  1. Good for you...great fish and your smile says it all.

    KB

Hahah thank you! I was completely ecstatic!

Well done mate nice flatty :clapping:

    Hahahaha thank you!

Great photo! If you are anything like me, you would probably try to repeat the exact steps next time hoping for another big one.

I'll be bagging all the pilchard heads that go to waste as use for the next big flathead, hopefully I can report another monster in!

great effort mate........you said two metres from the edge........funny how people from the shore think you have to cast 200km lol to catch fish, while people in boats cast towards the shore......just some thinking for ya

I'll be taking that into consideration next time, Thank you!

That is a serious fish well done mate ! I found that flatheads can be pretty suicidals at times :)

This thing felt like an angry middle aged guy at a rock concert! Headbanging like no tomorrow haha!

That is excactly what I do all time fishing cast 2 to 3 metres away from the bank or rock, and always get fish

I always used to try cast it out halfway to china, now I don't even use sinkers when I fish, I just use the weight of the bait and a hook haha :)

  2. good stuff mate

Hope to feel the joy of catching one of these buggers soon

Thanks mate! Hopefully you'll land your first one soon, you'll definitely know about it once it hits your line!

you will never get sick of the smell of a jewie. well done.

the first one is the hardest.

hahah thanks alot. That was my first jewie, I'm hoping as you say is true. The first one is the hardest one, I went out again the other night and just before I could get myself a nice bait to throw out, My rig decided to snap on my surf caster leaving me with no chance at a jewfish that night :(

oh yeah that first one's always awesome , love how the sand always sticks to those scales never get sick of that top effort

Ahahaha the sand was from dragging the beast onto the beach next to the spot, it was the only way I was going to surface this bad boy, Mind you a mate and I had no net and no gaf so it was hands all in the water to get this bugger! haha

    Well done mate.

    Thanks champ!

Congrats. A catch you'll never forget.

I'm never going to forget catching my first Jewfish. I'm going to chase after that feeling every single time I wet a line now!

Awesome. Great looking fish there and a big smile to go with it!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks scratchie! Big big confused smile, I couldn't believe what I had pulled in! haha

I am sure there will be more to come. ;)

I'm hoping so man! Maybe you could teach me a thing or two to make catching jewfish a regular occurrence? ;)

  3. Hey fishraiders!

I finally loaded up the photo of my flathead I caught lastnight. Strangely enough, I caught this thing on Pilchard head, just thrown two meters away from the water edge, I let it sit there while I lit up a smoke then picked up my rod only to feel like it was a snag, I lifted it a bit more and it was off! Maaaaaan did this run and the head shakes were amazing. I just thought I'd share with you my Personal Best Flathead, measuring at 77cm :)

Sorry for the blurry photo, bad quality camera but I was super happy about this! haha

    thanks fish raiders! :)

  4. Evening Fishraiders!

It's been a while since I last posted on this website. I'm here to bring you guys some exciting news from my world.

Lastnight, I managed to hook onto my first Jewfish ever! Man did it run like a whopper! It measured in at 80cm, didn't really have the chance to weigh it. I'm honestly stoked as about catching my first jewfish, I now know why everyone loves to chase after these tiny monsters! I've attached a photo of me with it on this post, (PS. Don't mind my face, I didn't know how to react to catching my first menace of the ocean!)

    Cheers FishRaiders! :D

  5. Thanks for the responses guys!

Just wondering if any of you would be able to tip me off about a place where I can chase bronzies? I want to fight something a little more exciting, I do tend to find the Port Jacksons to be lazy little buggers that just sit on the bait haha, Also, You mentioned Mullet fillets right? Mullet fillets bought from the store work too right? If so, Do I cut off a big chunk of it or do I use it sparingly? I'd really like to start pulling in some other types of sharks!

Also, What is the best rigging set up for chasing bronzies? Sorry for the whole heap of questions, I just want to learn as much as I can haha :)

    Cheers fish raiders!

  6. Hey FishRaiders!

I recently posted up a question in General Fishing talk about going fishing for sharks, I took some of the knowledge that I learnt and applied it down at Bare Island La Perouse. Two nights ago, a few mates and I went down to catch some sharks, we surfaced one big Port Jackson with the size of a soccerball. It busted off as it got caught along the rocks before we could get a hold of it. Anyway, A friend and I went back down lastnight to catch the monster, We managed to pull one up! It's head was bigger then the size of my head! After the photo was taken, we helped it to recover and was once again released for someone else to catch :-) We used Squid from the Petrol Station to get it, All in All. I find Port Jacksons seem to be the only sharks around La Perouse, In the past three nights, we've managed to catch 7 of them.

