a "Sampo". Not a big fan of wire on my Marlin lures, but I do know of some fishos who do.

Cheers mate, will take that advice onboard.

  5. G'day. Heading to SWR in the first week of Feb and after any general advice for the area. Have a 6m Evolution half cabin and main targets will be mackerel, dollies and small blacks if they are around.

Any tips for crossing the bar? Seems most rig their live and dead baits with single strand wire for the macks. 2 hook or single hook rig for livies? What about bibbed lures, do they need a short section of wire as well?

Any tips on techniques for the area much appreciated.

    Cheers, Bart

  6. I like both,

i use the overhead for short jerky fast jigging and i prefer a large spin reel 6500 size for a longer jigging action to get the jig pumping out a long way side to side..

if i had to choose one it would probably be the spin for me.

i say go for it mate and swap between both outfits on the day to see which technique is working better.

I suggest if your undecided try play (air jig) with overhead and spin to feel which feels in the hand for you. I have both overhead and spin and I always revert to spin. The best advice if try stretch the budget and get quality, as jigging is hard on the gear and from memory the drags on the saltiest over head ain't that good (speaking from experience) Personally have a look at a 8000 sized spin like a Saragossa or something in that range.

Thanks for the input guys. I like the way your thinking, just get both and swap. What do you think of the Jigging Master rods. The Terminator is toward the bottom of their range but it all seems really good quality and well balanced.

  7. Hey Mate,

I use a relatively simple but strong setup

Daiwa Saltist 30 Lever Drag 2 speed

Daiwa Monster Mesh Jig Rod 3-6 Pe

    50lb Braid

I find it works really well, the reel is relatively narrow so I don't worry about line lay and it goes hard!

Have used both overhead and spinning I prefer over head !

    Cheers

Had a look online at the Saltist. Looks very nice. Seems like the vote goes to the overheads so far.

    Cheers, Bart

  8. attachicon.gifphoto.JPGoverheads are easier for me, i find the rotor on a spin reel flying around puts me off my rhythm. you also get a lot more reel for your money when you buy an overhead. this is a pic of my setup at the moment, i love her. her name is sally.

Thanks for the info. That looks like a t-curve deep jig. I've only used mine twice (spin version) but I'm not 100% happy with it. The butt is about 4cm too short I reckon. Thinking of getting a jigging master terminator II in the overhead version. Still undecided on the reel.

  9. Hi,

I bought a fin-now marquesa 20 overhead, have landed somee nice kings with it and have been really pleased with it. It's got plenty of grunt but also a good retrieve ratio which is important if you are mechanical jigging as lower ratios can lead to line wrapping round the tip. I reckon it's all down to preference but I found jigging more comfortable with an overhead that's fits nicely in my hand.

    G'day Dave

Which rod did you match that reel to?

    Cheers, Bart

  10. have a look at shimano torium 16, i jigged with one for years and found it to be up to the task at 12 mile. extend the handle (there are two positions for the handle) from the factory setting as this helps keep your rhythm. never had a problem with line lay, i did upgrade the drag with greased carbotex washers and there is very little starting inertia as the drag starts to work. star drags (torium) get you down faster than lever drags (fin nor marqueser) because the spool disengages completely however lever drags allow you to set your drag accurately at home before you hit the water.

    good luck

Thanks for that. How do you compare it to jigging with a spin reel?

    Bart

  11. Thanks guys. Definitely looking at a narrow spool reel something max 30mm so hopefully laying line not an issue. Do you think there is any difference in the action or fatigue with an overhead. I was jigging for up to 2 hours the other day (on and off, not continuously) and it is tiring. What about drag issues. My spheros has a fair bit of build up above what the drag is set at before it gives line. I thought that might be due to the vertical angle with the rod fully loaded up. Was wondering if a overhead would help alleviate that a bit.

  12. Would like to pick the brains of anyone who has an opinion on which setup is better for jigging. The common answer (and most logical to some extent) is just whatever feels comfortable. I'm after something a bit more specific if possible. I currently have a t-curve deep jig 200 with a spheros 10000FB. I think this goes ok as a medium priced spin outfit. Considering whether I want to shell out for a decent mid priced overhead setup.

So what are the pros and cons of both? Both for jigging and for fighting a fish vertically in 100m. As an example I recently read that it takes longer to reach the bottom with an overhead vs spin. Not a biggie but a slight negative all the same. What about fatigue? Is one system better than the other? How much is budget a factor? Certainly all the jigging videos out of NZ have most fish caught on overheads.

    Any help appreciated. Cheers, Bart

  13. Hadn't been for a fish for 2 months. Weather was looking good but I was having trouble deciding where to go. I find spring a dilemma. Go wide or inshore reefs?? There didn't seem to be many reports of kings around but I decided to give Texas Reef one last shot for the season. Glad I did. Got 2 72cm on jigs right on the tide change then it went dead. Caught a Baracouda which was a first. Gave up on the jigs and switched to liveys. One rod went off then the other screamed off. I switched to the one having line stripped off it. That turned into a 92cm king. Went back to the other which turned out to be a Johndory. Also another first. Overall a great day.

  14. PR knot is the best of all but FG knot is the go if you don't want to stuff around with a bobbin. 50 lb is fairly heavy off the sand which will limit your casting distance a bit. I use 30 lb braid and 30 lb FC leader and that has held up ok for some decent sized rays and small sharks as by-catch fishing for tailor and salmon. The longer leader will give you a bit more shock resistance during the fight.

    Cheers, Bart

  15. Nice king it least you got one

I wouldn't say you have to keep 200m from them even the pros at longy come whitin 5m of you and there fine and there trolling livies

How far off shore is Texas reef I've heard about it I'm guessing you head out from pittwater heads

    Cheers sydneyfisher12

Texas Reef is 24nm from Barrenjoey. We were out there on Tuesday as well, how did you go Scratchie? Hey Meg, what time were you there on Wednesday. I have been there a few times over the last month and it's definitely preferable to be there for a tide change. The bite can come on then turn right off. Are those licenced vessels you're referring to charter boats or pro boats?

    Cheers, Bart

  16. G'day guys

I have never been to Texas Reef before. Was planning a run one day next week. Can anyone share any general info. Is it holdings kings from around now? Was planning jigging with 250 gram jigs and live baiting yakkas and trying to time it for the tide change. Any one got any tips how to fish this area?

    Cheers, Bart
