  1. Hey guys and girls,

I'm heading to Sydney for a couple of days and I'm mad keen to get back on the water in the harbour or off the beaches and have a flick. I moved to qld about a year ago now and havn't been back to sydney since.. I'd appreciate a bit of help finding some spots that have been producing lately.. Whats on the bite at the moment? Are the squid fired up? bream? are there any decent catches to be had off the beaches?

Appreciate any help or info anyone is willing to give.

    Cheers,

  2. Hey guys,

With all the rain about where are all the fish hiding? I cant figure the hawkesbury out at all .. and everytime i take the boat i seem to catch nothing.. I saw some massive scales obviously from a large jewfish at the ramp cleaning table but alas i do not know where to find any jews let alone anything else.. any help would be greatly appreciated :)

p.s. with all the fresh water about is anyone catching hairtail?

  3. Great bag mate, well done.

It is fun in clear water when you can see the fish move on the bait.

But then again it can be frustrating, when you can see them and they won't commit.

It sounds like you started fishing for them a bit shallow. Then when you went deeper you were on the fish.

I usually start deep and gradually shallow up.

This is what I do, guesstimate the depth and set the float stopper.

Put a weight on the hook, a sinker wrapped in tape does the job for me.

Cast out, the sinker should take the hook to the bottom, and drag the float under.

If it only just goes under, move the stopper down the line.

If I goes way under. Move it up the line.

I generally start about 12-18inches of the bottom.

So when setting up with the weight, the float is 12-18 inches below the surface of the water.

Weight comes off, bait goes on, float sitting normally, the hook is 12-18 inches off the bottom

Good luck with the new rod, It's a very enjoyable and productive style of fishing.

    hey ryder,

that is an awesome idea, I will give that a try next time i head out for sure.

  4. nice catch mate, i was actually down in wollongong on sat trying to catch some black.. fished for about 3 hours and didn't get a single down. I guess I am going through that frustrating phase you seam to have just gotten over. If you are in the mood to teach a learner some tricks I would be more than willing to listen = )

  5. Hi Howsy and poohbear,

Is there any chance a mate and I could tag long with you guys on one of your sessions to learn the black arts? we have both done a bit of black fish fishing but I think we are missing a few things that maybe you guys could correct? anyways would be wonderful if you guys could help out. awesome catch by the way.

  6. Nice work mate! Feel free to drop me a PM if you don't mind sharing some pointers for Pittwater/northern beaches.. My boat is out of action at the moment which is killing me but hopefully I'll be out in a couple of weeks!

  7. Got out on Friday night to watsons bay and met up with a couple of friends for a flick.. There was about 15 people already on the wharf when we arrived so we got a small spot down the end between us.. It was after high tide unfortunately so only got to fish the outgoing.. There were a couple of small squid landed by some of the other guys but no one seemed to be having much luck.. We started flicking some plastics around as there looked like there was plenty of bait around and managed to land 6 pike between us.. I caught a bite sized calamari so I put him on a 5/0 and sent him out live.. Got a really good run felt and then it got it's freight train on and headed for the harbour bridge and ping! Was fishing with a new penn conflict reel and it dealt out the damage really well though.

Ended up re rigging with a new hook and sent out a butterflied pike.. About 10 minutes later we had another runner and fought it back to the jetty. It was of course a ray but was a great way to test the new rod and reel.. Busted us off under the wharf as did the next one before we called it a night.

Saturdays evening high had me wanting to get onto the beach for a fish so headed to the northern beaches hoping to get stuck into some sambos or tailor.. No such luck nothing was touching the pilchards at all.. My mate caught one keeper whiting that went about 28cm and a small shark.. Looked a bit like a PJ but the head wasn't as boxy.. It was returned to the water with no harm.

Moved to a couple of beaches after the high but no bites..

Not quite sure where all the fish are this winter on the beaches but if anyone is a northern beaches guru and can help me with the best moon phases to hit the beach and best tides you'll save me lots of fuel!

  8. +1 for glad bags... I work with pc's and there is sometimes a billion left over ziplock bags that network cables occasionally come in.. they are heavy duty plastic compared to glad bags and make for great rig holders. I usually make up a bunch of paternoster rigs with a loop at the top and a loop at the bottom (one for sinker and one to clip onto my lure snap clip) with 2 or 3 dropper loops on each. I generally dont put hooks on mine because I just pick what hook and sinker i will use at the time I need to.

    keeps things simple :)