    Fish on Fish Raiders!

  7. Mack Attack! Thanks for the reply :)

Thanks for that rap up, I'll be sure to have a look around Roseville bridge, I drove past there lastnight on the way to dropping the girlfriend off in Dee Why. Just not quite sure how to gain access to it, i'll have to look into it!

I recently went down to the local fishing tackle shop, I was buying boxed squid and i noticed they had Bonito Strips and massive Mullet Chunks, Will these help produce a shark? Just out of curiousity.

As for the line, with a shark, is it best using mono or braid? The other night when I was using mono, I noticed that whenever i'd pull the shark in and take it off and release him, my line would be stretched so I would have to re rig all over again with a stronger piece of line. I'm using a 12 foot Shimano Rod, only equiped with a Reel that I think can only hold 20lb line on it, I take that from reading it on the reel. I'm not to good with all this, but will this mean I should be investing in a new reel? Or am I alright to set bigger line on this reel?

    Thanks heaps mate!

  8. Hey A.Dawg :)

Thanks for the response, To be honest, I havn't really been using any shock leader at all haha, The other night while I was in La Perouse, I was just using 12 kilo line as both the main line, and my leader line, seperated by a swivel Haha! I've also heard that sharks thrash around alot, It's quite interesting that you share that with me, I've been thinking about setting up with some better quality line, seeing as I'm currently only using &&*&*& 3 dollar mono line :D

Bronzies and Port Jackson sharks hey? Have they been of decent size? I'd like to land myself either, you mind sharing me some spots mate? :)

    Cheers in advance!

  9. Hey Fishraiders! It's been a while that I've been on here,

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me some interesting spots for shark hunting, A few friends and I have recently hit down at La Perouse and managed to hook up a few and since then, our interest has grown for them.

Any spots around Sydney would be helpful, Possible baits would be appreciated too guys!

Thank you in advance fish raiders! Keep fishing!

  10. One of the most informative posts on Fish Raider that i have come across, Well done everybody!

With the aid of all the information i've collected from each one of your inputs, I'm hoping to land the big one!

  11. Hey Just curious to know if Fishing in the rain would make a difference with the ratio of bites and such, I had been told by one of my co-workers that if you fish while it rains, it distorts the image of you to the fish leading to more bites, What are your opinion on this? If it seems worthwhile, I might go out for a flick tonight.

    Cheers Raiders

  12. Hey Fishraiders! I'm planning on having a flick down at Balmain wharf on saturday night, has anyone got any valuable information they can pass onto me :)

Fish available/ Baits used / Rigging set ups as I'm quite new to the game and hoping to catch some fish!

  13. Finally turned my phone on after a year of it being lost in all my junk and found my old photos of my fishing trip while I was away at Forster!

While we were at Tuncurry, We found a break wall where I seen two carpenters and an elderly man pull in numerous Jewfish, I decided to try have a crack at it one night too

Although I was only equipped with a 8foot Spin Rod, I decided to have a go down there, Only 3 minutes of my bait being in the water, All i heard was zZZZZZZZZZZZZZ From my line.

I reeled it in excited as in hopes it was a Jewfish, only to pull out this Shovel Nose shark, Was quite bummed it wasn't what I was looking for

Pretty good for only my second night fishing hey?

    Aris.

  14. Paul, Thanks for the tips! Honestly appreciated muchly,

Where's a good place to be able to catch fish to eat? I'd heard stories about Parramatta River and not to keen on getting sick from eating fish anytime soon :/

The Five Dock place seems like a really nice settlement to fish, Does it get rather busy there?

  15. I'm currently really new to fishing, So i was just wondering What is the best bait to use on Parramatta river to get Bream to bite? I'm always getting little puffer fish but nothing else :(

Also, What's a good rigging set up? Should I use a sinker or should I just let the bait float around on the surface with no sinker and wait for the Bream to take it and go?

  16. Use Dough? You mean like, raw kneaded fresh dough? Or can I just use bread and such?

Tell me about it! I was out lastnight at Kissing Point wharf at around 3:45 and they were just flying in and out of the water, every time I heard one i'd have to stop and ask my mate if he was casting around.

With the dough set up to catch mullet, what do you recommend for my rod/line/sinker/hook setup? I'm honestly a newbie at fishing, past few weeks i've been chucking three sinkers on the same line so it'd smack rock bottom, haha! :074:
