  1. No mate I left them to it, like you said there is plenty of water to try, no point on stepping on anyones toes. I got into some bream at Putney.

p.s. Have you had a chance to try your luck newatthegame since this thread started Cheers Dave

    Hi Dave

Nah i haven't had a go since i posted, was up at Taree last weekend though and got amongst a few which was great. I am currently working at homebush bay and look out over the water everyday wishing i was fishing instead of working, never have tried the flats there only the rock walls where i have had sucess. Hen and chicken bay is usually productive but i have had no success as of late either, maybe i am just getting worse!

Thanks alot for the tips Greg, did you sell the skeeter?

  2. What boat do you have and do you have an electric motor?

That info will give me an idea of what sort of areas

Do you want to fish east or west of the bridge?

I have a 3.85m quintrex explorer with minn kota electric. Want to fish mostly west of the bridge as it can get a bit too sloppy for the boat during traffic.

  3. Hi Guys

Looking for some new spots to chase bream on lures in the harbour as my usual spots have provided me with jack. Without giving away secret spots can anyone give me some tips for the harbour. Any help is appreciated, and if needed spots are welcomed on my boat, (nothing flash but does the job)

    Thanks

  4. Thanks very much Iceman - off to do some business now. Cheers

I use the daiwa saltwater series rod, 7ft 15-19lb rod and daiwa 4000 terria. Caught jacks, barra and reef fish. Doubles as a snapper and light kingys back home as well

  5. Vince,

You can fit around 4000 metres of PE8 on the Stella 20000. The good thing is that the spools are interchangeable, so if you do purchase a 10000, you can still use a 20000 spool for higher capacity.

As for the 'spool play', a small amount of vertical movement exists on all Shimano reels and is not a fault or poor design. Have a think about what would happen to your spool/reel internals if you smashed it against the gunnel with no 'give' at all in the spool attached to the main shaft - simply too tight, things will inevitably break.

Can you really fit 4000 metres of PE8 braid on a stella? Would hate to be paying for that much braid, also more than the reel itself. Maybe 400m??

  6. hey guys thanks for all the replies, basically my only concern is the rod's ability to cast a rang of lighter and heavier lures, whats your opinion on what would do the job best? has anyone tried the phluger contender 7'6 8-12kg?

i will also look into the snapper raider, the king mack might be a bit too much for my budget.

    cheers

Try the daiwa saltwater series. Took one up north, awesome rod

  7. Hi All,

I've only ever used spinning reels, and thought i'd try something different.

Bought a baitcaster recently that keeps tangling just about every time I cast. :(

If I tighten it too much, then I get no distance, loosen it a little and get tangled!

It seems that the sppol spins quicker than the reel can let the line out?

Are bait casters even designed for casting? or are they more for live baiting, or simply dropping weighted baits off the side of the boat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Cheers,

    AJ

Baitcasters are made for casting. The thing is to get the cast control and magnetic brake just right. Best thing to do is get some cheap mono and practice with that as braid is expensive. Also baitcasters are not the best for casting light weights i.e bream lures, and don't be afraid to use your thumb when casting especially as the lure withs the water.

  8. i've got a haines sea wasp which i want to name but i also want to be able to put the name on the back of my year 12 jumper.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers Steve

  9. I will be taking newatthegame for a test run soon :biggrin2:

I am biased of course ,but for the money this boat is great for the lure fisher and has deep sides for the little ones .

I have had ours for 3 yrs and can not fault it other than you can not stow your rods under the hull.

Small price to pay for a nice stable ,soft riding boat and cheap as chips to run and maintain.

One of the best things is no electrolysis  and you can screw many gadgets straight to the polyethelylene with stainless screws.

    Cheers Stewy

Thanks guys for the offers, what a great site

  10. Hey Guys

Just looking to upgrade my existing boat which is a quintrex 3.85m explorer. Was looking at the 4.5m Hornets and 4.1m polycraft boats. Never been near or seen a polycraft before, would i notice much of an upgrade space wise on the explorer? What speeds are achieved in a polycraft with 50HP? Is there much room to fit under the console for a big man (6"2 110kg)? Is the finish a bit dodgy?

I have heard great things about stability, ride and noise and they seem good value for money. Any help would be great

    Thanks

  11. Hi all

Hoping someone up there can advise me, I was given a Shimano Sustain 4000 Spinning reel for Xmas (by myself) and wanted to match a rod with it, for my impending arrival in Townsville. I don't want to arrive undergunned you see.

Any thoughts from you guys, planning to use it up there for reef fishing SP's etc, maybe in the creeks for MJ and Barra. I was thinking of a 4 - 7 kg 7 foot spinning rod using 20lb braid. Any thoughts?

I will be driving past MO Tackle on the way up, so I would rather be prepared!!

    Pedro

I had a similar outfit for the NT which i got back from. It will handle it no worries. We trolled for barra and mangrove jack as well as reef fishing for coral trout, black jew, fingermark etc. Shouldn't be a problem

  12. Smaller stuff for bream and bass i like the gulps and the old bass minnow. For the bigger stuff flathead, snapper and barra i like the squidgy. Saying that the have all caught me fish. Probably depends on what i feel like tying on, more than what the fish like.

  13. Hey guys

Haven't been on here for a while ( bloody work) but i just got back from my trip to King Ash Bay on the Macarthur river north of Borroloola. It was a great trip with the old guys and the fishing was tough for the territory. Many of the locals stating that the fishing was the toughest they have ever experienced. Still we did alot of reef and estuary fishing catching many different species. The highlight was my first barra going just under 80cm, some of the virgin species were mangrove jack, fingermark bream, black jew, threadfin salmon, coral trout, mackeral, queenfish.

All in all it was a awesome trip and can't wait to plan my next one (swordy that bass fishing at glenbawn looked fun might go there)

Attached are a couple of pics

    Cheers Randall
