  1. hey all,

i scored some new squid jigs which look pretty awesome, Ikado 101. I think they are by Rapala (so must be good).

Has anyone tried them yet? i might give them a go this afternoon if i get the chance.

  2. hi all,

a friend has just stocked a dam of theirs and they want to stock it with some bass & cod etc. but the problem is the fish wont have anything to feed on.

he then thought of stocking it with boney bream first to get a natural food source happening but he has not found where to get boney bream from (aquarium, wherever it doesnt matter).

    can someone suggest something?

    thanks

    James.

  3. your intial suggestion Poddy is too light for the size of the reel being purchased. a 20000 size reel is far better suited to 50lb or 80lb braid for heavy fishing like cubing or trolling as you suggested, a 10-15kg rod would better suit a reel around the 8000-10000 size. in this case stick to a short, heavy rod with a medium taper. The okuma VSystem jig rods would be ideal as they are only 5' long and either in 24-37 or 37-60kg models, solid sticks. Not one of those fancy "japanese brands", but one of the greats IMO if you are looking for quality, comfort and reliability over brand name.

  5. great stuff stewy! it looks like the guy in the middle caught the fish and you caught him! was that from the cooks river? :074:

    congratulations

    pete.

i heard it was on a peeled prawn, under como bridge?

  6. +1 for Okuma Salina II, i've got one and it is great guns! - you should be able to get the 16000 which puts out over 20kg of drag for about $350 locally. Don't buy these overseas though. a friend of mine did and the SS internals of the Aussie versions were not evident in the O/S versions and the bearings went quick.

    get what ya pay for.

    James.

  7. They look really good. :)

Tell us the price son ?

    depends where you go cut_loose.

RRP is apparently $19.95 or thereabouts.

    SidFisher,

I don't know anyone special, but i have no problem paying good money for good lures.

  8. Hi James,

I should have said "It seems you know a thing or two about winter trevallying". I like your style when you say you couldn't get past the bream to get to the trevally. I'm the opposite... :biggrin2:

It's definately not common knowledge that winter means fish structure with light gear and burley....

I also didn't realise you have 1900 posts to your credit - you have obviously been a raider a lot longer than I have.....

Did you mess with any sambos or kingies last weekend?

    Tony

    appearances can be deceiving

couldnt spot any surface activity so did not bother with kings or sambos. i'd downrig a live squid around a few known spots but the cold water put me off trying, plus like i said - i was there for the trevs

    James

  9. Hey James,

Seems you know a thing or two about winter breaming.

It's funny you said there are no tricks or spots, yet you mentioned the trick, the tip and the spot.... The oil wharf is a big structure and let me tell you, not all of it has fish. There are some areas that hold fish and some that are barren. You found fish because you tried to find them - you fished the structure, you burlied and you got the fish around. Only problem is you can't get within 100m else ports authority will move you on...

How many fish did you get? Any photos?

I can't wait until I finish my renovations - I'm nearly out of fish and I haven't bought any in years....

i suppose you are right, fishing structure and using burley just seems to be common knowledge, or so I thought.

kept 6 bream to 42cm, released heaps because I dont ususally keep them, and a dozen trevally between the two of us, most around 35cm but a few good ones in it. no pictures, cameras are bad voodoo - i am taking the kayak out this weekend for a lure sesh, i will take the camera and see what happens.

i was there purely targetting the trevs as I had heard that the big +50cm fish were at the oil wharf the weekend before, the barometer did let us down, and mostly smaller fish were about.

i rarely target bream, but they were suprisingly hard to get past on the weekend, heaps of small reddies too.

    James

  10. there are no tricks, hidden tips or spots... fish structure with burley and you will get fish.

i fished on saturday around the oil wharf and got a good bag of bream and trevs before the wind kicked up without really trying.

    James

  11. thanks for all that Roberta,

you have swayed me more to the outback now due to your experience with the latest model, I was pretty much settled on the revo until i read your very informative reply.

i should clarify; whilst I will be using the yak around the headlands and possibly just outside of BB a bit, the hobie will mainly be used inside Botany Bay itself around 90% of the time. in saying that though, I will be concentrating my efforts on areas such as Moll Pt and the Oil Wharf which are situated a short paddle from the headland anyway.

I will be viewing the range later this week and making my selection then.

thanks a bunch for your insight.

    James

  12. I visited the same place in 2007. It was a fantastic experience. However I didn't get a chance to fish. Im going to vietnam this december and planning to fish in my grandpa's backyard which is a massive lake. Hopefully we can rent out a small boat/dingy.

    /half coconut :biggrin2:

  13. it's a crap time really, well it has been for me also - went for a fish off a local Syd beach just on the weekend which is usually a sure-fire success spot and came up with donuts!

i figure the water is just wrong, it is really cold all of a sudden.

so... it's not just you, it will fire up again when the cond's are right.

    James

  14. thanks Craig,

you highlighted 2 of the models I was really torn between; the Revo and the Outback - i have heard that the revo is a good yak, but the stability factor worries me for offshore bobbing around near wash etc; the Outback seems big and wide, but i have heard that it was designed particularly for +100kg yanks, with lesser weight apparently they are a bit buoyant therefore losing their stability factor (i am 65kg); the third option was the smallest of the group being the sport, however as I am an angler who enjoys taking a feed of fish home the Sport's lack of storage and spare space to lie a brace of kingies on the deck put me off.

i considered the pro angler too, but after checking reviews etc it seems more like a calm water yak than anything else - which isn't really my style.

thanks Scaffdogg, very helpful to hear of someone who has one.

    James
