  1. We never turned a reel on REEF MAGIC and it wasn't through lack of trying I can tell you.We stayed till well after dark cubing on browns and all that was there was wall to wall slimie mackerel.

We did see one fish played and landed but overall it was quiet for us but had a great day out again and even seen a submarine.

Thanks Swano,Paul,Dave and Geoff for a top day out.

    Regards Stewy

We had a tough morning only landing one 35kg fish on the troll. Later in the arvo, we found the school and had them around the boat actively feeding for a few hours. Caught as many as we caught until our arms fell off. Saw one boat catching them on poppers as well. Was about 15 boats around and everyone was getting into them. By the sounds of it, 90% of boats were able to get at least one yesterday. We must have released at least 20 fish and lost a dozen more. Kept 2 for me and the crew.

    Bad lucky Stewy....

  2. Hi

Ive started to have problems with my sounder Humminbird 587.

The sounder signal seems to have lost its power, see the photos below see what you make of it. The unit is coming upto 3 years old now and I cant make out what it may be, im thinking at this stage its the transducer.

The first photo is with the sensitivity all the way up and the second is with the sensitivity as normal range. When the sounder used to work the bottom image could be clearly seen as would be considered normal operation. but now it has real problems even displaying the depth.

    I have checked the following:

    - cable full length

    - scrubbed the transducer clean (although not dirty)

    - checked the connection to the unit, including plugging cables in separate without mount

I dont know what to try next other than taking it to a shop. So im interested to see what you think. I was of the opinion that transducers were pretty much bulletproof but maybe not.

    Thanks

Defiently a problem with the transducer. Best bet would to take in the transducer and cable into your nearest shop and let them deal with it through the rep.

Let us know how it goes.

  3. Too true,

There a lots of idiots down at the boat ramp on Sundays and especially public holidays.

Better to just ignore them and move one.

Roseville ramp is defiently a mess and to be honest, I prefered it the way it was before they did the renovations...

  4. Hi raiders,

Most likely heading out tomorrow on the yak. The one thing i learnt when christening it, DO NOT USE IT IN STRONG WIND.. doesn't apply to tomorrow as winds are fairly light in the afternoon. I haven't really caught much from it yet only having used it once.. High tide at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon, grabbing a few poddies and flicking while having one out seems very jewfishy... My only concern is that it will most likely be a donut as most jewie sessions are... Do you think i would be better off flicking for flatties in narra lakes and having a poddy out there for a bigger flattie? Might have a look up the creeks for bream and EP's if i had head up there... Just can't decide...

    Cheers, Tom

I will be in Middle Harbour having a flick at the high tide tomorrow arvo

  5. Okay well at the moment I have come up with a few options:

    - Daiwa Spellbinder 4-8kg + Shimano Stradic FJ 3000

    - Shimano Raider 4-8kg + Daiwa Freams 3000

    - Shimano Barra Spin 5-10kg + Daiwa Sol 3000

each of the above combos can be switched ie: spellbinder + sol etc...

Anyone has some suggestions about these options? Thanks for all the help by the way!

Spellbinder and any of those 3000 will do the trick I rekon - the Spellbinder has that good length on it for landbased casting and will also make a good SP snapper rod

  6. Daiwa Freams is one of the best reels on the market for bang for your buck - internally it is one of the best reels around the $200 i have ever seen.

Match it up with a nice 5-8kg rod - some nice ones to look at are the Daiwa Spellbinder or the Samaki range

Personally, for under $500, I would be going a Freams 3000 on a 5-8kg Spellbinder

  7. 3" is certainly too small... you can get away with 4" on small schoolies but as previously mentioned 5" + is recommended. The jerkshads are great, 7" especially! The Zman Swimmerz 6" and 4" are my pick though! Great paddle tail lure and dynamite on jews. The pending WR barra caught recently was on one of these! They also last ALOT longer than other SP's and are 10 times tougher! The squidgy fish 100mm is ok for schoolies at times also.

    Cheers, Tom

    Hey Matey,

    Good buy.

However, I wouldnt go by saying that " 3" is certaintly too small". Jewies are oppurtunitistic feeders and IMO will hit any good plastic that is in front of them - as long as they are hungry.

I have caught some cracker jewies on 3" Shrimp and 3" Minnows - one of my biggest jewies went 16kg cleaned and was on a 3" minnow up at Roseville.

However, in saying this, I have had more success with 5" plastics and BIG shads.

I rekon, that its fishing and there are no rules. Whilst some plastics may outfish others for species, there is no rule saying that one species wont eat a different type of plastic.

Good luck and look forward to the report of that big jewie!!

  8. Hey raiders,

with summer approaching (kings) and a new yak im in need of a few more squidding spots in middle harbour. You have Balmoral and the spit but if i'm launching at roseville it'll be a bit of a slog to get out there. Anyone got any spots west of the spit, preferably not too much further than Sugarloaf. Doesn't have to be specific but general location would be great.

    Cheers, Tom

Bantry Bay has them sometimes. If you can get to the Spit or Sailors bay the night before, you will have some fresh baits for then.

  9. Hi Guys,

I have made the rookie mistake of putting too much oil into my Four Stroke 30hp Yamaha.

Is there anyway to drain the oil? What is the easiest way to drain it out...?

If I run the engine with too much oil what damage can it do? (just for interests sake).

    Thanks

  10. Does anyone know if it's open again ? I believe it's taking longer to complete the works than what they said .

    cheers

    Hi Buddy,

The sign says it will be open on the 29th.... Could be longer though..

  11. Thanks for all the help guys!

I will have a play around with it this arvo/this weekend and report back here.

    Please keep the suggestions coming.

I am fairly sure it is fuel starvation - just have to find where the problem is now.

  12. Hey Guys,

Just bought a little tinny for the kids. The 3m tinny came with a 4 stroke Yamaha 25hp with only 80hours on it.

Took the kids out today for the third time using the boat and after getting 300m from the boat ramp, the engine cut out....

It still turns over. I can get it to start every 5minutes and run it in Idle for about 2minutes before it starts cutting out again...

I check oil, replaced the fuel - everything has been checked

    Can any recommend any suggestions?

  13. Hi Guys,

Over the weekend my Saltiga 2010 went for a swim and I was just wondering what is the best thing to do.

I sprayed the reel with Saltaway as soon as I got home, Should this be enough as the technology says its mag sealed?

    Look forward to your responses.

    Cheers

    Hey Matey,

The general go with dunked reels is firsty, dont wind anything! Even, if you still have line out, wrap it back on via hand.

As soon as you get home, spray with Inox or saltaway. I would strongly recommend popping into your local tackle store and sending it off for a service.

For $40 it might be worth getting the Daiwa guys to have a proper look at it, than cost you lots of $$ in bearings and parts later down the track.

  14. I was just looking at 4 x 50kg Bluefin on the Sydney GFC facebbok page caught wide of Broken Bay yesterday.

    Hey mate,

The boat was a new BBGFC trailorboat, "All Business" They caught 5 bluefin to 50kg roughly straight out the front of BB on Saturday.

  15. Yup - drove past on my way home from work last night.

Looks like the rain has stopped them from working...

I am enjoying the peace and quiet outside the house though!

LMAO....rain???....love your optimism. And if you live that close to the ramp, can I move in??...

Hahaaha! Trust me mate, when you have little speed boats with 2 strokes reving up and down the front of your house every morning at 7am - its not nice!!
