With work imposing forced leave, I took the opportunity to fish with the kayak gang during my holidays. I was supposed to meet the guys at the ramp by 6am but I had trouble sleeping the night before and woke up late 5:45am! With only 15mins to get ready I messaged the guys that I would be late and not to wait up for me. Made it to the ramp by 6:20 and they were still getting ready, phew.

On the way to catch livies we sounded a school of bait in the middle of the channel, a quick drop and I hook just one sardine and the school quickly disappeared. The next few hours we spend ages trying to catch live bait with no luck. One of the guys decided he wanted a head start and went straight to the main channel to chase jewfish and snapper. It wasn't long before we got word he hooked up to a 40cm snapper and undersized jewie.

We quickly headed over and started to drift our baits across the channel. I managed to hook a pan sized snapper 32cm on squid, but no luck on the jewfish. One of my mates manages to catch another 2 jewfish on strips of squid but they are undersized and released.

We ran into a regular jewfish chaser who told us that kings were busting up further up channel, we thanked him and made our way quickly to the spot.
I dropped my squid baits down and hooked a nice Maori Rockcod and many Bigeyes. I caught Bigeyes on squid, slowjig and sabiki, there was no way to avoid them. One of the guys caught a yakka on sabiki only to have a kingfish steal it from under him. About 30mins later he manages to convert a dead sardine into a 69cm kingfish.

It took me about 30mins to finally catch some yakkas on sabiki. I send one back down while working the sabiki rod. A few minutes later the rod buckles over and the reel is screaming. Up comes a 67cm kingfish, a keeper which is dispatched, bled and iced. I send another live yakka down and within a minute the live bait rod buckles over and the reel is screaming again. This time a just legal kingfish 65cm, this one is released to grow bigger. I send another live yakka down and it doesn't take long for the rod to buckle over again, unfortunately no hook up. By this time the wind had really picked up and the kings soon disappeared so we moved spots to target jewfish again.

Half a dozen drifts I land baby jewfish on squid which released.

The kingfish was eaten as sashimi, the bigeye was filleted and eaten as battered fish. The maori rockcod was steamed and fantastic eating, it's such a rare catch for Sydney given how cold it is compared to Queensland.

Another great session on the kayak

    Hey mate.

Was that you in the yak at the same spot today?

    Dan

  4. Thanks mate. I know they are a fickle fish to target. In both regards, seasonal,, sometimes they turn up, sometimes they don’t.
I appreciate your help, might give it a few weeks & try for them.

  5. Hi All.

With the kings and dollies starting to thin out,, I was considering chasing hairtail as it is that time of the year.

Just wondered if anyone has tried for hairtail yet and if they had any success?

Not after your spots, as I have my own, just wanted to know if they are about yet.

    Many thanks

    Dan

  6. I recently got annoyed with wasting fish thru filleting fish with garbage knives 🔪. So I did about a research. Bought a heap of chef’s/butchers filleting knives. Primarily mundial knives & wostoff. They are a dream to work with.
Only a week ago, filleted 3 kings, a flathead and a dory. Had them all done in a total of 5mins. My brother who’s a ex chef of 10+yrs said it was the the best & fastest filleting I’ve ever done without missing any  meat! So I’d say forget the filleting knives from tackle shops,,, buy professional knives they are worth it.

I haven't heard any reports of kings in JB however my dad went outside of JB and caught about 5 snapper, the smallest being 35cm and the biggest being 68cm.

    Dont know if this helps

    Adem

Thanks Adem, never really had much luck chasing snapper in Jervis Bay. Probably due to my lack of patience hahhah and having to carry so much berley.

I went out last Thursday found kingfish in good numbers and good size. Used metal lures and soft plastics around salmon schools outside the heads. Also plenty of snapper around mostly in deeper water. Hopefully you get a few and sing out if you need crew.

    Cheers Toilor

Thanks Toiler, appreciated that. Id like to take you up on the offer of a crew but its my brothers boat, and its only a 4.2m tinny.

Tho if for any reason I don't fish a day with my brother I'll let him know of your offer.

Try for squid around callala beach or long beach and head to the middle grounds and long nose. If you’re around husky I can’t offer much for the squid.

Thanks for that. I usually grab a few squid just off Murray’s boat ramp?

  10. Hey everyone.
Heading down to Jervis Bay this Friday for 2 weeks with my brother & parents for our first family holiday in 20years.
Just wondering if anyone has been getting any kings inside the bay or outside? Not looking for particulars, just asking if they are about? Many many thanks for reading this.
Going to try for squid for a feed if the kings aren’t about.
worse case scenario fall back on the ever reliable flathead drift.
    Cheers.

I can't help you with the kings, but I do know the squid have been biting well lately, some big ones amongst them too.

It always pays to bring extra jigs, there's not many jackets at the moment but they can show up any time.

Thanks Green Hornet for the heads up. Did a quick count today, Ive got just over 50 squid jigs, and my brother has over 80+ squid jigs, all yammies or zori's... just hope this is enough and the bloody jackets don't turn up.

    How is middle harbour doing?

Very quite in Middle Harbour today, missed two runs on XOS Yakkas to kings, otherwise dead. Whereas the week before we went thru 25+ yakkas in 2 hours to rats, a couple of big bust offs, a reddie at 52cm, and missed a couple runs to jews (yakkas came up crushed and covered in pin holes). Only one king came last week to squid. Otherwise yakkas and slimies have been doing the damge

  13. Hi All.

Heading to Jervis Bay with my brother for 10 days after Anzac Day. Was wondering if anyone has been getting a few kings "inside" the bay ie Point Perp, Middle Grounds,  Longnose etc?

Not after specific locations, just info if they are still around in numbers?

As want to minimise the amount of gear we take down if they aren't really about.

Also any squid about at the moment? Should we take down extra jigs due to jackets biting you off? Last year at the same time we lost 22 jigs in 7 days, was a expensive BUT rewarding trip.

Any info would be greatly appreciate, not after specifics just a general heads up if anyone has any info.

A HUGGGGEEE thanks in advance to anyone that could shed some light on the situation down their at the moment.

    Happy Easter!

    Dan

  14. Heading down to Jervis in a couple weeks. Was just wondering if the FAD still has dollies on it?

Otherwise I was going to just stay inside & chase kings, flathead & squid.

    Thanks. Dan.

  15. Hey mate, I would stay away from the Shimano D series. I have 2 mates that own several of these and all they have had is constant problems. Shimano stopped making these about 18months back, so if you purchase one and have problems your in for a lot of grief finding replacement parts! Keep in mind these guys wash there gear thoroughly after every fish weekly, and have them serviced every 3-6months, like I do with mine.

IFFFF you can find a BTR B series,,, BUY IT! They are bullet proof. Between myself and my brother, we have 7 shimano 4500 btr's, 3 still brand new in the box, we bought the last of the stocks in Sydney when they stopped making them 5 years ago..... The other 4 we use weekly, and after nearly 10 years are going strong!

For your budget of $200, Id look at the Fin Nor, curious to try them myself. My latest purchase was a Shimano Thunnus BTR, abit more expense $270 approx., its not as loud in bait runner mode as the B series of the Shimano' BTRS, but its a lot lighter for sure!

But I'd say unless you want to up your budget to $270 odd, consider a Fin Nor. The penn live liner's are quite heavy and under decent drag feel sticky

Best of luck in your purchase mate

  16. Kiwi Dan, where have you been mate?

Neither Greg or i have seen you out on middle harbour in years? Still got my number, flick me a sms or gimme a buzz,,, Greg's still donking a lot of kings at in the harbour, but the ratio is down to 5 rats for every good legal at 70cm+

I had a look at Murrays the other day as an option to launch my boat. I was there at the low tide and there was roughly 0% chance of me being able to get mine out on the low. Woolamia is about as good as it gets in JB which is madness given how popular the bay is.

Callala is a total write off

You want to launch really really bloody early down their in summer, ie if the sun is up at 4.15am, be launching at 3am, no latter,,,, or you might as well be parked on the M5 in peak hour, in Sydney.

We usually launch at 2.30am to avoid the rat race of people launching the "bare' minimum of 1hr before sunrise to get their live bait. Usually we have a great laugh watching them gun it out of the bait grounds after getting their livies whilst we have already had our livies down for 30-45mins.

    Dan

  18. My brother Greg quite often scares a lot of gulls resting on the water when he goes out Saturday night at 10pm chasing squid for the following day's fishing,,, so I wouldn't waste my time having a fish where they are sitting on the water.

Which is better a shimano baitrunner LC or a thunnus . Does drag matter a lot cause LC have more drag

I went off the shimano btr's after they introduced the newer model after the B's. I think they are called the LC's, and OC's. I don't own a LC however a few mates do and all they have had is constant problems, to the point that they have set aside these rod and reel combo's for "newbies" on there boats.

I cant fault my thunnus's, have landed kingys to 78cm on them, and jews to 80cm. With the right rod they are a much more versatile than the shimano BTR B's, and lighter. I have mine on a gomoku PE1-3 with 20lb braid,, I love the combo, can flick squid jigs, bottom bounce for flathead, and can chase small jews and kings.
